Massaquoi is hurt

Email Post Email Post

Update: Browns head coach Pat Shurmur revealed Monday that wideout Mohamed Massaquoi has a "bone issue" in his injured left ankle, and "no one is sure when it happened."  It is believed that he reported to camp with the condition.  This is a big blow to the down field threat that Colt McCoy was hoping to have.

In the seventh installment of the MSF QuickCast, I discuss the frequent misuse of the word “humbled” during the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speeches on Saturday night and why it’s so important for all of us to take pride in preserving the unique meanings of individual words.

The Milwaukee Brewers have arrived

Greinke Marcum

Coming off a sweep of the Houston AAAstros (see what I did there?), the Milwaukee Brewers have won four straight and 11 of 12, with the lone loss coming at the end of a classic against the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings. In that stretch, Milwaukee has beaten Houston six times, the Chicago Cubs three times, and the Cardinals twice.

It’s no surprise that the Brewers have been able to beat up on the bottom feeders of the National League. What surprised me was the text I received from my mother, the most bandwagon of fans I know, after the game Sunday afternoon.

“On to St. Louis! How is Weeks doing? Can we beat the Cards on the road?”

Greg LeMond will be on this week’s Phineas & Ferb

Miguel Indurain never got to be on Phineas & Ferb

Anyone who has small children and basic cable knows that Phineas & Ferb is one of the best shows on television and one of the top 5 children’s cartoons of all time. This week’s episode, “Tour de Ferb,” features 3-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond. Is Disney afraid to touch Lance Armstrong? I don’t know, but it’s good to see Greg LeMond get his due.

Here’s a picture of LeMond with Baljeet:

Fantasy Baseball Weekly Stock Market Report: Uggla, Butler UP; Lind, Espinosa DOWN

Stock Up

Dan Uggla – 2B – ATL

Dan is in the midst of  28-game hitting streak.  Over the past 15 games he was 22-59 (.373) with 6 home runs, 15 RBI’s while raising his average to .220 on the year.  On the year he is up to 24 home runs and 55 RBI’s.  Thirty-five home runs is not out of sight along with 80 RBI’s.  Solid production for a middle infielder.

Jason Kipnis – 2B – CLE

After a slow start since being recalled, Jason has taken flight with 5 home runs, 7 RBI’s, and a stolen base over the past week.  Heading into the Sunday night game, Kipnis has a 7-game hitting streak going.  Look for his production to continue but not that type of power week to week.

Billy Butler – 1B/DH – KC

Billy has cooled off over the past week but still managed to go 19-59 (.322) with 6 home runs, 19 RBI’s over the past 15 days.  Look for Billy to cool off for most of August while still being productive in the power department.

Stock Down

Adam Lind – DH/1B – TOR

Adam has been so streaky lately.  Over the past 15 days, Lind is 8-49 (.163) with 1 home run and 5 RBI’s.  It’s tough to know which Adam Lind you will get week to week.  It’s difficult to start that type of inconsistency in weekly leagues but feel free to deploy him in daily leagues.

Danny Espinosa – 2B – WAS

Over the past 15 days, Danny is 9-56 (.161) with no home runs, no RBI’s 5 BB’s, and 15 strikeouts.  His average has dropped down to .228 but will most likely finish the year with .240 average.  Look for Espinosa to rebound within the next couple of weeks.  Don’t forget he’s got 17 home runs and 12 stolen bases on the year so far.

Eric Thames – OF/DH – TOR

Eric was 1-21 (.048) over the past week with 10 strikeouts and 8-47 (.170) over the past 15 days.  Since the arrival of Colby Rasmus, Eric’s production has gone sour.  Don’t expect too much out of Thames as he’ll be spliting time with Rajai Davis now too.

Ellis signs with Pats

Update: ESPN is reporting that the Patriots agreed to terms with DE Shaun Ellis, formerly of the Jets.  This is a nice signing by the Pats, as Ellis will improve their defensive line, and provide some much needed depth.

McNabb believes in Harvin

Email Post Email Post

Update: Donovan McNabb believes there's "no reason" why Percy Harvin can't be a perennial Pro Bowler with 90-100 catches and over 1,000 yards. "I have played with guys that play big, but are short in stature and have been so successful," McNabb said. If Harvin can stay healthy, he should be in for a big season.

Peterson to see more touches

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Vikings reportedly plan to hand Adrian Peterson a "much bigger role" in the downfield passing game this season.  New Vikings QB Donovan McNabb is a guy who likes to toss the ball to his backs out of the backfield, so look for the Vikings to incorporate this into their offense to play up to McNabb's strength.

Fantasy Baseball Hitting Planner for Week of August 8th, 2011

Email Post Email Post

In a modest week of hitting there hasn’t seemed to be much excitement around the MLB this week; but there is only a 1/3 of the season left, which means some players will be stepping their game up and others may start packing it in looking forward to the offseason. And though I don’t want to dwell on the negatives, some rookies may hit the “rookie wall” fairly soon as well.

But on the bright side we have some hidden gems in this week’s hitting planner!

Mason heads to NY

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that the Jets have signed WR Derrick Mason, formerly of the Ravens.  This is a bit of a shock as it was believed the Ravens were offering more money, but perhaps Mason believes the Jets have a better shot at the Super Bowl, having been to the AFC title game the past two years.

Favre not interested in Miami

Update: Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald tracked down Brett Favre in Hattiesburg (MS) on Friday, and Favre confirmed to Darlington that he's not coming back to the NFL. "I haven't heard anything, and I don't have any interest," Favre told Darlington.  There will certainly be more Favre rumors, so stay tuned.
