Bettor’s Guide: NFL Week 8 Point Spread Picks and Predictions

Okay, now I can exhale a bit. At least for a week.

After two of the worst weeks I’ve ever had picking games against the spread, I rebounded with a solid 7-5-1 in Week 7. That is nothing spectacular, but after going 3-9-1 in Week 6, it got me back on the winning track and move me to 51-47-5 on the year.

What games am I most excited this week? Like last week, there aren’t many overly compelling ones, with New England-Pittsburgh, Dallas-Philly, and KC-San Diego jumping out as notable exceptions.

nfl week 8 picks and point spreadsAnother game I am very curious to see unfold, though certainly not for any expectation of crisp play, is the Denver-Detroit game. The Lions are angry and reeling after two straight home losses, and their QB is a bit banged up. But they get to face a Denver team that needed a miracle to avoid losing to Miami and that will be quarterbacked once again by Tim Tebow.

As I mentioned in this week’s Start/Sit column, I think Tebow can and will play better than he did during the first 55 minutes last Sunday, but it might not happen this week. An indecisive, inaccurate QB against a front line like Detroit’s is not a good matchup.

A couple of quick things to keep in mind:

  • The following teams are on bye this week: Falcons, Bears, Packers, Jets, Raiders, Buccaneers
  • All times are ET.
  • All spread info as of Wednesday afternoon. If you want updated point spread info, or some expert advice as you make your weekly picks, below are a few helpful links.

Now here are your Week 8 picks, along with the point spreads and over-unders for each game.

Free Picks Against the Spread (ATS) – Predictions – Over-Unders

———

Miami Dolphins at New York Giants

  • Dolphins-Giants Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on CBS
  • Dolphins-Giants Point Spread: Giants -10
  • Dolphins-Giants Over-Under Odds: 43.5
  • Dolphins-Giants Spread Pick: With Matt Moore nursing an injury, and Sage Rosenfels dealing with some disorder that will prevent him from playing, the Dolphins may have to turn to…J.P. Losman…this Sunday against the Giants. Gulp. What else do I need to say? Dolphins-Giants free spread pick: Giants -10 | Dolphins-Giants prediction straight up: Giants

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans

  • Jaguars-Texans Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on CBS
  • Jaguars-Texans Point Spread: Texans -9.5
  • Jaguars-Texans Over-Under Odds: 41
  • Jaguars-Texans Spread Pick: How ’bout them Jags, huh? Their plucky performance against Baltimore on Monday night was definitely not one I was expecting, but it showed that this team still has some fight in it. And that means that I’m not about to lay 9.5 points in a divisional game. Plus, with Andre Johnson still not likely to be back to 100%, Houston’s offense still isn’t at its explosive best, depressing their point output and giving Jacksonville a puncher’s chance. Jaguars-Texans free spread pick: Jags +9.5 | Jaguars-Texans prediction straight up: Texans

Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans

  • Colts-Titans Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on CBS
  • Colts-Titans Point Spread: Titans -9
  • Colts-Titans Over-Under Odds: 43.5
  • Colts-Titans Spread Pick: Just so you know, I have zero idea what to expect in this one, which is why I’ll probably end up just taking the points and moving on. Indy as atrocious Sunday night, but it’s not like a blowout was totally unexpected at New Orleans. As for Titans…umm, what the hell was that last week? These two teams are both playing like crap right now, it just depends on whose crap you think will stink a little less on Sunday. Because I have this sneaking suspicion that Chris Johnson is going to torch Indy’s non-existent run D, I’m actually not going to take the points, but just know that I have zero confidence in this pick. Colts-Titans free spread pick: Titans -9 | Colts-Titans prediction straight up: Titans

Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers

  • Vikings-Panthers Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on FOX
  • Vikings-Panthers Point Spread: Panthers -3
  • Vikings-Panthers Over-Under Odds: 48
  • Vikings-Panthers Spread Pick: Despite these two teams’ records, this should be a fun game. Cam Newton and Christian Ponder are up-and-coming young QBs, and both offenses have explosive play-makers in Adrian Peterson and Steve Smith. The difference is to me is that Cam has started all year and is further along in his development than Ponder. In a close games, that could help Newton play with the poise to win, but this one will be close I think. Vikings-Panthers free spread pick: Vikings +3 | Vikings-Panthers prediction straight up: Panthers

New Orleans Saints at St. Louis Rams

  • Saints-Rams Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on FOX
  • Saints-Rams Point Spread: Saints -13
  • Saints-Rams Over-Under Odds: 47.5
  • Saints-Rams Spread Pick: If you watched even just the highlights of the Saints and Rams respective Week 7 games, you’ll know why this pick took me all of about two seconds to make upon seeing the spread. Good luck Rams. Saints-Rams free spread pick: Saints -13 | Saints-Rams prediction straight up: Saints

Arizona Cardinals at Baltimore Ravens

  • Cardinals-Ravens Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 ET on FOX
  • Cardinals-Ravens Point Spread: Ravens -13
  • Cardinals-Ravens Over-Under Odds: 43
  • Cardinals-Ravens Spread Pick: Wow, after the egg Baltimore laid on Monday night I cannot believe that they are 13 point favorites. Except that, since they are at home, yes I can. And an angry Baltimore team at home is a dangerous Baltimore team, especially against a defense that seems tailor-made for Joe Flacco and the offense to bounce back against. I have little hope that this game is even competitive, because the Ravens are outstanding when focused. They’ll be focused. Ravens-Cardinals free spread pick: Ravens -13 | Ravens-Cardinals prediction straight up: Ravens

