Giants-49ers NFC Championship Game Matchup Features Tale of Two #1’s: Eli Manning and Alex Smith

The 15-1 Green Bay Packers (who peaked in September-November)  have indeed been exited from the NFL Playoffs by the New York Giants (who are peaking now), and Hakeem Nicks was indeed wide open on an end-of-half Hail Mary.

So much for the Green Bay dynasty; as former GM Ron Wolf would say, the 2011 Packers proved to be just a fart in the wind.

Deal with it.

The silver lining is that I personally do not have to deal with torn allegiances next weekend. You see, I jumped on the San Francisco 49ers bandwagon during the Bill Walsh/Joe Montana era – yes, people tend to jump on bandwagons of franchises that get good. During the 1990’s/early 2000’s I watched with mixed emotions as the Packers/49ers met four times in the NFC playoffs, with the Niners only win coming in the 1998 Wild Card Game now also known as ‘The Catch II’ and also ‘Jerry Rice Fumbled’.

I was hoping that the Packers and Niners would renew their playoff history at Lambeau Field this Sunday night, but that is not the case. Instead, the venerable post-season version of Candlestick Park, dressed up with painted end zones and number markers outlined in red, makes an encore appearance following the Instant Classic win Saturday over the New Orleans Saints.

It has been too long since the Giants and 49ers last met in another memorable playoff encounter following the 2002 season.

The NFC Championship also features Eli Manning and Alex Smith, the number one overall picks of the 2004 and 2005 NFL Draft. Both QB’s have taken separate and somewhat bumpy roads to get to this game.

It is amazing to think that Eli actually just celebrated his 31st birthday, as his career still seems to be on an upswing. He also is just two wins away from collecting a second Super Bowl trophy and one-upping his older, more-publicized brother.

To be honest, I have not been totally on the Eli Manning train based on the events leading up to the 2004 NFL Draft. As many remember, that was the draft of Eli, Philip Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger, and all three have all gone on to enormous success in the league.

elichargersEli was projected to be the #1 overall pick by the San Diego Chargers until Eli (backed by Archie/Peyton) announced that he would not play for San Diego if selected. That led to an awkward scene where Eli was selected by the Chargers and posed with a Chargers jersey on the podium before being dealt to the New York Giants for Philip Rivers (and two draft picks) less than an hour later.

As a Chargers fan, I lost some respect for the Manning family during this process. Truth is, there were legitimate reasons for the Manning camp to go in that direction that are now validated. First, there is the Chargers front office, which was a mess then and is a mess now. Also, the Mannings weren’t nuts about potentially being both be in the same conference, where they would had faced each other more often and possibly in the playoffs.

Rivers has done well in his career, though to little fault of his own he has been unable to collect the Super Bowl hardware that Eli owns. By ending up in New York, Eli Manning put himself under much more scrutiny than he ever would have in the 6-1-9 area code – no doubt Eli threw himself into the fire of the New York fan base and media.

Eli was not the instant success his brother was in Indianapolis. In his rookie year Eli completed less than 50 percent of his passes. Eli did not have a QB rating over 80 or a completion percentage over 60 until the 2008 season, one year after leading the Giants to their Super Bowl 42 victory. 2011 has become the year where Eli has become Elite, passing for 4,933 yards – normally a mammoth total except in a year when Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Matthew Stafford all went over the 5,000 yard mark and Aaron Rodgers recorded a record QB rating of 122.5.

Safe to say Eli continues to trend upward while another New York-based QB continues to regress (my lips are sealed but his name is Mark Sanchez). And I have to admit to being wrong in holding Eli’s strategic maneuvering away from the Chargers in ’04 against him. In fact I admire the way Eli has rolled his own way and has taken a different path to stardom than his brother. The Giants are traditionally much more of a balanced offense than Peyton Manning’s Colts. It has taken time for Eli to be given the offensive weapons (Hakeem Nicks/Victor Cruz). In time the Giants became as feared offensively through the air as on the ground.

