Football is finally back, and there aren’t many matchups better than Thursday’s game between Green Bay and New Orleans.

The Saints will open up the season on Thursday night for the second consecutive year, having won last year’s 2010 NFC Championship game rematch over the Vikings in a low-scoring 14-9 affair.

This season’s matchup pits the past two Super Bowl champions against each other, and with the Vegas over/under set at 47 (all NFL Week 1 spreads and over-unders here), this figures to be a much higher-scoring game than the 2010 season opener.

How many sports fans knew there were two U.S. Opens going on last week?

The tennis one is the obvious one, the Soccer championship is the lesser likely of the two to have been acknowledged. Mainstream media only covered the tennis, yet the semi-finals in Soccer took place and will now see the Chicago Fire taking on the Seattle Sounders October 4th in Seattle for this year’s U.S. Soccer Open title.

Week 1 is over and, once again, we found out that Notre Dame was too highly ranked at the beginning of the season. Also: TCU was shocked by Baylor, Ball State somehow beat a Big Ten team, Boise State’s offense is still dominate, and Oregon’s offense might not be invincible after all.

Week 2 brings us more exciting college football action, and here at MSF we’re making sure you don’t miss any of the games you want to see.

Here are some of the marquee games to look at this week, then the entire college football TV schedule for week 2.

Must-read 1995 SI piece on the break-up of the Southwest Conference

Email Post Email Post

Amid speculation that the demise of the Big XII is imminent (though I’m still not convinced that will happen), it is instructive to look back on the last time a major conference fell apart. So do yourself a favor today and read this 1995 Sports Illustrated obituary of the Southwest Conference.

Excerpt:

Let’s Bury the old dear without getting maudlin. Date the obituary for the end of the 1995 college football season, football being the Southwest Conference’s raison d’être and the only thing anyone will remember about it—except that at least one of its member schools was usually on probation and the majority of its players free on bond. Those of us who paid attention see now that the conference was a goner that night in December 1976 when both Darrell Royal, coach of the University of Texas, and Frank Broyles, his good friend and counterpart at the University of Arkansas, submitted their resignations before facing off for the final time.

Why Is Ohio State a Bigger Deal Than Ohio U.?

Email Post Email Post
Rufus the Bobcat is still angry about the Eagleson Bill. (Read on.) AP Photo/OhioFootBall.com, Dan Poel

There was a time during my childhood in Indiana when I had no idea that there was such a thing as Indiana State. I suspected there might be, because I knew there was a Michigan State and a North Carolina State and an Oklahoma State. But I didn’t learn about Indiana State University until I learned Larry Bird’s back story.

Indiana State is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, which is also home to Illinois State and Missouri State. While all three of these “States” are fine schools, when it comes to athletics and research, they are a step below Indiana University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Missouri.

This sort of thing isn’t unusual. In many states, the school named for the state is the flagship institution in the state university system, while [name of state] State and [name of state] Tech are a tier below. Perhaps they have fewer graduate programs or a smaller undergraduate enrollment or don’t field a Division I-FBS football team.

There are plenty of states where this isn’t the case. Schools such as Michigan State, Iowa State, and Georgia Tech hold their own—athletically and academically—against Michigan, Iowa, and Georgia. (If Iowa State doesn’t win the Cy-Hawk Trophy this weekend, I might remove them from this list.)

Both of these scenarios are common. (Arkansas is a bigger deal than Arkansas State, but Kansas and Kansas State are more or less on the same level, and so on.) Far less common are situations in which [name of state] State University is a bigger deal than [name of state] University or the University of [name of state].
