#BruceFreed: Bruce Feldman suspension (or was it?) lifted by ESPN after impressive groundswell of support and outrage from fellow journalists

By now, most sports fans have at least gotten wind of the suspension (or was it?) of ESPN college football reporter Bruce Feldman and the outraged #FreeBruce movement that immediately ensued.

As first reported on Sports by Brooks on Thursday, Feldman was suspended indefinitely by the Worldwide Leader for his work on the recently released book, Swing Your Sword, by former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

The same report, as well as a subsequent radio interview with Leach, calls out the fact that Feldman sought and received ESPN’s approval before aiding in the compilation of information for Leach’s book.  At no time after the book’s release did Feldman promote it; and while ESPN has offered no formal statement (until about an hour ago), his participation in the book is the apparent cause of this suspension.

Welcome to our newest post series: the MSF QuickCast.

We know you’re busy, we know you’re on the go, and we know that attention spans on the web are short. MSF QuickCasts, quite simply, will be rants and raves about sports (and the occasional non-sports topic) that start and finish in less time than it takes to check your email.

That’s it. Quick, concise, and convenient. Like everything on the web should be.

And I’m leading off with the first QuickCast today. The topic: the MLB All Star Game.

Top 18 Indie Tracks from 2011 (so far)

Much like Jerod did last week, and Tyler earlier this week, I have put together a playlist of music. My list is my favorite indie songs from the first half of 2011.

Unlike Jerod and Tyler, you will probably recognize a few of these bands or songs. Even though they may not be as obscure and under the radar as the bands and songs posted last week, they are still out of the mainstream (at least they are here in North Dakota).

Hogwarts Has Put the Future of British Quidditch in Jeopardy

Gwenog Jones, from Harry Potter Wiki

While Quidditch is a favorite sport of wizards and witches around the world, it is especially beloved in Britain, where the game originated in the Queerditch Marsh more than a millennium ago. Quidditch has a longer and more storied history in the British Isles than in any other country or region on earth. And the magical population in Britain and Ireland remains as obsessed with the sport as ever.

British Quidditch will always have a rich history, but does it have a future?

Beginning Baseball: Analyzing the Twins 2nd Half Schedule–Every Play, Every Game Counts

Email Post Email Post
minnesota twins second half schedule

I don’t even need to say it. The Twins have had a rough start this year. Many key players have spent time on the DL, while others have failed to reach fan expectations.

The Twins finally picked up some wins before the All-Star Game, but what’s next? Are we going to play this back-and-forth game for the rest of the year? Can the Twins even get out of 4th place, let alone contend for AL Central Division Championship and a playoff spot?

Whoa. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Many changes need to be made and games won before we can even consider those kinds of questions. Even I know that.

The All Star game is over, which meant that yesterday was one of the bleakest days on the annual sports calendar: no basketball, no football, no hockey, and for the only Spring and Summer day…no baseball! But the boys of summer are back in action tonight, and you are back in action this morning as Episode #7 of the MLB Trivia Challenge Podcast (sponsored by the buyer ready experts at Generational Equity) is rarin’ and ready to go.

And we’re back with a bang: Gregg Doyel and his perpetually strong opinions make their first appearance on an MSF podcast, and he was well worth the wait (though Bud Selig might not agree…)

Reasons Why…Every American Should Be Following and Rooting for the USA Women’s Soccer Team

Email Post Email Post
hope-solo-abby-wambach

The USA women’s soccer team is currently on one of the most magical runs ever seen in sports.

They famously escaped elimination after Abby Wambach put in a header off of a Megan Rapinoe cross. This play was so great that it was a late addition as a nominee for the ESPY for Best Play, and it ended up winning.

At a time when billionaires are arguing with millionaires in court, these women are playing for eachother and their country. They want to bring glory back to the USA in the form of a World Cup championship. This is what most Americans, those who are sports fans and even those who are not, would like to see in all sports. They want to see athletes playing for the love of the game.

The women on the USA soccer team are doing just that, and every American, sports fan or not, should be rooting for them on Sunday.

Here are a couple reasons why:

The immaculate Tony Romo-Candice Crawford wedding trailer video

Email Post Email Post

You may not remember this, but way back when Midwest Sports Fans was still in its infancy, an up-and-coming, aspiring sports reporter named Candice Crawford contributed a few articles for us.

She quickly went on to bigger and better things here in the DFW Metroplex; chief among them, she married Tony Romo.

I never got the chance to formally congratulate Candice on her wedding here on the site, but since the trailer for their wedding just hit the Internet today – yes, a trailer…for a wedding video – this seems like the perfect time to do it.

So congratulations to Candice and Tony, and best of luck on a happy future together.

Now enjoy their immaculately shot and produced wedding video trailer:

“Scumbag James Harrison” goes off in Men’s Journal interview

Email Post Email Post
scumbag-james-harrison-9-million

If you have not seen it by now, Steelers linebacker James Harrison absolutely went off on a few subjects in an article at Men’s Journal. He predictably rips Roger Goodell and the New England Patriots, but surprisingly even spews some venom at members of his own team.

Some people seem to admire Harrison’s “refreshing” honesty. Personally, I think that Harrison comes across like a classless idiot, even though I simultaneously find his story of hard work and perseverance inspiring, as it speaks to the genuine fire in his heart and his extreme mental and physical toughness.

James Harrison is, without question, a complicated and multi-layered figure, a compelling amalgamation of virtue and vile born to be a star figure on America’s gladiatorial gridiron; but ultimately, I think he pretty much just comes across as a scumbag in this interview.

So, in the spirit of Reddit and one of the many memes often found there (which started as “Scumbag Steve” if you want the background), let’s salute “Scumbag James Harrison” and the most notorious of the comments in his Men’s Journal interview heard ’round the sports world.

Detroit’s possible departure from the Central Division would be sad but ultimately good for the Chicago Blackhawks

NHL-Detroit-Red-Wings-vs-Chicago-Blackhawks

Since the recent move of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg there have been many news stories and blog posts about the NHL realigning its divisions and even switching teams from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference and vice versa. The newest report that came out Monday and that CSNchicago.com reported on Tuesday morning has the Central Division consisting of the Minnesota, Winnipeg, Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Dallas, and possibly Columbus.

Read over the teams again. See anything missing?

There’s no Detroit in that list.

What Ever Happened to Wang Zhizhi?

Last week news leaked that Yao Ming would retire from the NBA. Yao himself has not confirmed that news, but the injury-plagued Rockets center announced that he would hold a press conference in Shanghai on July 20 to discuss his plans for his career. Jonathan Abrams at Grantland considers Yao’s legacy.

Abrams calls Yao a “once-in-a-generation” player, in large part because he “connected the NBA to China in a way no other player could.”

The NBA had long targeted China as a fertile ground to expand the game’s global interest. NBA commissioner David Stern appointed the league’s first Beijing-based employee in 1990. Players began traveling there to host clinics in 1997. Still, the full potential of the league’s popularity there went untapped until Yao’s 2002 debut. It is difficult imagining Stern manufacturing a better ambassador than Yao.

Abrams doesn’t mention that Yao was not the first Chinese player to play in the NBA. Wang Zhizhi beat him by 18 months.