And now Eli owns two playoff wins in Lambeau Field, and this one cannot be blamed on Brett Favre.

Long before Tim Tebow, Alex Smith was the master of running Urban Meyer’s offense in leading the University of Utah to an undefeated season in 2004, throwing 32 TD’s versus just four interceptions. Along with Aaron Rodgers, Smith was considered the best QB prospect in the 2005 draft. Alex eventually emerged as the safer pick as the #1 overall selection over the player who was just across the Bay at Cal-Berkeley. Rodgers was thought of as an unfinished prospect who may not develop more. In fact, Rodgers was just a few years removed from not being recruited AT ALL out of high school. Meanwhile Smith excelled in the pre-draft process with above-average speed (4.7) and scored 40 on the Wonderlic exam.

alexsmithdraftAlex Smith ultimately became the first pick of the ’05 Draft while Aaron Rodgers’ stock slipped to the point where the debate became whether he or Jason Campbell should be the second QB selected. Rodgers fell all the way to the Packers 25th overall pick while Campbell was selected by the Washington Redskins at #26.

Until this season, Smith was linked more with infamous draft failures such as JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf. In his third season (2007), Alex’s completion percentage regressed below the 50 percent level. Eventually Smith wound up battling Shaun Hill (2008-09) and Troy Smith (2010) for the starting job and was no longer being looked at as the Niners’ long-term answer.

It was not until Jim Harbaugh’s arrival this year when Smith finally found his comfort zone and the franchise in general turned its fortunes around with a 13-3 season and first playoff appearance in nine years. Still, Alex could not escape the comparisons to Aaron Rodgers and his MVP/record-breaking season in Green Bay.  Alex finished ninth this year in QB rating, above such names as Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers. However Smith finished with much less gaudy volume numbers, throwing only 445 times (to Eli Manning’s 589, for comparison).

Vindication came in the divisional playoff game versus New Orleans. Much of the game was not pretty, and Michael Crabtree dropping several passes didn’t help. But all that will be remembered from that game now is the final three minutes in the dwindling twilight at Candlestick, about the same time of day where Montana to Dwight Clark  struck three decades ago.

First came Alex’s bootleg to put San Fran up 29-28, and then the winning TD strike to Vernon Davis with :09 left, eerily similar to Steve Young to Terrell Owens to the same end zone 13 years earlier.

Ultimately, Alex Smith had proven himself clutch in a high-stress situation much like Joe Montana and Young had done a generation earlier.

So Alex Smith finally gets one over Aaron Rodgers; he will be playing this weekend – while Aaron will have to live on in endless State Farm spots.

But a fellow member of the #1 overall fraternity will be waiting on the opposing sideline this weekend.

And one will get to Super Bowl 46, but only one…

  261. Today’s Must See Monday really was a “must see!” Eric Newton,Senior adviser to the president of the John S and James L. Knight Foundation, really brought to attention the fact that media is ALWAYS changing. He referred to the current young generation as digital natives. We do not know a world without daily newspapers, though there was a day. Still today, communication is exponentially on the rise! The predictions that Newton made about the future were so incredibly interesting. First he made the prediction that starting around 2027, intelligent media would be the form of media on the rise; meaning nearly everyone would have “smart” devices with them at all times. Newton presumes that the Bio Media will be prevailing from 2048 to 2068 and people will begin to have media implants and will be able to communicate with others at all times. Following Bio Media is Hyper Media, and finally Enlightened media up until 2110. By then he believes that people will be able to communicate with the environment and have all of their surroundings respond as well. The whole time that Newton was leading up to his predictions about the future he said “No, we’re not crazy yet…” but now that he covered his ideas, things have certainly gone “crazy!” I think that it’s so interesting he has such specific ideas about what is going to take place in the future and when. As he concluded, there will always be a need for journalists. The true key is being engaged in the technology in order to move forward and provide truthful information to the people.