Detroit Lions at Denver Broncos

  • Lions-Broncos Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 4:05 ET on FOX
  • Lions-Broncos Point Spread: Lions -3
  • Lions-Broncos Over-Under Odds: 43
  • Lions-Broncos Spread Pick: The Broncos will be the popular pick in this one for myriad reasons, but I’ll urge you not to drink the Kool-Aid, either on Tim Tebow or the impending demise of Detroit. No, this is not a 12- or 13-win team, but it’s a good team, and it’s a team that is undefeated on the road this year and that matchups up perfectly against Denver (who, remember, will be without Willis McGahee). For all of his good qualities, Tebow remains indecisive and inaccurate in the pocket. Against the likes of Suh, Avril, and Co., that is not going to bode well, and I just don’t see how Denver generates much offense in this one. Lions-Broncos free spread pick: Lions -3 | Lions-Broncos prediction straight up: Lions

Washington Redskins at Buffalo Bills

  • Redskins-Bills Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 4:05 ET on FOX
  • Redskins-Bills Point Spread: Bills -6
  • Redskins-Bills Over-Under Odds: 45.5
  • Redskins-Bills Spread Pick: Remember when the Redskins were on top of the world and everyone was sure this would be the year they’d contend for the NFC East crown again? Just a few weeks later they look like the worst team in the division and have already made a QB switch. Still, even with Tim Hightower and Santana Moss out, I think the ‘Skins defense is good enough to give the inconsistent Ryan Fitzpatrick some trouble, and 6 points is still a lot to entrust to a Bills team that seems to always be playing close games. Redskins-Bills free spread pick: Redskins +6 | Redskins-Bills prediction straight up: Bills

New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Patriots-Steelers Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 4:15 ET on CBS
  • Patriots-Steelers Point Spread: Patriots -3
  • Patriots-Steelers Over-Under Odds: 50.5
  • Patriots-Steelers Spread Pick: Wow. New England is laying three points at Pittsburgh, when all New England does is throw and no one has shut down opposing passing games, at least in terms of yards, like the Steelers have this year. Plus, Pittsburgh has been improving and New England hasn’t seemed nearly as dominant lately, and we’ve seen teams not be at their best coming off the bye. New England very well might win this game – mainly because Pittsburgh can’t put the same pressure on the QB it once could, a necessity for stop the Patriots – but it’ll be very tight…if they even win at all. Patriots-Steelers free spread pick: Steelers +3 | Patriots-Steelers prediction straight up: Steelers

Cleveland Browns at San Francisco 49ers

  • Browns-49ers Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 4:15 ET on CBS
  • Browns-49ers Point Spread: 49ers -9
  • Browns-49ers Over-Under Odds: 38.5
  • Browns-49ers Spread Pick: San Francisco is going to win this game. Let’s just agree on that right now. San Fran’s defense is absolutely dominant and Cleveland’s offense is among the worst in football. The question is, can the up and down 49ers’ offense score enough on the up and down Browns defense to cover a 9-point spread? We’ve seen teams struggle out of the bye week this year, and Braylon Edwards will be back, which could take a little getting used to for everyone. Color me a little skeptical that the 49ers hit on all cylinders on offense in this game, which will give the Brownies a chance to hang around. Browns-49ers free spread pick: Browns +9 | Browns-49ers prediction straight up: 49ers

Cincinnati Bengals at Seattle Seahawks

  • Bengals-Seahawks Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 4:15 ET on CBS
  • Bengals-Seahawks Point Spread: Bengals -3
  • Bengals-Seahawks Over-Under Odds: 38
  • Bengals-Seahawks Spread Pick: I don’t like this game at all. So many warring thoughts going against eachother. I don’t like taking rookie QBs on the road. Plus I don’t like laying points at Seattle. But I never want any part of a team quarterbacked by Charlie Whitehurst either, even though I’m not big on laying points with a team that has to cross multiple time zones. Ugh. Let’s just take the points and move on. Bengals-Seahawks free spread pick: Seahawks +3 | Bengals-Seahawks prediction straight up: Bengals

Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

  • Cowboys-Eagles Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, October 30th at 8:20 ET on NBC
  • Cowboys-Eagles Point Spread: Eagles -3
  • Cowboys-Eagles Over-Under Odds: 50.5
  • Cowboys-Eagles Spread Pick: I’m still not quite sure what either of these teams is. Dallas looked pretty good against New England, and they demolished St. Louis last week like they were supposed to, but doesn’t this mean that we’re ripe for another Romo meltdown? And if so, can the Eagles not turn the ball over long enough to take advantage? As you know, in moments of such uncertainty, I usually just take the points and take my chances. I’ll do it again here. Cowboys-Eagles free spread pick: Cowboys +3 | Cowboys-Eagles prediction straight up: Eagles

San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs

  • Chargers-Chiefs Date, Time, and TV: Monday, October 31st at 8:30 ET on ESPN
  • Chargers-Chiefs Point Spread: Chargers -3.5
  • Chargers-Chiefs Over-Under Odds: 44
  • Chargers-Chiefs Spread Pick: I don’t what the hell is wrong with Philip Rivers, but on behalf of all of his fantasy owners I’d like to request that the real Phil Rivers please stand up, please stand up, please stand up. Luckily for PhilRiv, he has his bestest buddy Antonio Gates back (assuming he’s not hurt again…) which should really help the continuity of the Chargers’ offense, which struggled against a much better defense last week than they’re going to face this week. I still don’t buy the resurgence of the Chiefs, which has come against some pretty crappy teams. San Diego is mercurial, but they’re a good team. They’ll show it Monday night. Chargers-Chiefs free spread pick: Chargers -3.5| Chargers-Chiefs prediction straight up: Chargers
