This Saturday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will try to avenge the “tragic” 31-28 loss they suffered at the hands of the Michigan State Spartans last season.

Michigan State has jumped to an early 2-0 record, defeating both Youngstown State and Florida Atlantic.

The same cannot be said about Notre Dame.

A Defense of the WNBA and a Playoff Preview

The WNBA Playoffs start tonight, and I’ll be watching.

The WNBA recently announced that its attendance is up for the fifth straight season and that TV viewership is up for the third straight. Both numbers are the highest they’ve been since the 2005 season.

While the WNBA remains well behind the five major men’s pro sports leagues (including MLS) in both attendance and TV ratings—and likely always will—it’s nice to see the women’s association headed in the right direction.

I Like the WNBA

I count myself as a fan of the WNBA. I don’t follow the WNBA nearly as closely as I follow the W-less NBA, but I check the standings every couple days and watch a lot of the Tuesday night games on ESPN2; I have the ScoreCenter app set up to give me quarter-by-quarter updates of every Indiana Fever game; and I’m looking forward to this year’s Playoffs.

But there’s a part of me that feels as though I have to justify or rationalize my affinity for the WNBA.

5 Reasons Why the Detroit Tigers are a World Series Contender

Justin Verlander

The Phantastic Phour. The “Greatest Red Sox team ever.” The power-hitting Yankees. The vastly improved Brewers. Throughout the 2011 MLB season, there’s been no shortage of sexy picks to win the World Series.

One team rarely mentioned in the discussion: The Detroit Tigers.

Because they aren’t as flashy as the other top teams, they haven’t received the same fanfare. Only now, when they’ve won 11 straight games, are they starting to get our attention. A closer look, however, suggests we should’ve been heralding the Tigers as a World Series sleeper for a while now.

Here are five reasons why the Detroit Tigers just might win it all this year.

MSF Commercial Grade: Uggs’ Tom Brady Commercial

I write a blog, Commercial Grade, in which I review television commercials in what is intended to be a funny and sarcastic (and potty-mouthed, I must admit) manner and assign letter grades based on how much I enjoyed each ad.

Since sporting events, and the NFL in particular, feature so many commercials that run repeatedly throughout their seasons, I decided to do a weekly MSF Commercial Grade post on a commercial you have probably seen while watching NFL games.

As I’m sure you know by now, nude photos of Scarlet Johansoon leaked onto the Internet recently. Since we are a family sports site, I won’t link to them here, but I will present to you the most unintentionally hilarious headline that references the pics (with a hat tip to Reddit):

The Non-BCS Watch List rolls on, with our next stop coming in the Metro Atlantic.  As odd as it may seem, a team that won 25 games and will be breaking in a new coach may actually be better this season.  In fact, some have already labeled them a sleeper Final Four team.

This just in: Skip Bayless is still a dick

I like Chris Bosh.

I know that he isn’t necessarily the toughest player in the NBA, and I don’t particularly root for he and he is team, and in the interest of full disclosure I did once post this, but I think the Chris Bosh hate has gone way overboard since he joined the Miami Heat.

And offender #1 has been, unsurprisingly, Skip “Dick” Bayless, who proved his dickishness yet again today on ESPN’s 1st Take.

KVB just tweeted this video out, and I’m glad he did. It’s the video of former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel “raising the ante” and guaranteeing that his New York Giants (then 7-4) would make the playoffs.

Of course, they did, making it all the way to the Super Bowl.

The point of emphasis of this column is to go somewhat outside the box in regards in waiver wire pick-ups and beyond the usual recommendations. Another objective is to indicate whether certain players are worth a substantial bid in FAAB formats. As always, all feedback is very welcome in the comments forum.
