ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian ignores Philadelphia Phillies’ offensive weaknesses?

During my long ride back from KC last night, ESPN radio had Tim Kurkjian on discussing the upcoming playoffs.

In my view, Tim’s one of the few bright minds left at ESPN, so I was disappointed in his response when they asked him the cliché “Can anyone beat the Phillies” question, and he basically gave the cliché answer of “I don’t think so.”

Fantasy Football: Final Preseason Rankings for 2011

peyton-manning

Here are my updated fantasy football ratings for 2011.  Assuming you are in a 10-14 team league, and you must start 2 RBs, 2 WRs, and at least 1 flex position, you need to know exactly who is valuable and how their value stacks up in relation to everyone else.

The top ten is always easy.  After that, it gets a little messy.

dayan-viciedo1

So it’s officially September. That means our favorite month of the year, October, is on its way and will be here soon.

Unlike any other sport, baseball is the one where failing 7 out of 10 times can make you a Hall of Fame caliber player.  This is why it is so important to recognize who’s hot, who’s not, and catch guys when it benefits you the most.  And as always, that’s what we are going to point out to you in this week’s hitting planner.

Fantasy Football Draft Strategy Advice: Breaking the Foundation – Why You May Want to Wait to Draft Your RBs

[Editor's note: Attention all fantasy football players...FanDuel is hosting a Week 1 Freeroll challenge for MSF readers. Buyin is $0 and the prizepool is $250. Click here for more information or here to signup!]

Over many years of playing fantasy football, I have realized a few things:

  1. Leagues are won by the individuals who pay attention and make sound roster moves.
  2. The best drafters find value and win in the middle rounds.
  3. I am never lucky enough to have a high round draft pick. The highest pick I’ve had in the past three years is 5th, and that was in an eight team league. Outside of that, the highest I have had is ninth.

And I’m okay with these things. In fact, if I can’t get one of the top three guys most years, I would prefer to have the backend of the draft and bookend my picks. This does a few things: it makes my decision a little easier by allowing me to grab two guys I want, and it allows me to see how the draft is unfolding and know when I need to start jumping on players I want.

This year you have AP, Foster, Jamaal Charles, CJ2K and Ray Rice as the guys I look at as super elite running backs. In PPR formats, I would put McCoy there as well. If you aren’t going to get one of those guys, what do you do?

First off, you have to have a plan and know your players.

All 32 Week One NFL Starting QBs…as Michael Jackson Songs

When Super Bowl XLVI arrives in Indianapolis come February 2012, it will be 19 years since one of the most iconic moments in the history of America’s most popular sporting event: Michael Jackson’s epic 1993 halftime show.

Unfortunately, the eternal King of Pop is no longer with us (he would have turned 53 just a few days ago on August 29th), and he thus he will never be able to follow in the footsteps of Bruce Springsteen, The Who, John Mellencamp, and others who have taken to the Super Bowl stage as older musicians, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t weave the musical brilliance of Michael Jackson into a post about the National Football League.

So enjoy this homage to my favorite musician of all time, Michael Jackson, as we kick off our coverage of the 2011 NFL season. Here are all 32 Week One starting QBs in the NFL…as Michael Jackson songs.

A timeline of events that caused the Big 12 to fall apart

Big-12-breaking-up

On Wednesday, Texas A&M made it official that they intend to leave the Big 12 and join another conference. This decision to follow in the footsteps of Nebraska and Colorado just might be the move that ends the Big 12 conference once and for all. (Though not all agree.)

The Big 12 has stated that it wants to expand, but it remains unclear which teams they are going to pursue.  In a little over 16 months this once proud conference has lost its elite status and now has become a giant mess struggling to hang on.

Here is a timeline of events that caused the Big 12 conference to be in its current state of possible dissolution. [Read more...]

Why the Big XII Conference Will Survive

mack-brown-bob-stoops

Since Texas A&M announced its intention to leave the Big XII Conference, the conventional wisdom is that the conference will not survive much longer.

(For a complete timeline of the events that led to the Big XII’s current state, click here.)

Colorado and Nebraska left last year; and rumors that the SEC will go after Missouri or that the Oklahoma schools will bolt for the Pac 12/14 never seem to go away. Both the Big Ten and Pac 12 have long coveted Texas, and the Big East has suggested that it would welcome the four schools from the former Big XII North.

But is the Big XII really as doomed as everyone seems to think it is?