  262. Eric Knewton is a Senior Adviser to the president of the John S and James L. Knight Foundation. He explains that no one can tell the turn out of the digital age, science fiction equals big influence, each American generation come of age as a different news medium is rising, and people in the 20’s play a key role. We predict the future based on what we know. Eric tells us that every 80 years a crisis and a great awakening known as the light bulb, telephone, and film. He explains that the future is going to play a big role in the media. Also how there is going to be a World War 4.0 humans against non-humans. He is basically predicting the future of technology and what our world is going to become. For example, in the years 2027-2047 intelligence medias generation: visionary, cloud smart grids, robotics, and artificial intelligence. So all media will be smart, news bots, and universal data. Technology is taking over more and more every day.

  263. This week’s Must See Monday,”A History of the Future of News: What 1767 Tells Us About 2110,” featuring Eric Newton who discussed his theory on the changing world of media. He detailed how the media changes form one generation to the next; from the Compromise generation to the Cyber generation. Also, his lecture focused on the fascinating predictions people made and the actual changes that occurred. It is amazing how so many people stayed inside the comfort zone of logical reason and would not dare step out into the unknown. The future is right around the corner and is coming closer as time ticks. Newton says the future is for those who “Think crazy!” The science fiction visionaries who are not afraid to take risks and be laughed at by the inside the box thinkers. His lecture was inspiring because it gave permission to be creative and have non traditional ideas. The world of media is changing quicker than it ever has before and in order to stay current one has to constantly be on the edge and try new things. This is where it leads into one of his great topics of the night, an educational “Next Big Thing” think tank! I think that is an excellent idea and should be implemented at the Cronkite School. How amazing would it be to have the best journalism students in the country spearhead an idea and network it across the country and the world. It will give students a new sense of ability and entrepreneurship. Eric Newton was a fascinating speaker and I look forward witnessing and being a part of the next generation of the media.

  264. “New Tools Make New Rules” Eric Newton’s discussion on the future and past of media sheds light on a pattern of social media development that can be overlooked by most. He started by focusing on the very start of news itself, back to when the grunts and pointing of cavemen are all we can assume were ways of alerting other. Newton then works his way through each media advancement since then, until present, and then on through the future. Shown on a table in increments of 20 years, he demonstrates the steady growth of societies technological advance and the shocking repetition of events that have occurred multiple times throughout history. It is with these past reoccurring events that he feels it is perfectly possible to predict the world’s betterment of media in years to come. The timeline table, displayed behind him not only shows our telecommunication improvements, but also presents a somewhat fixed order of events. For it seems that it only takes a given amount of time after one occurrence that the same is bound to happen again, signifying roughly 80 years we experience a great awakening. But it doesn’t just take a table to foreshadow the advancements ahead of our time; it requires no more than watching the newest science fiction movie. But how can something so mainstream allow the majority of people the insight to the future? It is because, as explained by Newton, science fictionists are more accurately bridging history and predicting technological outbreaks. The inventor of the cell phone for example says he got the idea solely based on, at the time ridiculous, prop used in “Star Trek.” So what exactly is suspected to develop? Newton states, based on an emulating history, he feels the progress ahead will end all print media, perhaps another world war and even more portability and personal tech devices that will be capable of things more than imaginable. However, despite the obvious patterns, many people say that nothing advanced historically during their generation of growing up. Though sometimes it seems mediocre or expected of technology to be as advanced it is, think about what they thought was “advanced” 20 years ago.

  265. These two sure know how to enjoy a movie!

  266. Greetings! Very useful advice within this post! It’s the little changes that will make the most important changes. Thanks a lot for sharing!

