Peyton Manning has wasted no time looking for his new team.
He has already had meetings with both Denver and Arizona, and he is not done yet. Seattle, Kansas City, and Miami all want meetings with Peyton, but Miami is the only realistic option to actually get a meeting.
Peyton originally said that he wanted to remain in the AFC, but his interest in Arizona refutes that statement. Other teams including Washington, New York (Jets), and Tennessee also have interest, but they have seen their chances fade in the past few days. The Redskins answered by trading up to the second spot in the draft, while the Jets gave Mark Sanchez an unnecessarily large contract extension.
Denver would be a great fit for Peyton.
I originally thought that he could work with Tebow, who could assume more Wildcat responsibilities. Tebow held this role as a freshman at Florida, with Chris Leak at the main quarterback spot, but Tebow is surely looking for a starting role after leading his team to the playoffs.
If Peyton is signed and Tebow is traded, which looks like a strong possibility according to several reports, Peyton would be able to run his type of offense with no disruptions.
The first step for John Elway and the Broncos would be to bring in some quality receivers for Peyton. Demaryius Thomas could stay, but they would need much more talent at the position. Two easy choices would be Pierre Garcon and Reggie Wayne. Both are free agents, and Garcon has even said that he would like to follow Peyton.
Arizona has a better system set in place for Peyton, but they would first have to get rid of Kevin Kolb. They owe him a ton of money, including $7 million in a bonus this week, but they will need to know Peyton’s decision before deciding on Kolb.
Larry Fitzgerald is Arizona’s best reason for Peyton to join their team, but basic things like having an indoor stadium could also be used in their meeting.
The fact that Kurt Warner went into Arizona and took that team to the Super Bowl should also catch Peyton’s attention. Ken Whisenhunt would let Peyton run his style of offense, which is the only way Peyton would join any team, and he would thrive with a team that has the talent to go far in the playoffs.
Peyton is expected to make his decision early this week, possibly by Tuesday, and at this point Arizona looks like the favorite. However, I’m sure that John Elway had a great meeting with Peyton, as the last thing he wants is to have Tim Tebow as the quarterback in Denver for another season.
