British Rugby League Player Paul Wood Ruptures Testicle, Continues Playing, Has Testicle Removed After Game

Rugby league, which has all the physicality of football or rugby union but without all the stoppages in play, is one of the world’s most grueling sports.

As with any form of full-contact football, rugby league players, out of a love for their craft, put their bodies at risk of life-altering injury.

Paul Wood of the Warrington Wolves of England’s Super League*, for example, gave up a gonad for the cause of winning a title in Europe’s top rugby league league.

Early in the second half of yesterday’s Grand Final match between the Wolves and the Leeds Rhinos, Wood took a knee to the groin, resulting in a ruptured testicle.

But, this being the championship game, Wood made no mention of his injury and kept playing. Even in post-game interviews, he said nothing about one of his sexual organs being irreparably damaged.

Following the match and his media responsibilities, Wood drove to the hospital and had his right testicle removed.

Wood (who already has two children, in case you were wondering) later explained on Twitter what had happened:

Unfortunately for Wood (who celebrates his 31st birthday on Wednesday), Warrington lost 26-18 to Leeds in the Grand Final.

* The Super League also has one team in France.

  1. Rugby is the most brutal sport on the planet, playing offense AND defense for 80 minutes, only ten subs allowed in a game, I love it. Australian football is right up there as well.

NFL players with huddles/substitutions can’t hold a candle to them.

  2. I’d just like to take this opportunity to mention some Midwestern Rugby League teams –
    Iowa City Crash
    Western Storm (Elgin)
    Chicago Stockyarders
