It happened a bit late last night, 10:00 on the east coast, but I imagine by now the majority of you have seen or heard about Bob Costas’ interview with Jerry Sandusky on last night’s episode of Rock Center with Brian Williams.
If you haven’t, here is the interview in full. It is absolutely must-watch for anyone who has had even the slightest peripheral interest in this story (which, I assume, is pretty much everyone).
I’ll let you watch it, provide a few comments of my own, and that we can use the comment section for an open discussion on the latest details in this awful story.
Bob Costas
I have always been a fan of Bob Costas’ work (save for his occasional propensity to lose perspective and be an agent of extreme hyperbole), but I have never been as impressed with him as I was last night. He handled that entire segment, both the interview and the breakdown with Williams afterwards, perfectly. Well done Bob.
Jerry Sandusky
I’ve been fully convinced of his guilt ever since the grand jury report came out, and no details that have come to light since then have altered my mind in the slightest. I didn’t know it was possible, but last night Sandusky further cemented by belief of his guilt and bone chilling creepiness.
I’m sorry, but if someone accused me of sexually molesting children, I would be shouting from the rooftops as emphatically as I could that it wasn’t true. And though I suppose you could say that Sandusky tried to do this with the Costas interview, but I sure as hell wouldn’t have to think twice when asked if I am sexually attracted to you boys. What the hell was that?
And isn’t it relatively common knowledge that people who repeat a question back to you before answering are likely to be lying and using the question repeat as a device for collecting their thoughts? I’ve at least found this to be empirically true in my own life, so I found that telling.
I didn’t think I could be creeped out and angered by this story any more, but Sandusky succeeded in doing it with his answer to that question about attraction by Costas.
Frankly, I didn’t really need to hear anything else, because of course it’s in Sandusky’s personal interest to not admit to the worst of the charges. So his answers didn’t surprise me and held no sway. Perhaps the vast mountain of the worst of the evidence against him will come tumbling down; but when you can’t unequivocally state that you aren’t sexually attracted to young boys, the burden of proof just shifted to you in The Court of Jerod Morris.
I could make other observations, but I don’t want to think about this disgusting monster any more. So I won’t.
Sandusky’s Lawyer Joseph Amendola
The guys seems like a creep shyster himself. And based on this story that broke last night, be probably is. Appears to me like Sandusky and Amendola are an attorney-client match made in Hell.
**********
I keep waiting for this story to hit rock bottom, and it just never does. Sandusky not being able to abjectly deny a sexual attraction to young boys last night – in the same interview in which he admitted to showering with young boys like it’s no big deal – just sunk it even lower.
Let’s all just hope someone (certainly not TMZ) is keeping a close eye on this sick and vile man while he’s free on bail, because I think he is fundamentally deranged in his head. I know I’m not at all qualified to make such an observation, so take it for what it’s worth, but that’s my impression after last night.
Okay, I’m done. I feel like I need to go wash my hands after typing about this.
