New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers 5 P’s: Preview, Point Spread, Pick, Prediction, and Poll

In this afternoon’s second conference championship game, the red hot New York Giants travel to San Francisco to take on the consistent, physical 49ers.

The Giants had to execute another December surge just to make the playoffs, but they did just that and have been flying high ever seen. New York spanked Atlanta and then vanquished the 15-1 Packers in Green Bay. They also appear on a collision course with the Patriots, which would be a rematch of the classic Super Bowl from a few years ago.

San Francisco, however, has other ideas. The 49ers went 13-3 this season and beat the Giants in Candlestick when the two teams met up earlier this season. After their thrilling win over New Orlenas, confidence will not be a problem for Jim Harbaugh’s team.

Here is all the basic info you need to know, what MSF’s writers have said about the game this week, and a poll so you can take your pick.

When these two teams met in Week 10 the Giants’ defense played a solid game. The final score was 27-20 in the 49ers’ favor, but the Giants offense actually outgained the 49ers by 90 yards. The defense forced four field goals, but two interceptions by Eli proved to be the difference.

the 49ers must be prepared for a pass-heavy attack from the Giants. Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks always seem to find ways to get open, which means the secondary for San Francisco must make sure that there are no blown assignments. Any mistake will likely result in a touchdown for the Giants.

The 49ers have caught the attention of football fans across the country, but I just can’t pick against the Giants right now. Eli Manning will find a way to get a win, and the defense for New York is just too tough.

I picked the Patriots to win the AFC, so I am looking forward to the Super Bowl rematch between the Giants and the Pats’.

Jerod’s Giants-49ers Spread Pick

My heart says San Francisco, and there was a certain “Team of Destiny” feeling to that improbable win over the Saints, but it is very hard to pick against the Giants seeing how they’ve played over the last month and remembering what they did back in January and February of 2008.

With so many key components of that improbable run back for this one – most notably the coach and QB and the dominant defensive line – the Giants have a Super Bowl look about them. Plus, New York almost beat San Francisco at Candlestick earlier this year. While San Fran has continued to play at a high level, the Giants now seem appreciably better, which could help bridge the gap that kept New York from winning last time.

I hope I’m wrong; I hope Jim Harbaugh, Alex Smith and Co have enough magic to continue this amazing and unexpected ride, but the Giants have been here before and have an elite QB who has become easy to trust. I’d take New York if it was a pick ‘em, so give me the points.

  1. This one should be closer than the Patriots game, but San francisco is happy just to get a win last week against a rather lame defense. New Yorks defense has been playing much better and will blanket Vernon Davis. That leaves Michael Crabtree, really? Nicks, Cruz and Manningham with Manning at the helm should win this one, 27-17

  2. Mathaniel Avery says:

49ers have solid defense and few injuries. I think is going to be close. Manning is one of those quarter backs that finds opportunity and makes great plays, but coming off illness this will be something to see if he will be in great form. The reason I think the 49ers will win is they are hungry and they have a need to prove themselves. Alex Smith is one for a long time people have thought he was a dud but now I think he has the drive and feel of the offense to pull out the win. Go Niners!
