On Monday, the college basketball season officially tips off.  Just take a minute to let those words sink in.

Throughout the season, my goal is to highlight notable games so you can plan your weeknights and weekends accordingly. This week is fairly light until we get to Friday…when there are over 120 games to choose from, including the much anticipated Carrier Classic between Michigan State and North Carolina.

Update: Our Week 10 start em, sit em advice is posted, and this week’s post includes an opportunity for one MSF reader to win free NFL tickets. Make sure you check it out after you finish going through the waiver pickups.

There are no teams on bye in Week 10, but don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security.

The Texans, Colts, Saints, and Steelers are all on bye in Week 11, which means a lot of fantasy firepower will be sitting on benches during one of the final weekends of playoff positioning.

Don’t get caught snoozing; take this opportunity not just to improve your lineup for Week 10 but also to plan ahead for any lineup vacancies impending next week.

NFL “Suck For Luck” Power Rankings: Week 10

Last week, I created a new photo story that received a very positive response. It was called “Sucks For Luck” and serves to show just how much pressure is being put on Andrew Luck with so many people discussing him as if he’s a no-doubt savior for whatever team sucks bad enough this year to draft him.

The Magic didn’t end 20 years ago

Magic Johnson, Nov. 7, 1991

In every youngster’s life there are moments that you remember forever.

One that will always stand out in my mind and resonate deeply occurred Nov. 7, 1991.

I vividly recall being picked up from a day in eighth grade in San Diego by my dad. He looked pale, almost shocked. My friend and I inquired as we hopped into the van.

“Magic Johnson just retired,” he said. “He has AIDS.”

Altogether now, let’s point and laugh at Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets won a pivotal AFC East battle against upstart Buffalo today. Actually, “won” is too tame of a verb. They vanquished the Bills, reminding Buffalo which team has been to two straight AFC title games and which team hasn’t made the playoffs since…since…well who the hell can remember back that far?

Buffalo dominated 27-11, and the game wasn’t really that close. The Jets ran relatively well, played outstanding defense, and followed Sanchez’s efficient 20-28, 230-yard, 1 TD day to victory.

Despite the W, however, Sanchez is likely to be one of Week 9′s biggest punchlines because of this play that occurred late in the 4th quarter.

At long last, the season is finally here, so the only thing left for me to do is roll out my Top 30 (because 25 just wasn’t enough), dust off my Kelvin Sampson voodoo doll, and start enjoying what should be a terrific college basketball season.

Video of Tom Brady mocking the Giants before Super Bowl 42 always good for a laugh

The Giants and Patriots face off today for the first time since Super Bowl 42, which as you’ll remember was not only one of the biggest upsets in football history but also one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever.

A major part of the backstory was the pregame jawing between the confident underdog Giants and the perhaps overconfident Patriots. That overconfidence was best manifested by this now-infamous line by Tom Brady, and it’s always good for a chuckle in hindsight.

Fantasy Football Week 9 Stock Report: Blount, Flacco, more

All the talk this year has mainly been of the struggles of Chris Johnson and Philip Rivers.  As painful as it is to watch, dwelling on the problems will set you back.

Six team byes have been scaled back down to four this week, so fewer players will be sitting out of your matchups, but it will still likely necessitate at least one or two touch decisions; decisions you shouldn’t take lightly, because while this may be the middle of the season for the players, our playoffs are right around the corner and crunch time is upon us.

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers Preview and Prediction

The AFC North is usually one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, at least at the tops, and its best two teams will square off Sunday night in Pittsburgh.

The 5-2 Baltimore Ravens will head to Pittsburgh to face the 6-2 Steelers in Heinz Field, where the Steelers are 4-0 this season. The Ravens embarrassed the Steelers in Week 1, winning 35-7. The Steelers had seven turnovers in that game, and the Ravens coasted to victory.

Sunday night’s game should be much more competitive this time around.

A couple of weeks back, Keith Mullett told you about what he called “the best alternative to fantasy football and sports betting ever.” He was referring to the weekly fantasy sports challenges offered at FanDuel and Daily Joust (for those who like fantasy college football) that we have been promoting throughout football season here at MSF.

Fortunately for all of us, FanDuel has stepped up with yet another freeroll tournament for this week both as a reward for MSF’s participation in their affiliate program and as a way to encourage you to try out their great service for free while competing for real money prizes.

It is an annual rite of passage: as soon as the World Series is over, baseball fans outside of the still-celebrating title city turn their attention to that year’s free agents. Yes, the hot stove heats up and doesn’t cool until pitchers and catchers report.
