Champions League Groups Announced: 5 MLS Teams Earn 2 Additional Home Games

What’s the best gift for fans of a team? How about more chances to see them play.

In CONCACAF Champions League, these games don’t come against American opponents. One more interesting reason for fans to appreciate the efforts from a year ago.

All the berths for MLS teams were decided by last year’s results: a Canadian tournament winner, a U.S. Open tournament winner, the MLS regular season best record and the two finalists from MLS Cup.

Group play has been determined for this year’s CCL. Teams from each country are purposely kept apart during group play.

Toronto FC, Real Salt Lake, the Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo will all play four more matches against teams from either Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.

There are a total of 24 teams competing. Each of the three teams of the eight groups will play the other two teams in their group home and away, for a total of four matches. The records will be compiled with goal scoring counting towards the records.

Winners of group play will advance to the quarter-finals for a home and away aggregate.

Each team is hopeful of winning the tournament to make a splash in the FIFA Club World Cup 2013.
