Fantasy Football Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups

Rashad Jennings, RB, JAX (Yahoo! 25%, FOX 15.2%)

With Maurice Jones-Drew looking like he may miss Week 8, you need to pick up Jennings if he is available.

Without MJD, Jennings becomes a three down back. He has decent running ability, albeit not the ideal option for Jacksonville. But sprinkle in an unimpressive Raiders defense, and this is an attractive match-up.

Jennings will get a ton of touches should MJD be out. Jennings will decide games this weekend.

LaRod Stephens-Howling, RB, ARI (Yahoo! 17%, FOX 5.7%)

I recommend you pick up Stephens-Howling as a contingency should you miss out on Jennings. Following his impressive 20+ point performance last weekend, it looks as though Stephens-Howling will get the majority of action going forward.

Stephens-Howling is your feast or famine type of RB. Yes, he did just run for over 100 yards and 20 points, but he’ll have his share of stinkers for you. Pick him up and play the match-up (not this week vs. San Francisco).

He should be owned in all but the shallowest of formats.

Josh Gordon, WR, CLE (Yahoo! 49%, FOX 21.7)

I’ve mentioned Gordon before. I wish you took my advice then. Gordon has only had 4 TDs in 3 games and has been a lock for double digit points.

Brandon Weeden has looked a lot better in recent weeks. Greg Little has not looked reliable. Basically, Gordon is the only game in town. He’s a very valuable WR and FLEX play.

Brandon Weeden, QB, CLE (Yahoo! 16%, FOX 6.6)

Yes, that’s TWO Cleveland Browns in the article this week.

This selection is conditional. If Josh Freeman or Christian Ponder are still available, grab them first. Chances are though, they aren’t. Weeden is likely the best option you have left. You could do a lot worse.

Dustin Keller, TE, NYJ (Yahoo! 27%, FOX 19.6%)

Was Fred Davis really your only TE? That seems like the only scenario I can think of why you don’t have at least one TE better than Keller. That being said, he might be the best option available.

Keller looked good last weekend dropping 15 fantasy points on the Patriots. However, I don’t have a lot of faith in Keller going forward. He’ll certainly get his touches, but he plays for the Jets. He will have fewer opportunities than other TEs are afforded.

If you’re stuck, you’re stuck. I still don’t love this move.

*****

As far as a defense, none of the widely available defenses really held an edge in my view. After this matchup with New Orleans, I do like the 20% owned Broncos defense. If you’re planning ahead, Weeks 14-16 are against Oakland, Baltimore and Cleveland.

Leave your comments below, I’ll be answering them at 6pm tomorrow evening.

Until then, keep sweet.

  1. What a fantasy week from hell! I made what I thought was a great trade in MJD for Michael Turner… I get to watch him use Michael Turner from here on out and I am looking for a RB. Never even got a single point out of the deal. I put in to get Jennings off waivers, but who knows if I will. Now I might have to trade Cruz to get a RB and lesser WR. Does Cruz LeShoure For Vjax RunDMC trade sound reasonable? I am also working a possible Cruz, Lloyd, LeShoure for Megatron, Jordy Nelson, McGahee trade. Any opinions?

    • I would keep Cruz and LeShoure… DMC isn’t having a great season with Oakland’s zone blocking. That second trade you mention sounds like a good deal

  2. Need advice as I need to start putting up some wins, I am 2-5 (i think the season is over for me):
    QB: Eli (Bench: Flaco)
WR: Miles, Welker, Demaryious, Brandon Gibson or Britt
RB: Rice (bye), Felix ………….(Bench: Mendenhall, Murray)
    TE: Rudolf (Bench: Gates)
    Def: 49ers
    no flex option.

    1) WR: Do i keep miles & gibson or are there better options available?
    2) Felix/Murray and Mendenhall all banged up, should I drop them for Blount, Leshoure, Powell, Alex Green?
Dallas’s offensive line is very up and down so not really sure of any of their players

    Thanks.

  3. In that first deal I forgot to add that I was going to ask for James Jones as well as DMC and VJax. I have Rogers as a QB so Jones fantasy value is high for me. So no faith in DMC at all? I also thought about offering Cruz for Fitzgerald and sproles. I am in serious RB trouble. I would ride it out with LeShoure but Detroit wont run the damn ball and it is starting to hurt a bit. MJD was just what I needed to make a run in my league which is crazy competitve total points league.

  4. I was surprised to see the same picks here as in our article (among others) – it’s really an indication that these are strong players that have a chance of being fantasy relevant for the rest of the year. I think Titus Young is an important addition to the list, though, as Burleson getting injured last night will have implications that some owners can turn positive.

Feel free to compare notes from our article: http://www.drinkfive.com/waiver-wire/385-week-8-waiver-wire-pickups and good luck to all of us in our quest to make the playoffs!

  5. eViL-Porcupine says:

I just traded Ponder to get Vick from a frustrated owner. Will I soon be frustrated as well?!!! My other QB is Cam Newton so you know where I am emotionally with this position =(

Who should I start this week and how do you think I will fair for the rest of the year? Will I be okay playing the matchups between the two or should I look to trade one of them?

Is Stafford someone who I could buy low on? I’ve already been approached by the owner.

  6. I have Rodgers and RG3 (late round flier hoping for trade value). I am in a keeper league and I am need RB help. Is Alfred Morris and an early rounder next year too much to ask for RG3?
