More Than a Soldier or Friend, A Hero

Never forget those who have fought for your freedom.

It was the most peaceful photo I had ever seen.

Jake in his uniform with a beautiful, vibrant young woman next to him, their backs facing toward me, leaning on one another, with the beauty of nature in the background; a perfect blue sky.

It is a photo that tells all.

You can feel their happiness and love in this photo even without the image of their faces. It was like the perfect stock photo you find when you buy a new frame.

Peace.

Harmony.

And above all, love.

“Do you know his girlfriend?”

And my daydream comes to an end when my friend Alex refers to the woman in the photo, Caitlin.

I am forced to face reality again.

It’s been a crazy, inconsistent first half of football. Maybe your fantasy team is more consistent than mine has been. Maybe you have one of these these fellas on your team. Either way, I hope you’re doing better than me.

Let’s take a look at the injuries for the week!

Penn State-Nebraska Preview: Point Spread, Analysis, Poll, and Prediction

State College has been the focus of the sports world, but not for reasons they or anyone else wanted.

The scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is still unfolding, detail after disgusting detail.  The case has been well documented, so I won’t go into the details here outside of their relevance to Saturday’s game.

Introducing “The Assembly Call”

the-assembly-call

I follow and am intrigued by a wide variety of sports and sports stories. I especially love playing and analyzing fantasy sports. And I have several strong rooting interests, such as the Chicago White Sox, that I follow very closely.

But if you added it all up and weighed the sum of that sports interest, intrigue, and passion, it would not come close to equaling my love for Indiana Hoosiers basketball.

This is what happens when you grow up in Bloomington, Indiana attending home games with your father. Hoosier hoops are in my blood and always will be, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So needless to say, watching games is a pretty intense experience for me.

Same Old Story: MLS Needs The Galaxy to Win

Was David Beckham leading us on over the last 4+ seasons? Did he plan things this way?

He, Donovan, Keane and the others win at home for his last match of his old contract to win MLS Cup for his first time. It all seems to be perfect timing. But, then again, it would have been perfect timing in any one of the previous four seasons.

Thursday games are here! College basketball is here! WSOP wrapped up, but the replays are going on.

Between all of this excitement (and this vile madness), it may be tough to do the research on your players; I know it was for me. But with the fantasy playoffs in sight, and another freeroll tournament you really should participate in, these last few weeks are pivotal in assuring you make it to the playoffs.

NFL Midseason Awards

The NFL season is half over, and many stories that seemed oh-so important back in August now have little bearing on the season.

We fans fretted and conversed about the lockout and missed training camps, the kickoff rule change, a certain “Dream Team” in Philadelphia, and a #1 overall draft pick who just wasn’t going to cut it as an NFL quarterback; but few predicted the Bengals, Giants and 49ers would lead their divisions at this point.

Joe Paterno: No longer college football’s “Immortal”

After contributing what I think is an important question to the national dialogue about the Penn State scandal, and then relaying what I think is essential perspective from a close friend, I was all ready to go to bed.

Then I saw the front page of ESPN.com, and the spectacular juxtaposition of images jarred me to the point of one more post.

I’ll just let the screenshot below speak for itself before I comment:

Perspective: “Having Been In Joe Paterno’s Shoes…”

Editor’s note: I did not write what you will read in this post. What you will read below was written by my business partner and one of my closest and most respected friends, Derick Schaefer.

He emailed me the text below earlier tonight with the following preface:

“You know me. . . I’m always inspired to do the right thing. We do have site that can reach thousands of people. One connection can make a difference.  Personally, I don’t care about the Penn State circus. Rightfully so, those responsible will go to jail and those who didn’t do enough will see their careers ruined. However, since the attention is high, I do feel the right message could inspire others to do the right thing.

What follows are Derick’s words, not mine.

Should Penn State cancel or move Saturday’s game against Nebraska? (It bears asking again.)

Yesterday, I posted the following question: Should Penn State cancel or postpone this Saturday’s home game against Nebraska?

Tonight, in light of Joe Paterno’s firing and reports of unruly mobs in State College, I want to reiterate that question but with an important distinction: Should Penn State cancel or move Saturday’s game against Nebraska?

Jay Cutler Dominates: No Really…He Does

Jay Cutler Helmet

I’ve been writing my column “Jay Cutler Dominates” for some time now, and it’s been one of the most fun things to write because it lets me poke some fun at my favorite team’s quarterback in, admittedly, completely absurd ways; and I try to counter any anger you might get from reading the article by making it funny and pretty obviously sarcastic.

But in this week’s installment of “Jay Cutler Dominates” I am going to ditch the humor and sarcasm and try to get a legitimate point across.

What a slow, boring day in the sports world.

Since there aren’t any sports stories of importance to follow or write about, but since pageviews aren’t just going to create themselves, here is a 49-second video of a dude performing incredible boomerang trick shots that will probably be seen by more people than any well thought-out piece I could spend hours writing regarding the important sports stories that aren’t currently going on.