  267. Nothing is more relaxing than eating chocalate!

  268. I never thought that I would see a connection between the media cycles and science-fiction. Science-fiction always seemed like an unreal reality. Eric Newton showed that science-fiction can become reality. In his presentation he showed that the “crazy” thinking of science-fiction mirrors the technology we have today. “The Jetsons” had Skype. “Star Trek” used cell phones. “2001: A Space Odyssey” had the iPad. “The Jetsons,” “Star Trek” and “2001: A Space Odyssey” were created in the 1960s which was decades before any of these technologies were created. The 1960s were a part of Generation X whose big media medium was TV newscast. The technologies during this era included satellite, cable and video tape. These technologies were not even close to what was being presented on TV and film. Not many people would think that technology of “Star Trek” or “The Jetsons” would become a reality about four decades later.Newton pointed out that we tend base what the future will be like from what we know. In the 1960s, the people only knew a limited amount of what technology could be. Eric Newton said to predict the future we must think “crazy.” There was someone who thought “crazy” and brought their ideas to reality. These ideas shaped how we use technology and how we get our news. Each generation has grown up with a different media medium. It will be interesting to see what technologies the next generations use as a medium or what science-fiction technology will be made into reality. After listening to his presentation, the possibilities of what the future could be seem endless.

  269. He’s just waiting patiently for the place to open up.

  270. Right here is the perfect blog for everyone who would like to find out about this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa). 274. Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon everyday. It’s always exciting to read through content from other writers and practice something from their websites.

  275. This forum is an arena for the university community to seek answers to these (any many more) vital questions. The fact that it is open to general public as well indicates the need for an unbiased, non-judgmental discussion of the issue rather than a-ranting from a single perspective.

  276. I had the pleasure of having Victor Merina speak in my ethics class prior to the Must See Monday presentation. He spoke about similar situations, but was more in depth. He passed around the actual story he had written the Bayou and talked a while about what it was like going to revisit the area. It was really emotional and eye-opening to here the stories he had to share. I was really excited to attend Monday’s event and I thought the topic would be of interest. I enjoyed every minute of the presentation. I didn’t so much appreciate Ina Jaffe. I felt that she was very negative and her comments seemed a bit nasty in my opinion. She seemed to be spending a lot of battling with Victor and it was obvious that her experiences were much different. Overall, I learned a lot of good insight on how to react to situations and how to deal with all of the emotions and personal feelings that go along with certain stories. I appreciated what Victor had to say about the language and various jargon that you should be aware of when you go to interview someone in a new place. It makes sense that people will be more willing to accept you and talk to you if you show respect and appreciation for them. It also benefits you more by allowing you to communicate affectively. People have different perspectives of media and that makes it important for you to explain the process to make them understand and more open to talk. There is usually a reason behind them not wanting to talk to you. They mentioned you needed to be aware and have strategies. I wouldn’t mind getting another opportunity to speak with Victor.

  277. I would like to consider the chance of saying thanks to you for the professional suggestions I have often enjoyed visiting your site. We’re looking forward to the commencement of my college research and the overall groundwork would never have been complete without coming to your web site. 279. This was a very exciting and promising Must See Monday, looking forward at what Journalism can and will soon be. Eric Newton gave a fascinating look at the potential of our industry. I’m a big tech fan, so the idea of having “NewsBots” delivering news and getting chips implanted is captivating. It’s a bit far-fetched, but, as Mr. Newton said, that’s what changes the world. “When thinking of the future, think crazy.” It’s thrilling to think that in the next couple years, my fellow freshmen and upperclassmen could be the minds behind unprecedented groundbreaking and innovative ideas that change the world. We’ve come such a long way in terms of progress, and most of the changes are recent. If you look back, the same medium of news delivery has been used over long periods of time, but now, it’s changing rapidly enough that new ideas are being created at unheard of rates. “Somewhere in the ocean of news is the truth, and I wish you all happy sailing.”

