I just stumbled upon this video at Reddit, and I sure am glad I did. I had no idea this sport existed.
The sport is called “beep baseball,” and it is designed to give visually impaired people a fun, competitive outlet.
As explained in the video below, which shows the 2011 Beep Baseball World Series in Indianapolis, the sport is like softball but with some specific, downright brilliant customizations that allow people who cannot see to navigate the batter’s box, basepaths, and outfield.
The most interesting customization of the rules is putting the pitcher and batter on the same team. But when you think about it, it’s a necessity. As Dan Greene, the president of Beep Baseball, explains in the beginning of the video, it would be “pretty easy to strike a blind guy out.”
