Bill Gates, an extremely under-the-radar die-hard basketball fan, approaches you with an idea.
The NBA lockout will not be resolved this year. Mr. Gates has decided to fund a rogue basketball league for the next six months. Here are the rules:

The season is already past the halfway point in college football and a sure sign of this is the release of the BCS standings that came out earlier this week.
Teams at the top of the standings are looking to continue to stay undefeated and keep their preseason goals alive of winning a BCS National Championship. This week is has the potential for major upsets as many undefeated teams are playing ranked opponents.

Week 8 of college football is here will hopefully deliver another exciting week. Last week we saw South Carolina barely etch out a win over Mississippi State, LSU continue their dominance, Illinois lose to Ohio State, and Oklahoma State beat Texas.
So settle down, relax, and get ready for another great weekend of college football. On Thursday, the final episode of our yearlong MLB Trivia Challenge will be posted. Ari and I recorded the episode today, and since we spent a good deal of time talking about the World Series matchup between St. Louis and Texas, which begins tomorrow night (full schedule here), I am posting that portion of the podcast now so you can listen to it before the games actually begin.

It pains me not to be writing about the Milwaukee Brewers in this space, but I think I’ll recover faster from a 12-6 loss than I would had the Brewers lost on a Cardinals walk-off.
If I were to write a World Series preview from a Cardinals perspective, it would be full of bias and spite, so I’ll instead focus my efforts on my new (temporary) favorite team, the Texas Rangers, as I preview the 2011 World Series, which starts tomorrow night (TV schedule and pitching probables here).

The Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals have closed a deal that will send exiled quarterback and former Pro Bowler Carson Palmer to the Raiders in exchange for a 2012 first round pick and a conditional 2013 first round pick.
Twitter and Facebook are buzzing about this deal, with most coming to the consensus that Oakland, as they are wont to do, is overpaying for a player with questions surrounding his ability and desire. But if we examine this situation, that might not be true.

Well, that was fast.
As soon as I opened up my big mouth and proclaimed that 2011 was going to be the most prolific fantasy year ever, scoring around the league plummets. No worries.
At least I had a great week on the predictions front, as I was right on nearly 80% of my picks.

I’m a huge fan of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, especially the public service announcements that Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr perform once they reach superstar status. A friend sent along a story from St. Louis’ local CBS affiliate that reminded me of one of those PSAs.

College basketball teams opened practice around the country this past weekend, and nowhere was said opening done with more rhythm and rhyme than in Bloomington, Indiana.
Yes, thanks to sophomore Victor Oladipo, reputations and stereotypes were turned on their heads Saturday evening at the school once known for short shorts and white boys with silky shooting strokes. Not anymore, not after Oladipo serenaded some of the country’s best basketball fans and visiting high school recruits with a rather impressive version of “U Got It Bad” by Usher.

Week Six saw relatively few big fantasy performances, and with some potent offenses among the six teams on bye in Week Seven (Buffalo, Cincinnati, New England, New York Giants, Philadelphia, and San Francisco), that may well repeat itself. The lack of reliable options at some positions, coupled with the bye week crunch, will surely send many owners back to the waiver wire where they will find some intriguing options, particularly at wide receiver.
