Friend of the site Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Major League Baseball is, in fact, going to expand the playoffs; and it’s going to happen this year.
The agreement on the additional wild cards is not yet final, and one source said there are “still a few loose ends” to resolve. But an announcement could occur as soon as Thursday, sources said.
It looks like the wild cards would meet up in a 1-game “knockout” playoff.
I haven’t come to a final decision on how I feel about this. I’ve always enjoyed how hard it is to make the baseball postseason, and this obviously makes it a touch easier, but still harder than in football or basketball. It also brings with it the likelihood of more teams staying in races longer in September, which could be good for everyone.
I do know this: with the White Sox expected to struggle this year, any additional playoff spots is met immediately with this personal reaction:
