Tate may get cut from Pats

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss is reporting that Brandon Tate is unlikely to make the Patriots' 53-man roster. With Wes Welker, Chad Ochocinco, Deion Branch, Julian Edelman, Taylor Price, and Matthew Slater, in the mix, Tate is on the outside looking in.  Especially since his fail takes a hit with the new kick off rules changing.

Former Skin Kelly may retire

Update: Released by the Redskins on Tuesday, free agent WR Malcolm Kelly indicated that he may consider retirement. "As much as I love this thing, I’m not going to go out here and kill myself," Kelly said. "It’s one thing to have one injury, man, but to have as many as I’ve had, it’s to the point where it is what it is."

Titans continue talks with Johnson

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Nashville Tennessean reports that contract talks between the Titans and Chris Johnson have "picked up," and there is "reason to be optimistic" a deal will be worked out before Week 1. Expect a deal to get done before Week 1, as it is apparent the Titans need Johnson in their backfield.

Cruz outplaying Hixon

Update: Wideout Victor Cruz has worked as the Giants' primary slot receiver for their last two preseason games.  He has not been great, as he and Eli Manning look out of sync a number of times, but he does in fact appear to have the inside track ahead of Domenik Hixon

Hey Chris Johnson, you STFU

You will never, ever hear me criticize an athlete for maximizing their earning potential. Never. I might criticize them after the fact if they sign a big contract and don’t produce, but I’ll never begrudge someone their right and their ability to play for the highest bidder.

As far as Chris Johnson’s case is concerned, I do not have a problem with him holding out for a new contract. I don’t particularly like it, but it’s the way business operates in the Machiavellian world of NFL football; and Johnson plays running back, the position with the most risk and least security of any other. Running backs have to use their leverage the few times they have it. Johnson has it, he’s using it. Fine.

With all of that said, after reading this tweet by Johnson, screencapped below, I’d like to echo his sentiments but boomerang them right back at him. you shut the fuck up Chris.

Pitchers v Position Players: Who Has a Greater Impact on a Season?

Email Post Email Post
Justin Verlander

If you haven’t listened to Pat Suley’s outstanding QuickCast about why the American League MVP race should be a two-man contest between the Blue Jays’ José Bautista and the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, do that now. I’ll wait.

To make the case that Verlander is one of only two players deserving of the AL MVP, Pat enters the debate that arises whenever a pitcher arises as a legitimate MVP candidate: is a starting pitcher, who only plays every fifth game, as valuable to his team as a position player who plays every day?

Fantasy Football Defense/Special Teams Rankings for 2011: The Big Four and One Wild Card to Keep An Eye On

Whether you play full-season fantasy football or the fun, free weekly games that we participate in at FanDuel, when it comes to picking a defense for your fantasy football team this season, just remember one thing: FOUR, NO MORE.

Reach way back into your memory and try and recall something you learned in Economics class: The Law of Opportunity Costs.

The law of opportunity costs states that, “Whenever you spend money on one thing, you are choosing against spending money on something else.”  While it may be an incredibly simple concept, many of us often get seduced on draft day into spending way too much on a defense.

The fact is that if you don’t get one of the top four defenses in the league, #5 isn’t better enough than #12 to justify spending the additional money.

Fickell Decision to Start Senior Joe Bauserman over Freshman Braxton Miller the Wrong One for Buckeyes

Email Post Email Post
Luke Fickell Ohio State

Ohio State Buckeyes football coach Luke Fickell has named fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman, not freshman dual-threat phenom Braxton Miller, starting quarterback for the season opener against Akron.

While I understand – and will outline – the reasons Fickell has made this decision, I don’t agree with it.

Is this the most ridiculous sports magazine cover ever?

For some reason my Internet journey today, which often takes me to strange and unexpected places, led to me doing a Google Image search of current Monday Night Football analyst and former NFL head coach Jon Gruden.

Predictably, the first several pages of results were filled with images of Gruden looking angry and being compared in side-by-side pictures with everyone’s favorite lovable children’s doll Chucky.

A picture of Tony Kornheiser dressed up as a pilgrim also popped up inexplicably on Page 2, which made me chuckle, but even that was not enough to make me stop scrolling. It’s Google Images…you get used to a completely unrelated pic popping up here or there.

This image, however, did cause me to stop scrolling faster than Jon Gruden can call someone “This guy.”

Five Reasons the Green Bay Packers Will Not Repeat

As a Vikings fan I do not like seeing the Packers do well, so obviously I was not a fan of them winning the Super Bowl last year. I definitely do not want to see it happen again.

Unfortunately for me, the Packers look like they could be even better this year and have a legitimate shot at a repeat.

Fortunately for me, I’ve found five reasons why they won’t.

Video: Matt Millen made the most Matt Millen comment ever

The Detroit Lions are getting a lot of love this preseason (even from me) and with good reason. Since the 0-16 debacle, the franchise has steadily improved to the point of seeming to be on the cusp of playoff-readiness if they can just get a healthy season out of their franchise quarterback.

Before the Autumn of Lions Love truly gets rolling though, let’s get a quick reminder of why the franchise fell to such horrific depths in the first place.

Two names, one incompetent NFL executive: Matt. Millen.

The Bottoms Line Non-BCS Watch List: Belmont Bruins

After hitting the six major conferences, it’s time to give some other talented teams their due.

I’m not a huge fan of the “mid-major” label, so I typically refer to these as “non-BCS teams” (although the BCS has negative connotations of its own).  At any rate, I’m looking only at teams from outside the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC.  What you call those teams is up to you.

I’ve compiled a list of 25 teams to watch this season and will be plowing through them over the coming weeks.  I’ll be hitting them in alphabetical order and will create a post to index all of them as I go.  Keep in mind these aren’t necessarily the Top 25 non-BCS teams, but 25 squads I’ll be keeping an eye on this season.

That said, I expect many of them to be very good, starting with…

College Football Picks and Point Spreads for Week 1

Email Post Email Post
LSU-Oregon

This weekend is the beginning of the college football season and bets are being placed by people every minute.

The opening weekend in college football is very hard to bet on because you have yet to a see teams play.  Projections are based on past seasons’ success and how many starting players are left over from the prior season.

This week also has many teams that are opening their season with opponents in the FCS, and that make it very hard to place bets since there is not much information on those teams.  That is why I try to stay away from games that have a FBS team vs FCS team, because you just don’t have all the resources to make an educated pick.

Here are my top picks that offer the best opportunity to be profitable this weekend.

College football is finally back my friends!

This year it seems to have snuck up on us. The actual college football season was overshadowed a little bit by the sport’s own off-field scandals, the NFL lockout, as well as most of us enjoying our summer; but, as scheduled, the college football season continues on.

Here are some of the marquee games to look at this week, then the entire college football TV schedule for week 1.
