The Grizzlies earned the fourth seed in the West over the Clippers by one game to earn home court advantage in this series.
The Clippers came into the season as one of the most hyped teams in the league, but the Grizzlies are looking to get back to the second round, where they took the Thunder to seven games last season.
Grizzlies-Clippers Series Preview
The Memphis Grizzlies have been labeled as the team that no one wants to meet in the playoffs. They shocked the Spurs last year in the first round as the eighth seed and nearly made it to the Western Conference Finals. They come into this year’s playoffs even better than last year, and provide a tough matchup for the Clippers.
Rudy Gay leads the team in points (19) and has the clear advantage over Caron Butler at the small forward position. The returning Zach Randolph will be the biggest question for Memphis. He recently returned to the starting lineup in the season finale win over Orlando. He missed over half of the season due to a knee injury suffered at the beginning of the season.
Randolph will be matched up with Blake Griffin at the power forward position, which is a major responsibility. Keeping Griffin out of the paint is the only way to stop him, as he is a lackluster shooter from mid-range.
The Clippers were viewed by many as favorites to win the West at the beginning of the season. Getting past Memphis would prove that this prediction is valid.
The loss of Chauncey Billups may have done in the Clippers, but they still have Chris Paul at point guard. They also picked up Nick Young from Washington, who averages 14.2 points per game.
Blake Griffin will be the Clippers’ key to success in this series. He averaged just over 20 points per game in the regular season, and must continue to score at this rate in this series. A below average series from him would doom the Clippers, and result in Chris Paul having to do too much.
This series can go either way and will likely go to six or seven games.
