Fighting Sioux

In this episode of the Away From the Action Podcast, I talk to Drew Lange about the Jerry Sandusky scandal and how much blame should fall on Joe Paterno, the North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname controversy and recent actions taken by North Dakota’s governor and legislature, the BCS, the FCS playoff experience, and much more.

(And as usual, I find a way to bring up the Evansville Purple Aces.)

Video: Penn State student addresses his peers and makes the point that many of them seem to be missing

You and I and scores of other people who are thousands of miles removed from State College, Pennsylvania have spent the last 36 hours following and remarking on the evolving Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. Multitudes of opinions are being offered, including here at MSF (some of which are spot on and relevant and others that probably miss the point.

In everything I personally have seen or read about this situation, and specifically regarding how Penn State students are handling it – an angle I am very interested in having once been a part of an emotional on-campus coach controversy roller coaster – nothing has been more compelling than this video of a Penn State student addressing his peers:

Andrew-Luck

There is no game of the century this week, but there are still plenty of great college football games that could decide who will be playing in their conference championship games (and who will win weekly fantasy college football challenges).

This week’s marquee matchup is out west in the Pac-12 as #7 Oregon heads south to take on #4 Stanford and its much-desired QB Andrew Luck.   There are not that many other matchups featuring ranked teams playing each other, but there still are some very intriguing games.

Fantasy Football Start em, Sit em Advice for Week 10

There are many different factors that make fantasy football difficult: bye weeks; injuries; random lucky days for your opponent; and worst of all, Chris Johnson.

In my opinion though, the hardest thing is staying in the present.

What do I mean?

According to Ben Jones, the Penn State football reporter for BlackShoeDiaries.com, this was the scene outside of Joe Paterno’s house just a few minutes ago at 5:15 CT today.

For the man who was once college football’s most revered of legends, it has come to this.

Could this be the nadir of the Indianapolis Colts’ winless agony?

indy-weather-advisory

The Indianapolis Colts, after a decade of 10-win seasons, have opened the 2011 season at 0-9. While this does make them the favorites in the most closely watched NFL draft sweepstakes ever, it also places them just seven wins away from joining the Detroit Lions in the winless infamy.

Fortunately for Colts fans, the winlessness could end this weekend. The hapless Jacksonville Jaguars and their bumbling rookie QB Blaine Gabbert come to town on Sunday, giving the Colts their best chance of achieving victory in 2011. I even picked them to, at a minimum, cover the 3-point spread.

Should the Colts find a way to vanquish Jack Del Rio’s crew, then this Reddit post I was just thoroughly entertained by may prove to be the nadir of the Colts’ awful, ignominious season.

Should Penn State cancel or postpone this Saturday’s home game against Nebraska? [Poll]

Let see preface this entire post by saying that I don’t know what my own answer is to the question I’m posing: should Penn State cancel or postpone this Saturday’s home game against Nebraska?

But I think it’s one job of the blogger to provide a forum for relevant discussions not being had elsewhere, and whether the answer is “yes” or “no” I certainly think this question is relevant.

At sports bars around the country, Sunday Night Football between the Steelers and Ravens was in full flight on multiple HD big screens with the volume turned up.

With a little luck, the semi-final for the MLS Cup, going on at the same time as SNF, between Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy (with arguably the greatest tandem ever in U.S. club Soccer history , Donovan and Beckham), was on one minor, smaller screen without volume.

Ron Washington v Bob Knight: Tale of the (Secret) Tape

Email Post Email Post
bob-knight-ron-washington-secret-audio-locker-room-speeches

On a cold fall evening just a few weeks ago, Ron Washington unleashed a torrent of expletives and positive reinforcement on a veteran group of Texas Rangers that was just hours away from the first pitch of Game 7 of the World Series.

On a presumably cold winter’s night in Bloomington back in 1991, Bob Knight unleashed a torrent of expletives and threats on a young, talented group of Indiana Hoosiers that spent most of the year in the top 10 and that was a year away from a Final 4 appearance and two years away from spending the majority of the season ranked as the top team in the land.

At the time each man was speaking, he was unaware that his words would ever leave the locker room, but they did.

In this post, a tale of the (secret) tape if you will, I am going to break down these two locker room speeches, which while similar in diction could not be more different in tone.

The UNI-Dome during this season's homecoming game against Indiana State. Picture provided by the UNI athletic department.

Temperatures in Fargo are expected to drop below freezing this weekend, but the 19,000 fans who come out to watch the top-ranked North Dakota State Bison face Missouri Valley Football Conference rival Youngstown State on Saturday won’t need to wear long underwear and stocking caps. And they won’t have to pour coffee on their hands to thaw their numb fingers. (What? You’ve never done that?)

Bison faithful will be comfortable inside the Fargodome, the multi-purpose facility the city of Fargo opened in 1992.
