Fantasy Baseball Hitting Planner for Week of August 15th, 2011

In four our of the six division races this year, 4 games or fewer separates second place from first. What exactly does this mean? Managers, especially those on contending teams, are going to be trying to keep the scores as low as possible with multiple pitching changes at the very moment any starter looks like he might be wavering.

With that, we can expect numbers to dip a little, especially from young hitters dealing with their first stretch run. This is where the more clutch/timely hitters will prosper.

Forget Suspension; Cubs Should Cut Ties with Carlos Zambrano

In what shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows anything about sports, Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano threw another one of his tantrums Friday night. After allowing five home runs to the Atlanta Braves and being ejected for throwing two inside pitches at Chipper Jones, Zambrano did what he does best: storm off the field in disgust.

Zambrano apparently told club staff that he was retiring after the ejection. Sadly, two hours later, Zambrano’s agent made it clear that his client was not going to retire; instead, the Cubs put Zambrano on the disqualified list for 30 days.

Cubs general manager, Jim Hendry, said that it was the harshest punishment without actually releasing Zambrano. My question is: Why didn’t Hendry release Zambrano?

MSF QuickCast #8: As Carlos Zambrano Exits, Ol’ Reliable Mark Buehrle Stands Alone in Chicago

Mark Buehrle

In the 8th installment of the MSF QuickCast, I discuss last night’s classless exit and apparent retirement of Carlos Zambrano, which effectively ends a frustrating decade on the mound for Cubs fans that began so promisingly.

In Zambrano’s exit, and juxtaposed against the disappointment of the Wood-Prior-Zambrano trio, I find yet another way to appreciate their underappreciated contemporary: Mark Buehrle.

[Editor's note: I originally posted this on July 27th, 2010, but since it's a slow afternoon and everyone's appetite is now whet for football, it seemed at least mildly appropriate.]

I’m going to make this post like a Christopher Nolan movie. So allow me to answer a question before I’ve even asked it:

I’m 29 years old.

Now that we have that out of way, I want to share with you a video and descriptive phrase I just saw over at Pro Football Talk that made me laugh out loud. Yes, I give literal meaning to “LOL”.

I share with you in hopes that it inspires a similar reaction:

The 12 Best Players Ever Selected in the Supplemental Draft

Email Post Email Post
The Boz (Seattle Weekly)

The NFL will be holding its 2011 Supplemental Draft next Wednesday. This year’s Supplemental Draft is notable because Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor may or may not be eligible. (As of this writing, he is not.) Even if the NFL doesn’t clear Pryor, a team might take a chance on Georgia running back Caleb King (“might” being the operative word), who is academically ineligible to play in Athens in 2011.

Unlike the regular draft, where teams pick a player whenever their turn comes up, teams in the Supplemental Draft bid on players using their draft picks for the following season. For example, say the Cleveland Browns decide that Terrelle Pryor would make a nice back-up to Colt McCoy and bid their third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Then, say that the Cincinnati Bengals decide to out-Ohio their division rivals and bid a second-round pick on Pryor. The Bengals would get Pryor and lose their second-round pick in the 2012 draft. The Browns would move on as if nothing had happened.

At the moment, Terrelle Pryor isn't eligible for much of anything. (Wikipedia)

The NFL established the Supplemental Draft in 1977 for the benefit of players who, for one reason or another, didn’t register for the regular draft. Once upon a time, players could only enter the NFL Draft if they had graduated from college or had exhausted their college eligibility. Several players who graduated early, but not in time to register for the regular draft, entered the Supplemental Draft. Nowadays most players who enter the Supplemental Draft have been declared ineligible for their senior seasons, usually for academic or behavioral issues.

Since its inception in 1977, 40 players have been taken in the Supplemental Draft. Only a handful have made meaningful contributions to NFL franchises. The 40 Supplemental Draft selections have 16 Pro Bowl appearances between them. Cris Carter is responsible for half of those.

Here are the 12 best players ever taken in the Supplemental Draft.

In Jurgen Klinsmann, USMNT finally has a much-needed star

Do you know why Cleveland was so excited when they got LeBron James in 2003? It was because for the first time, really since Jim Brown, the city got to cheer for a legitimate superstar.

Over the years, Cleveland fans had been cursed with three types of teams: teams that were simply awful; teams that showcased good but not great players like Brad Daugherty, Gerald Wilkins, Bernie Kosar, Brian Sipe, Sandy Alomar, Jr., and Kenny Lofton; or teams that did have great players, but they weren’t guys that really resonated with the rest of the country…guys like Ozzie Newsome, Paul Warfield, Leroy Kelly, Joe DeLamielleure, Mark Price, Roberto Alomar, Young Manny Ramirez, and Jim Thome.

LeBron changed all of that.

For the first time since the days of Jim Brown, Otto Graham, and Bob Feller, Cleveland had one of THE guys. And when you get one of THE guys, you get excited.

That’s why, right now, soccer fans in America should be excited about the new American Skipper, Jurgen Klinsmann.

[Note: This post written and brought to you by DirectStarTv.]

