Fab Melo Ineligible: Syracuse Center Will Miss NCAA Tournament With ‘Eligibility Issue’

Breaking news in the world of college basketball as my Twitter feed just exploded with folks saying that Syracuse center Fab Melo will miss the NCAA Tournament because he is academically ineligible.

Fab Melo Ineligible for Syracuse

Indeed, the chatter is confirmed by the official website of Syracuse sports (hat tip @DanLevyThinks):

Via SUAthletics.com:

Syracuse University sophomore men’s basketball center Fab Melo did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh, and will not take part in the NCAA Tournament due to an eligibility issue. Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, no further details can be provided at this time.

This is obviously a huge blow to #1-seeded Syracuse, which looked invincible early in the season with an improved Melo. They struggled some when he had to miss some time even though they kept on winning, as evidenced by a final record that showed just two blemishes all year.

Our own Andy Bottoms just tweeted this:

For those who did not watch Cuse play w/o Fab Melo, you may want to go and change some things about your bracket. And by “may,” I mean will.

With everyone sure to doubt Syracuse now, will this be the kind of development that Jim Boeheim can get his players to rally around, playing the “no one gives us a chance” card, en route to a deep tourney run? We’ll see.

How far do you think Syracuse can go with no Melo? Comment below.
