Thursday Night Football: Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers Preview and Prediction

Football on Thursday nights will be a regular occurrence this season, with this week’s matchup featuring a classic rivalry.

The Bears will travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers, who dropped their opener to the 49ers. The Bears had a slightly easier game as they beat Andrew Luck’s Colts in his rookie debut.

Chicago Bears

The Bears won their season opener 41-21 over the Colts last Sunday. Andrew Luck was intercepted three times by Chicago’s defense, two of which were recorded by Tim Jennings.

The offense played a great game with Jay Cutler throwing for two touchdowns, while Michael Bush and Matt Forte combined for three. Brandon Marshall got in on the scoring as he caught a pass from Cutler in their reunion.

Chicago’s defense rattled Andrew Luck early, forcing the three interceptions while sacking him three times as well. The competition will be significantly harder this week against arguably the best quarterback in the league in Aaron Rodgers.

The Bears lost both games against the Packers last season, but that was during a stellar 15-1 regular season for Green Bay that will likely not be repeated for many years. If Cutler can limit his interceptions to one or none, Chicago will be just fine against Green Bay’s less-than-average defense.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay dropped their opener, but it was against one of the top teams in the NFL. San Francisco will be a contender for the NFC title this season, so an eight point loss is nothing for Packers fans to be too worried about.

The lack of production in the running game, however, is something to be worried about and it hurt Green Bay in their opener. Cedric Benson only had eighteen yards on nine carries, while Rodgers added 27 yards on five carries.

The Packers are known for the passing game, but when Rodgers only accounts for 303 yards on 44 total attempts, it is tough to compete against a defensive-powerhouse such as San Francisco.

Green Bay has already matched its loss total from all of last season, but they will surely be fine as the season progresses. It is unfair to hold them to the standards that they were held to throughout last season. They still have the talent from last year’s team that got them to the record of 15-1, but their defense remains a major question.

Bears-Packers Prediction

The Packers are usually the favorite in this series now, due to the recent past and their always-high expectations, but look for the Bears to turn things around this season.
