The Harbaugh-Schwartz incident reminded me of this old Mr. Show sketch

Email Post Email Post

I couldn’t watch yesterday’s post-game incident between 49ers’ coach Jim Harbaugh and Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz without being reminded of this 1996 sketch from Mr. Show With Bob and David. It’s a 7-minute sketch, and the similarities don’t become clear until about 6 minutes in, but it’s worth the watch (if only because Mr. Show was awesome).

In Harbaugh v Schwartz, everyone wins*

Much has been made of the postgame brouhaha between 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, and with good reason.

It’s not often that we see a coach react to a win as exuberantly and – some might say – disrespectfully as Harbaugh did. Likewise, it’s not often that we see a coach react as angrily and physically as Schwartz did.

All in all it was a pretty shocking display from both coaches, especially in a league where every effort is made to remove any and all individual expressions of emotion.

That, in addition to a few other reasons, is why everyone was a winner in Harbaugh v Schwartz – assuming the NFL does the right thing and rebukes both coaches (hence the asterisk in the title).

NFL “Suck 4 Luck” Power Rankings: Week 7

Email Post Email Post
suck-for-luck-power-rankings-week-14

A few days ago, Andrew Luck said it was “stupid” for fans of NFL teams to wish losses upon their favorite franchises in the hopes that it would possibly position them to draft the Stanford signal-caller. As Pro Football Talk accurately predicted, “Luck might not like it, but the ‘Suck for Luck’ campaigns aren’t going away.”

No, they most certainly are not; not when quarterback is by far the most important position on the field, in a sport where it is virtually impossible to win consistently without at least above average play from the position.

So even though this post series’ namesake likely thinks I’m an idiot for continuing to post it, post I will. Because while it may be “stupid” from his view, no one who has a franchise QB is lamenting the losses it likely took to get them. Neither will whoever grabs Luck, as close to a “can’t miss” quarterback prospect as we’ve seen in a long while.

2011 World Series: St. Louis Cardinals v Texas Rangers TV Schedule and Pitching Probables

If I only could bring such good luck to my White Sox.

Two years in a row I have attended Game 6 of the ALCS at The Ballpark in Arlington, and two years in a row I have witnessed the Rangers perform their Ginger Ale celebration in the infield after the game. Last year, it was a close win over the Yankees when Alex Rodriguez struck out. This year, it was an absolute blowout over the Tigers.

So now the Texas Rangers will go to the World Series for the second straight year, with their bats on fire and the bullpen in lockdown mode. Their opponent will the St. Louis Cardinals, who are one of the most improbable World Series contenders ever. The Cardinals were 10.5 games back of the Braves for the Wild Card with a few days left in August. Thanks to a 10-20 finish by the Braves, and their own September surge, the Cardinals stormed into the playoffs and haven’t stopped winning since.

Fantasy Football Week 6 Stock Report: Daniel Thomas, Darrius-Heyward Bay UP; Matt Schaub, Reggie Wayne DOWN

Luckily for a lot of owners, there are not many major players who have a bye this week, except for my team…but I have faith in Jay Cutler!

Regardless, there may be some surprises this week from a few highly unknown RBs.  This position may very well be the most important for owners in terms of touches for players, but on the professional level it is the most dispensable position, as almost anyone can succeed in the right situation.

If you are itching to see how Tim Tebow is going to follow up his breakthrough game in Week 5, then you are going to have to wait until next week, but if you want to hear a bunch of media chatter about him just turn on ESPN.

Having said that, we have a lot of good stuff for you in this week’s Stock Report.

The NFC North features the last two undefeated teams in football in the Packers and Lions, but don’t forget about the other two teams just yet. The two teams below the Packers and Lions are squaring off in a very important game in Chicago.

A showdown between two of the best offenses in college football will occur in the Lone Star State on Saturday as #20 Baylor heads to Kyle Field to take on #21 Texas A&M. Jim Leyland stinkpalmed Ron Washington before Game 5

Yesterday, the Detroit Tigers beat the Texas Rangers in Game 5 of the ALCS, sending the series back to Texas for Game 6 on Saturday and, Tigers fans hope, Game 7 after that.

And while many people will credit a fluky bounce of the ball at third base for turning the tide of Game 5, the secret to the Tigers victory actually came much earlier, during the pregame. That is when Tigers skipper Jim Leyland executed his own form of hit-and-run on Rangers manager Ron Washington, as documented by AP photographer Paul Sancya.
