Berets and Blazers: Ralph Lauren Unveils U.S. Olympic Team Opening Ceremony Uniforms

Ralph Lauren yesterday revealed the uniforms that American athletes and coaches will wear for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

Here they are:

From left to right: swimmer Ryan Lochte, decathlete Brian Clay, rower Giuseppe Lanzone, and soccer player Heather Mitts

You may find the berets, the naval motif, and the enormous Polo Ralph Lauren logo off-putting, but this year’s duds aren’t much of a departure from the Opening Ceremony uniforms that the U.S. delegation wore four years ago in Beijing:

The women wore pants instead of skirts. Other than that, same basic idea.

And here is LeBron straightening Kobe’s tie back in 2008:

Dwight Howard straightens no one’s tie. (I found this at The Preppy Princess—thepreppyprincess.wordpress.com)

In case you were wondering, this is what the U.S. wore two years ago at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver:

Those are some tight pants.

Ralph Lauren put together a more casual look for this year’s Closing Ceremony:

Regardless of what you think of Ralph Lauren’s uniforms, pity any company that has to design outfits for an Olympic Opening Ceremony. Australia in 1992 set the bar for Opening Ceremony fashion impossibly high:
