NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard To Stay With Orlando Magic; New Jersey Nets, Portland Talking Gerald Wallace

Oh Dwight Howard, will you ever make up your mind?

After originally demanding a trade, Howard claimed he would stay with the Orlando Magic through next season. Then yesterday he went back on that saying he wouldn’t give up the opt-out clause in hi contract.

Well today, just hours before the NBA’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, Howard has reversed course again, claiming he will not opt-out of his contract and will return to Orlando next season.

Got all of that?

Dwight Howard To Stay With Orlando Magic

The Magic have now reversed course and instead of feverishly trying to trade the six-time All-Star they have shut down the red phone that accepts all Howard trade requests (note: I don’t really know if they have a red phone or not, I’m just assuming).

Howard plans to sign a waiver of the early termination option in his contract at some point Thursday, but until he and his agent actually sign the waiver, the Magic have no guarantee that he will. (Update: Howard has waived his early termination option).

One sign that Howard is probably staying is the fact that the New Jersey Nets have been told he will, in fact, be returning to the Magic. ESPN’s Ric Bucher reported that New Jersey has been informed of the situation and is reacting accordingly.

Yahoo! Adrian Wojnarowski says the Nets are now working the phones around the NBA in an attempt to land some talent that could convince point guard Deron Williams to return next season. They are currently engaged in talks with the Portland Trailblazers that could net them Gerald Wallace in exchange for Mehmet Okur, Shawne Williams and a protected first-round pick.

Howard’s decision to stay in Orlando could shake the foundation of the entire trade market.
