J.R. Martinez and Sara Ganim: My 2011 Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year

Sportswoman of the Year: Sara Ganim

Sara Ganim started reporting on the Penn State scandal long before anyone else. Her journalism efforts weren’t otherworldly; they were just solid and unrelenting.

The story was going to break no matter what. But, she got to it first and didn’t let go. She had Sandusky covered from late March through April to the Fall.

Ganim represents honor and doing one’s job with integrity. Her story is kind of simple, but worthy of more mention. She went on TV talk shows when getting credit from heavyweights like CNN and spoke eloquently of being a crime reporter in the face of horrible crimes and following the story to the just end by including those most affected.

The Penn State story almost eclipses the O.J. story. It is that salacious and that disappointing. It probably beats the Tiger Woods story. Penn State will never be forgotten, like Kent State (now Kent).

The tragedy of Penn State was how this man could get away with his crimes for so long. Sara is in her early twenties. If she was born earlier and had become a crime reporter for the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania paper sooner, maybe Sandusky would have been put away much earlier.

With her reporting the story in the Pennsylvania area, Sara might have saved one more child or two from that monster. It’s impossible to say for sure.

Sportsman of the Year: J.R. Martinez

After the war, after the burns and after the scars, there was motivational speaking and some acting to accomplish. Then, came an invitation to a competition.

He made himself a popular culture icon by winning a grueling athletic contest on arguably television’s biggest production, ‘Dancing With The Stars.’

J.R. Martinez did what no one could have predicted.

He survived an IED blast while serving in the Army.

Then, after 30 surgeries later and with his facial disfigurement, he showed more courage.

He showed a national audience what more discipline and desire can do.

He won DWTS and he did it in thrilling fashion.

He proves over and over everyday how important it is to be proud of who you are, no matter what you look like or what anyone might think of you. Again, a simple act in some respects, but one that deserves just a little more recognition.

Pink Slip Virus – 10 More NFL Coaches Who Could Get Fired By The End Of The Season…

Email Post Email Post
raheem morris tampa bay buccaneers

In a league where results are being demanded as swiftly as ever, no less than three National Football League coaches have been axed in a two-week period – starting with Jack Del Rio (after nine-plus years) in Jacksonville and escalating this week with Kansas City’s Todd Haley (less than a year removed from a playoff berth) and Miami’s Tony Sparano.

Is the head coaching turnover about to get as bad as the NHL or even the NBA (where all 15 Eastern Conference teams changed coaches in a two-year period in the mid-2000s)? That remains to be seen, but I see no less than 10 additional changes that may be made when the 2011 regular season closes January 1, or even after the playoffs.

Maybe it’s just global warming, but here are the coaches skating on the thin ice that JDR, Haley, and Sparano have already broken through. [Read more...]

Mike Leach Continues To Rip Into Craig James In Radio Interview On Scott Van Pelt Show

Mike-Leach

Mike Leach’s inner pirate came out on the Scott Van Pelt show Thursday when he continued to take shots at Craig James.

Mike Leach has held nothing back from the public since being fired at Texas Tech and continues to insist that Craig James’ smear campaign against him is what cost him his job. Leach even went as far as to write a book that gave some insight into some of the falsehoods by Craig James and his son that caused Texas Tech to fire him.

Leach has moved on since Texas Tech by becoming the head football coach at Washington State but he still has no problem taking verbal jabs at the person he perceives got him fired. [Read more...]

5 Simple Mistakes Sam Hurd Made Dealing Drugs That Prove He Never Watched ‘The Wire’ or ‘Breaking Bad’

Sam Hurd is currently involved in one of the more ridiculous stories in recent memory: A professional athlete making millions of dollars per year to run around and catch a ball has been accused of running a multi-million dollar drug ring.

The details of the story are what make it unbelievable, especially considering the amount of time that cable TV has dedicated to the “art” of drug dealing in the last 10 years. Sam Hurd obviously never watched The Wire. If he had, he would have found very simple ways to avoid getting into trouble.

Are The Detroit Lions Playoff Bound in 2011?

The Detroit Lions were one of the feel-good stories of the 2011 NFL season nine weeks ago. Winners of their first five games, the Lions were marching towards what appeared to be an eventual playoff appearance.

Fast forward nine weeks and, while still in the playoff picture, the Lions’ roar has subsided to a meow as the team has gone 3-5 since its perfect start.

At 8-5, the Lions are now masters of their own playoff destiny. [Read more...]

College Football Bowl Game TV Schedule and Point Spreads

College football bowl games start this Saturday, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Even with all the controversy (I don’t like BCS system either) I still love the experience of hanging out with family and watching teams duke it out for bragging rights. It’s also a great look into how potential high draft picks perform in high pressure/high stakes games.

Are there bowl games that are going to be more entertaining than others? Of course, but I really recommend you to try to watch as many of them as possible.

Baron Batch and Operation Random Christmas Blessing

Email Post Email Post
baron_batch-operation-random-christmas-blessing

Following sports is so much fun, but occasionally, negative situations sour us to the athletes involved and even athletes in general.

In fact, it seems like there are so many athletes that are doing things “the wrong way,” that when an athlete like Tim Tebow comes along who is doing things “the right way,” he gets beaten into our heads so much that we end up turning on him as well.

Personally, I think that there are just many good guys in the sports world as there are bad guys; it’s just that they don’t make as compelling of a story.

Everyone loves to read about the guy that choked his coach, or broke a television, or stomped on a dude’s arm…so an athlete reading to a bunch of kindergartners isn’t that big of a story.

However, there is one athlete – maybe an athlete that folks outside the Midwest have never even heard of – who is doing things the right way.

Meet Baron Batch.

Chicago Bears WR Sam Hurd Arrested on Drug Charges, Allegedly Dealt to NFL Players

Sam Hurd

As if injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, losing three straight games after winning five straight, and watching the playoff hopes of the Chicago Bears become more and more distant with each passing week wasn’t enough…news just broke that Bears’ receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on drug charges.

This isn’t the “caught with a a gram or two of marijuana” drug arrest. This is a HUGE drug arrest (details here), one that not only includes marijuana but cocaine and LARGE amounts of both. Like $575,000 worth of cocaine. It’s become clear that playing in the NFL was secondary to Hurd, and it it will likely cost him and the league big time.