  280. Eric Newton-Must See MondayThe future of journalism is pretty exciting, but is also scary at the same time. Journalism has evolved so very much, especially in recent years. Generationally, we have seen massive news sharing changes over time from pamphlets to tweets. The future generations will even see bigger changes as the world evolves. His topic reached all of us as students looking for a career in journalism. A key thing to remember is we must understand the past of our field, to be leading journalist of tomorrow. There are tons of jobs out there for journalist but they just might not be traditional jobs working for a large news organization. One thing that has not changed is the principal journalism is that it’s our job to tell the truth. Overall I think this is one of the most informative must see Mondays we have had. The information really caught my attention and made me excited for my future career as a journalist. I can not to be a part of the ever changing field, we as leaders in the journalism world coming from Cronkite, will be equipped to cover the world in any medium.

  281. May I simply just say what a relief to uncover someone who really understands what they’re talking about on the internet. You certainly know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people ought to look at this and understand this side of your story. I was surprised you are not more popular given that you most certainly have the gift.

  282. Tonight I got the chance to see “The Pelican Brief” and it nothing short of a suspenseful thriller. This movie that stars Denzel Washington and the lovely, Julia Roberts is a complex story based on Julia’s character, Darby Shaw, and how she tries to attach the White House to the assassination of two supreme justices. Darby with research finds the connection between the government and the killings, and is determined to let the truth be known with her “Pelican Brief”. Since her brief became known in the government Darby was under attack. Denzel’s character Gray Grantham, who is a journalist for the Washington Herald, takes the liberty to aid Darby in her search for the truth. It was very compelling to watch how powerful a journalist can be seeking justice in our country. Though I can admit that I don’t know if I would be courageous enough to attack the government after realizing that they are out to kill me, but it still empowers me to see what people can do to shed light on truth. Even though this particular story is fictional it doesn’t mean that journalists today aren’t doing exactly what Gray did to make sure that the right people were framed for the murder. I also want to say how much I admire the fact that people truly do whatever it takes to, in real terms, “rack the muck” or rather scrap up the corruption that we so commonly see in our government.

  283. It’s hard to come by well-informed people for this subject, but you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks

  284. I seriously love your site.. Excellent colors & theme. Did you create this website yourself? Please reply back as I’m hoping to create my own personal blog and want to learn where you got this from or what the theme is called. Appreciate it!

  285. I thought it was interesting how this week’s Must See Monday was planned before the Tucson shooting occurred because the topic, “Communities in Crisis: Ethical Consideration for Journalists” is a fitting issue to discuss after such a tragedy. Nevertheless, the Must See Monday gave helpful insight on how to truthfully report and cover a crisis while remaining ethically sound that I think every journalist ought to know.Ina Jaffe from NPR West explained how she covered her first breaking news story, the Cleveland School shooting. One day, a man referred to as a loner showed up on the schoolyard and just started shooting around. Many children, mainly Southeast Asian refugees, were killed or wounded. Jaffe’s story was on how the school was patching up bullet holes, cleaning the schoolyard and planning to open the next day. Jaffe was horrified to have to stick a mic in the face of a child who just saw their classmates shot, but her editor said to not interview children. Instead, Jaffe reported on the scene and talked to people who were not children. Although children were the main ones who witnessed the event, interviewing them was crossing that ethical line that could have made the situation worse and more tragic. Children may have given insight into the horrific occurrence, but interviewing such young children would have brought more suffering.Based on his own experience covering tragedies and communities in crisis, Victor Merina from Reznet talked about the importance of observing your surroundings in addition to conducting interviews. When journalists are looking for that golden quote, they often fail at other things such as observing the location and people for the story. Observation can add much richness to stories and help the audience get a better picture of the scene. Merina also mentioned the importance of spending time with the people you interview to get a better understanding for the story. By taking that extra time to understand and make your sources feel comfortable, you build their trust and are more likely to gain helpful information for your article.I feel that this week’s Must See Monday gave valuable information and tips that many Cronkite students may need to use in their futures as journalists.

  286. “The Pelican Brief” was another movie about the dangers that journalists my face when the are muck racking. It also is another example at how shady the government is, yet they yield plenty of power and will use it if they do not like something that is being said. I know that these movies are to inform us but they also inflict plenty of fear. It shows you that this world is not all peaceful and dandy, but it is our job to make sure that the public is aware. I guesss heros impose alot of danger upon themselves. I hope that once I become an investigative reporter it is not as risky for me. Either way I will do whatever it takes to shine light on the truth. Truth will always prevail.

