Forget the Heat, Celtics are the Real Story

Take a trip back to February 22nd.

The Boston Celtics had a record of 15-17, were almost out of the playoff picture, and were on a five game losing streak.

Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett all were being tagged with the “washed up” label, and the story around this team was whether or not it was time to move forward and start a new era of C’s basketball at the trade deadline by breaking up Boston’s Big Three.

That same team that everyone wrote off, everyone assumed was done, and everyone thought was going to be broken up by the time the trade deadline passed is now one game from advancing to the NBA Finals.

Oh, and they are about to beat the big, bad Miami Heat too.

Of course, those Heat are the ones garnering most of the headlines.

Your morning commute probably consisted of listening to sports talks shows discuss whether it is time to break up LeBron, Wade, and Bosh; and talks with your co-workers most likely included a few LeBron James jokes.

Here’s a memo to everyone: let’s not lose sight of what is happening here.

The Boston Celtics should be the bigger story right now, not the Miami Heat.

Sure, it is a big deal that the Heat are on the brink of elimination, and the “not five, not six, not seven” words LeBron uttered about championships now may refer to the number of games his team gets eliminated in.

Meanwhile, this Celtics team is the total opposite story of the Miami Heat. The Heat were crowned champions of the East as soon as Derrick Rose took his fateful hop, skip, and a jump with a minute left against the Sixers and are now failing. The Celtics were deemed as done and are now thriving.

So, what’s the reasoning as to why the Heat are getting all the headlines this morning? Are we all afraid to admit we were wrong, and LeBron’s failures provide everyone with a nice topic to deflect the attention with?

I’m not saying that everyone was wrong for writing off the Celtics. Heck, I did the same, and was probably the first one to do so. After all, the Sixers took them to seven games just two weeks ago. Still, everyone wants to discuss the Heat’s failures instead of Boston’s triumphs.

The series is not over yet, and it is very possible that Miami wins two straight and does indeed represent the East in the Finals. Regardless, this Celtics team playing the Heat this well is a remarkable story, and that’s what should be getting everyone’s attention.
