MSF Big Ten Picks: Week 8 Recap

This had all the makings for an exciting week in conference play, yet I was left unsatisfied with the outcome of several of the games.

big-ten-10-picks-logoLet’s forget about Purdue’s major collapse in the last 59 seconds of the game against the Buckeyes…how about Penn State blowing out Iowa? Indiana had a huge opportunity and let it fall through against Navy. Michigan and Michigan State both should have had better offensive production in the in-state rivalry. Minnesota didn’t put up a fight against the Badgers in the battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

Really, the only two exciting games were the Ohio State vs. Purdue (though not for me) and the Nebraska vs. Northwestern game. Let’s face it, UM vs. MSU was interesting, but a pretty boring contest. Same goes for IU.

So, even though there were some tight contests, I didn’t think week eight played out as well as I believed it would.

However, I am happy that I was able to gain another point on KVB and am creeping my way into contention.

Here are the week 8 results:

Purdue vs. Ohio State

  • Dustin’s Pick – Ohio State 46-17
  • Kevin’s Pick – Ohio State 45-13
  • Final Score – Ohio State 29-22 (OT)

What a fantastic week for the La Quinta College Football Road Trip, and I can’t wait to read about Jerod and Kevin’s experience this last weekend. Unfortunately for me, Purdue fell apart yet again and couldn’t get the big upset in the Horseshoe. Kevin, however, I’m sure had a minor heart attack throughout this entire game.

Minnesota vs. Wisconsin

  • Dustin’s Pick – Wisconsin 36-6
  • Kevin’s Pick – Minnesota 30-28
  • Final Score – Wisconsin 38-13

The Badgers had very little trouble with the Gophers this past weekend. Kevin took a shot at a huge upset, but Minnesota had no chance once the game started. The Badgers are on their way to a second consecutive Big Ten Championship game appearance.

Nebraska vs. Northwestern

  • Dustin’s Pick – Nebraska 31-28
  • Kevin’s Pick – Nebraska 45-35
  • Final Score – Nebraska 29-28

I was a missed two-point conversion away from scoring two points off of this game. Another nail-biter for the Wildcats, but Northwestern was on the wrong end of things this week. No matter how good Northwestern is, it just isn’t enough to get over the hump.

By the way, did everyone see the “Sea of Red” in Ryan Field on Saturday? Kudos to the traveling Cornhusker fans, but Northwestern supporters should be ashamed. Pat Fitzgerald’s team deserves more recognition than that.

Michigan State vs. Michigan

  • Dustin’s Pick – Michigan 24-10
  • Kevin’s Pick – Michigan 31-14
  • Final Score – Michigan 12-10

The woes continue for Michigan State, as they accompany Purdue as one of the most disappointing teams in college football this year. Michigan didn’t even score a touchdown in this game and found a way to win. I’m sure Brady Hoke isn’t happy with the way his team performed at home, but a win is a win and the Wolverines stay alive in the chase for the Legends Division title.

Indiana vs. Navy

  • Dustin’s Pick – Indiana 38-27
  • Kevin’s Pick – Indiana 35-24
  • Final Score – Navy 31-30

What a huge letdown for Kevin Wilson and the Hoosiers. Even though they had lost the last two games, they were competitive against Michigan State and Ohio State. This looked like a game that could help Indiana get on track and carry some momentum into the rest of the conference schedule. I guess the Midshipmen were too much to handle.

Penn State vs. Iowa

  • Dustin’s Pick – Iowa 19-14
  • Kevin’s Pick – Iowa 20-17
  • Final Score – Penn State 38-14

Penn State has been playing really good football lately, but even at that, the Hawkeyes should have had a better showing in this big time game, especially at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa has to be the most bi-polar team in the conference this year, as the Hawkeyes are either hit or miss.