  287. Thomas Jefferson once famously said, “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” The significance of Jefferson’s quote extends beyond his disdain towards bureaucratic governments, but into two principles of journalism: accountability and objectivity. In the movie The Pelican Brief, this meant exposing corrupt government officials—including the president of the United States—in a cover-up that brought about the death of two Supreme Court justices and other characters. Darby Shaw, the law student whose professor was murdered (portrayed by Julia Roberts) sought out Gray Grantham a Washington news reporter (portrayed by Denzel Washington) to help unearth the injustices committed. The movie concluded with Grantham going to press with the information, and justice was held to those who committed the crimes. Thematically, The Pelican Brief exemplifies journalism principles to correctly differentiate the difference between fact and fiction, and to hold onto those convictions tightly—even when the consequences loom large.

  288. obviously like your web-site however you have to test the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find it very troublesome to inform the truth on the other hand I’ll surely come back again.

  289. Tonight’s Must See Monday was truly inspiring, Eric Newton gave us a lot of food for thought. He emphasized how technology is ever changing in this digital age and how many of the common uses of technology nowadays were a “crazy idea” represented in the entertainment industry. For instance, the concept of video calling (aka Skype) was first in The Jetsons and the concept of cell phones was introduced in Star Trek. But these crazy futuristic ideas became realities, which shows how important it is to think outside the box in order to bring on advancements in this new age. These advancements are what will move journalism along and promote progress and that makes it so that it accommodates the general public. The focus is always on the reader and what appeals to them so it is important to accommodate them. As journalists it is important to keep updated on all these advancements and incorporate them in their work.

  290. Reporting truthfully and accurately without further hurting victims during natural and man-made disasters was the theme of Must See Monday featuring Victory Merina from Reznet, and Ina Jaffe from NPR. The speakers covered how trauma isn’t always just for the victims of the disasters, it often can extend to the journalists covering wars, deaths and other disasters which increases the difficultly in covering the news right. Jaffe said her first breaking news event was a school shooting in 1989 in Los Angeles, in which the shooter killed 5-6 kids. “I covered the scene of them patching up the bullet holes so they could go to school the next day, but I was terrified of having to talk to children and stick a microphone in their face after this event,” Jaffe said. Jaffe said you cannot make it worse, that’s the bottom line do not make it worse for the people that are involved. Merina brought up covering the Rodney King case, he explained that covering the deaths resulting from the riots was the most challenging for the reporters. He said that he had to talk to someone who was open first before approaching the family as a whole, because they will allow the others to trust you. They said that trying to be humane as possible and showing respect helps all reporters trying to cover these stories. They also said that deadlines can’t affect our ability to get the full story, it’s a sign of respect to give the story the time it needs. The two said that it is troubling if you get this wrong as a human being, and increase the damage to the people dealing with sorrow. Respect for the victims was the theme of the night, as all cases they talked about demanded respect for the victims, the event, and the other people involved. Being able to connect to the people involved opened the door for Merina in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, because it allows for people to see that your not out to harm them. As a Cronkite student, I feel that we are blessed with the proper tools and training to allow us to cover these events right. We are required to take ethics, but also we learn how to report ‘old-fashioned,’ and more to get the best story not just the quick story. That training allows for us to be human beings as well as reporters.

  291. Wow! Thank you! I continuously needed to write on my blog something like that. Can I implement a fragment of your post to my website?