These days, it feels like the news is full of disputes. The NFL locked out months ago, the NBA locked out recently; the government toiled over the debt ceiling debate for an agonizingly long period of time; and the only consistency in the stock market is its volatility. Whether you follow sports, politics, the economy, or all three, you have likely become frustrated by the confusing and disagreeable nature of so much recent news.

Thankfully, a couple of weeks ago, we finally got something to celebrate, as the NFL players and owners reached an agreement ending the lockout! Much to many people’s surprise, the NFL season will begin on time and continue as usual.

Getting Tiger Out Of The Rough

Email Post Email Post
TigerWoods Look Up

Even the most genuinely talented human beings have flaws.  We look at the most gifted performers in our culture as heroes and role models, but we forgive their personal shortcomings as long as they remain successful in the arenas in which they have become known to the world.

Often we ignore the possibility that it could be because of – not in spite of – these flaws that these people are able to claim their spots on the highest of pedestals in the first place.  Addiction is strange; it can destroy, but it can also impart an unshakable confidence in its victim.

As you probably know, Tiger Woods last won a major championship over three years ago.  Since that time, personally and professionally, his life has gone through total upheaval.  He was forced to undergo reconstructive knee surgery after that thrilling 2008 U.S. Open win, returned 8 months later and played fairly well, but left golf again in November 2009 after a history of being unfaithful to his wife became public.

Since then, Tiger has lost several endorsements, parted with his swing coach, Hank Haney, and his caddy of 12 years, Steve Williams.  Clearly, Tiger Woods has not been Tiger Woods, brand name and PGA winning machine, for the better part of the last three years.

Video: Remembering the final moments of Reggie Miller’s career – one of the classiest (and most ironic) send-offs ever

reggie-miller

As I am wont to do, I took a quick peek today at the Reddit sports page while consuming my usual lunch of water and a Healthy Choice frozen meal (pro tip: they’re tastier than you might expect). I saw a title that said “One of the classiest send-offs of all-time” and felt compelled to click.

Said click led me to a YouTube video of Reggie Miller’s final game as an Indiana Pacer. The year was 2005 and the occasion was the East Conference semifinals against the Detroit Pistons — yes, the very same Pistons that the Pacers had their infamous brawl with the year before.

And after watching the video I had two thoughts: 1) this was indeed one of the classiest send-offs of all-time; and 2) there was a great amount of irony in Miller’s final seconds going as these did.

More on #2 in a second. First, enjoy the video:

Big Ten Bowl Game Projections for 2011

Email Post Email Post
Rose-Bowl

With the college football season rapidly approaching, now is the time of year when everyone makes their attempt to try to predict the outcome of the season.

Trying to forecast how each team will finish in the Big Ten is almost impossible because each season there is a surprise team that does better than anyone could predict.  In 2009, it was the Iowa Hawkeyes that shocked everyone by winning 11 games, and last season it was the Michigan State Spartans who were the surprise team and won 11 games.

College Gridiron 365 made their attempt to predict what will happen in 2011 by releasing bowl projections and outcomes based on a simulated 2011 season for every team in college football. Based on a 2011 simulation here, are the projections, bowl game scores, and where each team in the Big Ten will end up ranked. [Read more...]

Why are English rioters using baseball bats instead of cricket bats?

Email Post Email Post

Following the recent surge in baseball bat sales at Amazon UK, Brian Palmer at Slate takes a look at the “history of mob violence and sporting goods” and asks why the British have chosen baseball bats, rather than cricket bats, as weapons for self-defense and/or looting.

“Why Are They Using Baseball Bats Instead of Cricket Bats in the U.K. Riots?”—Slate

Excerpt:

Why would Brits choose baseball bats over cricket bats?

Movies, possibly. Many people in the U.K. seem to associate baseball bats with violence, perhaps on account of the long association between the two in American films (like The Warriors), television shows (like The Sopranos), and video games (like Grand Theft Auto). The idea of baseball-related combat has become so common in England that theater companies regularly call BaseballSoftballUK, the country’s development agency for the two sports, seeking bats for staged beatings. In addition, one of the organization’s female members was once singled out on a bus by a police officer who demanded that she produce a softball to prove that she wasn’t carrying her bat as a weapon. There may be some logic to preferring a baseball bat for self-defense. Aluminum baseball bats are typically around 40 percent lighter than cricket bats, and are therefore easier to wield.

The White Sox seemingly got back into the AL Central race, only to lose a week’s worth of games to drop back out of the race, only to then sweep the Twins to seemingly get back in the race. The Phillies continued their assault towards 110 wins. The Red Sox assumed control of the Yankees and the AL East. And…much, much, much more.

In addition, we recorded another thrilling episode of the Internet’s most popular baseball trivia podcast

Ravens have interest in Evans

Update: The Baltimore Sun suspects that the Ravens would only consider adding Bills wideout Lee Evans if he were released.  We don't care what the Baltimore Sun is reporting, there is no way Evans ends up in Baltimore.  The team does not think he is that big of an upgrade from what they currently have.
