8 Things We Learned This Weekend

Drew Brees shattered records this year with the help of his sentient Muppet football.

All of my teams lost this weekend, so I’m really in no mood to think about sports, let alone write about them. But perhaps this little exercise in which I review what we learned this weekend in sports will be therapeutic and help me prepare for the months of heartache that surely lie ahead.

Maybe by taking a look at all the wonderful and curious things that are happening in the world of sports, I can learn to become a passive observer who can relax as I enjoy watching feats of athleticism, competition, gamesmanship, and sportsmanship, instead of a fan whose weekend is wrecked when Evansville loses a close game to Tennessee Tech (at home).

I’ll give it a try. Here’s what we learned this weekend.

Jay Cutler Dominates: Are You Suffering From Jay Cutler Deficiency Disorder? I Am…

Email Post Email Post
jay-cutler-dominates

These past four weeks have been absolutely terrible if you’re an avid Jay Cutler fan like myself.

Not only has the “great one” been sidelined with a very serious and dangerous thumb injury that could have cost Cutler his life (or at least his ability to give his fiancee Kristen Cavallari thumbs up or thumbs down on potential outfits), but the Bears, while still remaining the greatest team in the NFL, have dropped four straight and will most likely miss the playoffs.

This had me feeling really blue for the past few weeks, and after the Bears’ loss to the Seahwawks last Sunday, I went to the doctors’ office to see what was wrong. The doctor said it was quite clear what I had: Jay Cutler Deficiency Disorder.

Pittsburgh Steelers at San Francisco 49ers: Monday Night Football Preview and Prediction

In one of the most promising, if not the best, Monday Night Football match-ups of the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3) head west to take on the San Francisco 49ers (10-3).

Unlike last week’s less-than-stellar showing from the Rams and Seahawks, this game features two teams each near the top of their conference, both fighting for playoff seeding and the hope of a first-round bye.

The game will kick off a crazy holiday week for the NFL, with games on five of the next eight days. This one has the potential to be a slugfest and will definitely be worth watching Monday night.

WCOFF Shutdown – ‘Outside the Lines’ piece on World Championship of Fantasy Football details winners’ unpaid frustration

Earlier this year, I chronicled the story of Fanball Inc., which shut down its fantasy sports franchises (CDM, NFFC/NFBC, and Fantasy Cup among them) that they had bought out previously. Since then, the original owners of CDM and NFFC/NFBC have re-acquired their franchises and now exist under the original umbrella.

This Sunday, ESPN’s Outside the Lines did a piece on another long-time fantasy sports franchise that ran into trouble in 2011 and ultimately shut down.

Update: The late-arriving spreads have arrived! All picks are in.

So maybe I’m the Tim Tebow of picking games?

Obviously this is a ridiculous analogy, because the pious Tebow surely would never indulge in such hedonistic pursuits as gambling or, in my case, analyzing spreads and picking games for sport with no monetary investment.

But the evidence of my Tebowness as a handicapper is building.

Adding 8 more teams/cities to the NFL would amount to a total of 40 teams, up from the current 32. The eight divisions would have 5 teams each instead of 4.

The question is, who should new franchises be awarded to?