  292. Today’s Must See Monday featured Eric Newton, and his presentation was about the History of the Future of News: What 1767 Tells Us About 2110. At first, I had no idea what to expect. I was not understanding the title and thought I was not going to enjoy it. I was wrong. All of the information Newton gave us was all in front of our faces the entire time, I just never put two and two together. For example, when Newton presented the pictures about Star Trek and the cell phone, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the iPad, and Skype from the Jetsons, I was in shock that I have never noticed that before. What really impressed me was how he predicted the future from the movies and television shows we have now. It is scary to me that we are expecting to have media implants that will make us humans part of technology. It is frightening! Newton said that at some point in time, people will be able to answer questions after they have passed away. It is overwhelming, but we cannot stop it now. In Newton’s words, “Each American generation comes of age as a different news medium is rising.”

  293. In this day and age news and media are constantly changing. As Eric Newton said, “Every American grows up with a new form of media in ascendence.” In the beginning there were pamphlets, which transcended into weekly newspapers and soon daily newspapers and the Associated Press. Over the years media continually evolved and is still doing so. Approximately every 80 years there is a “great awakening” that seems to bring about even more change. Science fiction writers use their imaginations, where as most people tend to predict what will happen based on what is known. The examples Newton used in showing similarities between technology now and science fiction were interesting. They ranged from The Jetsons and Skype to Star Trek and cell phones. The discussion of what is next in media was particularly intriguing to me. The possibilities are endless. There is so much that can be done with technology, but like Newton said, “To get to this future, someone has to shape it.”

  294. Thank you for writing this awesome article. I’m a long time reader but I’ve never been compelled to leave a comment. I subscribed to your blog and shared this on my Facebook. Thanks again for a great post!

  295. I really can’t believe how great this site is. Keep up the good work. I’m going to tell all my friends about this place.

  296. Eric Newton, Senior Advisor to the President of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation gave Cronkite students a glimpse into the future tonight. The future, as Newton described it, is one in which journalism and mass communication is constantly changing, just as it has for centuries. Newton’s future involves everything from “news bots” to “cranial implants.” Technology that currently feels at home in a science fiction movie but according to Newton the future he described “is definitely crazy so it might just happen.” In fact science fiction is exactly what Newton points to if we want a peek of what the future may have in store for us. Shows like Star Trek and The Jetsons have already demonstrated this by predicting current technology like cell phones and Skype. As members of the beginning of the digital age Newton believes we are simply “scratching the surface” of what this era has in store for us. As technology progresses so will the future of journalism. “The technology has driven the future of news,” said Newton.

  297. That sure is one pretty site you have there. Can I ask you a very simple question? What kind of fertilizer do you use to make it grow so wonderfully?

Don’t be surprised if everyone at work asks why you’re so happy. You don’t need to tell them that you visit this site each and every day. It’ll be your little secret.

  299. Eric Newton sparked thrilling thoughts about the future during his appearance at this week’s Must See Monday. The Senior Adviser to the President of the Knight Foundation spoke today about the evolution of mass media throughout the years. Years ago no one knew that we would be in the digital age today. Cell phones and Skype were once only science fiction, portrayed in shows such as “The Jetsens” and “Star Trek.” Technology is always changing, and so is the media. It will be interesting to see how changes in technology and media will affect communication and journalism in the coming years. Much will change in the next couple of years because as of right now “we are only scratching the surface of the digital age.” Eric Newton certainly presented the crowd with very futuristic ideas of what will become of the world. “Think crazy,” Newton said. He predicts that within the next one-hundred years or so technology and media will transition through many stages ultimately leading to World War 4.0 a war between humans and robots. Who knows…

  300. Would love to get a presentation and view technologies that can be transfered from the Davis Campus.Regards,RajDr. Raj Nihalani, M.D, RAC(US)

  301. Victor Medina and Mrs. a former writer for “LA Times” was the speaker he covered many different aspects of the journalism world, both god and bad. The LA riots was one of his first experiences. That had to be very scary. He touched on the ethics of journalism and getting the truth of your story out there and not harming the victim at the same time. But there is really no way to necessarily getting around causing further damage. Also the Rodney King case was brought up and the after effects of that. It all made me think about journalism and my what my goal is. Good thing i don’t play to do touchy stories like these.
