Beginning Baseball: A Season of Lessons From the Tumbling Twins

Welcome back to another season of Beginning Baseball!

Yes, I am aware the season started in April, and this ‘welcome back to baseball’ is overdue. I will explain my late start shortly.

For those of you reading the Beginning Baseball column for the first time, thanks for reading!

Take a peak at last year’s posts, my first season as a baseball fan, and join me as I continue to learn and grow more passionate for my team, the Minnesota Twins.

She's back!

Now back to my tardy post.

There’s no easy way to say this, so here we go: it was hard to watch a team I cheer for struggle.

Last year was a tough year to be a Twins fan. I never wavered or questioned my choice to root for this Minnesota ball team, and plenty of my fellow Packers fans, who are also Brewers fans, jumped at the opportunity to rub my “poor choice” to be a Twins fan in my face.

But I brushed it off. You can’t dominate every season.

To ignite my excitement for the 2012 season, I attended TwinsFest in January. It was a blast, and I was ready to see improvements!

Soon, Spring Training came. I watched, read, listened, but kept quiet. I was in a learning mode, absorbing as many details as I could. I was waiting for the first idea to pop in my head to begin brainstorming my first post of the season.

I waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

Pretty soon I was face-to-face with Opening Day and had nothing to write about. Then an idea came to me: wouldn’t it be great to start the column off talking about the vast improvements the Twins have made to give them a better start this year?

I knew they weren’t going to be sweeping teams each series, and I knew they still had holes to fill, but it looked as though Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau were going to give the Twins an added push to help them start the season off on a better note.

I am still waiting to write that post. However, baseball does not wait.

It is going to be another long season.

In case you were wondering, it is much easier to write about an undefeated team that is dominating the league than it is to write about a team with a record of 10-26 in mid-May.

That’s right. 10-26. May 15th, 2012. Bottom of the American League. Bottom of Major League Baseball.

I’ll just have to take it game by game. The truth is you can learn more from a losing team. Weaknesses explain why you need those particular areas to be strengths. This season, I am going to learn what makes a winning team.

I am also planning on attending as many baseball games as I can, both major and minor leagues. Last Monday, I joined AJ Kaufman for a relaxing evening of baseball with a small-town atmosphere in Clinton, IA.

This weekend, I will join MSF’s Drew Lange, Chris Callaway, Tyler Juranovich, and Kurt Crowley to watch the Twins take down the Brewers at Miller Park. At least that’s how I hope Saturday’s game turns out. If not, I will enjoy the excellent company, friendly banter, and phenomenal tailgating experience with some of sports’ best fans.

I am finally ready to take on the challenge the Twins have given me. Good or bad, the writing is coming.

Most importantly, I am ready to expand my knowledge and appreciation for the true American pastime: baseball.
