What Is “Midwest,” Anyway?

Purple states belong to the "Great Lakes" sub-region. Orange States belong to the "Great Plains" sub-region.

Unless you like to read bloggers who have no regard for intellectual property rights, you’re reading this article on a website called Midwest Sports Fans. While not all who contribute to MSF currently live in the Midwestern United States, we all have ties to the Midwest and maintain allegiances to college and pro sports teams in the region. These Midwestern sympathies set MSF apart from sports websites whose writers identify with the coasts or the south.

But what does “Midwest” mean?

I had assumed that, for most Americans, “Midwest” meant the Great Lakes, the Rust Belt, the Big Ten, corn, and the American League Central. But after spending much of last week in Sacramento, I’m not so sure.

Retweeted by the great Gordon Keith (people who live in Dallas are nodding in agreement) comes the picture below from twitterer @leftgluegone, which was apparently taken in Telluride of the attendant working at gondola station.

Hmm…I wonder why this picture would be of interest to folks in Dallas…

Earlier this summer NCAA President Mark Emmert stated that he would be organizing a meeting for August 9-10 to discuss issues in college sports with 50 university presidents and chancellors.

Mark Emmert became the president of the NCAA on April 27, 2010 and since taking over, college athletics drastically changed in a short period of time.  Already conferences all over the college landscape have changed and there has been more scandal than ever seen before.

If there has ever been a time to discuss the state of college athletics, this would be it, to get every institution on the same page. [Read more...]

Beanie to start in Arizona

Email Post Email Post

Update: Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt indicated that running back Beanie Wells is the clear starter in the Cardinals backfield following the Tim Hightower trade. "To say this is a make or break season is a little premature," said Whiz. "But this is what he wanted. Clearly he's the guy." Wells will need to stay healthy to keep the job, but it is clearly his gig to lose.

Update: According to ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky, the Titans coaching staff thought Randy Moss was "done" as an NFL-caliber receiver late last season. I love song parodies, and the Internet is replete with them. Some are good, some are not so good. The one in the video below, I think, is quite good. And timely. And absolutely spot-on correct about the moribund Cincinnati Bengals and their now-retired QB Carson Palmer.

Via today’s Hot Clicks (Jimmy Traina was on fire today…this is the second video I’ve re-posted – first here – after seeing it at HC), here is “Retired in California” by Ryan Parker:

The word “epic” gets thrown around way too much on the Interwebs. This, however, is an absolutely epic fail by a TV reporter.

[Note: video contains language that isn't bad in the context of how it's meant; but since we all have gutter minds, the language will sound bad. Thus, be careful viewing at work or around prudes.]

Cardinals need to be angry birds in Milwaukee

Over the next 38 days, the National League Central Division will go a long ways toward being decided. During that time-frame, the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will each play 35 games…including 12 against each other, beginning Monday night at Miller Park. By the time the team have their 18th and final head-to-head matchup on September 7, there will be a mere three weeks remaining in the regular season.

And based upon events of the last week, the Cardinals better make sure they are still within striking distance.

In the 5th MSF QuickCast, I explain the origins of Brother’s Day, an August 1st tradition of the Morris family, and why it is silly that there isn’t a national day set aside to appreciate siblings.
