Brad Stevens Says No To Illinois, Staying At Butler

In case you haven’t been paying attention over the past few years, Butler head basketball coach Brad Stevens really likes his job. No, I mean he really likes his job.

For the third-straight offseason, Stevens has been pursued for a major conference job opening (or multiple major conference openings) and has refused to leave the small school he has helped raise to basketball relevance.

Brad Stevens Turns Down Illinois

After going hard at VCU coach Shaka Smart and being rebuffed, Illinois reportedly turned its attention to Stevens. That interest was apparently a one-way street and the 35-year-old has announced that he will remain at Butler.

Much like Smart, Stevens is just happy in his current position. He is making good money, and he is coaching in his home state for a school that appreciates him and what he has done for it.

I have talked to several sources close to Stevens and at this time there are only two schools he would leave Butler for. I won’t say which ones, but if you know anything about Stevens they should be pretty obvious. Unfortunately, neither of those jobs will be open any time soon. So expect him to stay at Butler for the foreseeable future.

Stevens isn’t a guy who cares about money. He’s comfortable where he is and, frankly, is making enough to where he’s not struggling. He just wrapped up his fifth season at Butler and has a career record of 139-40.

Like Smart, it will take a perfect situation to make Stevens leave his current job. Illinois is not that perfect situation.
