Shaquille O’Neal retires, ending one of the truly unique on- and off-court careers in NBA history

Shaquille O’Neal retired today, and he did it in his own unique, unexpected way. He tweeted it. Really, it was the only appropriate way for a true on-court original and off-court sports/entertainment pioneer like Shaq to go out.

“The Diesel” has been a special player since the moment he entered the NBA. He made an immediate impact, averaging 23 and 14 his rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors, and he was named an All-Star starter — the first to do so as a rookie since Jordan.

His dominance revolutionized the position of center, unlike anyone before or since.

Jim Tressel article by George Dohrmann and Indiana/A-Hope piece by Mike Fish are contrasts in quality and conviction

Within the past week, a pair of investigative reporting pieces have been released relative to two college programs I follow closely.

The first was Mike Fish’s piece on ESPN.com about the ties between A-HOPE, the Indiana Elite AAU program, and IU basketball, which interests me as both an alumnus and a native Hoosier.  The other was George Dohrmann’s Sports Illustrated report on Jim Tressel’s pattern of willful ignorance and potential violations within the Ohio State football program, which I follow as a condition of my residency in Ohio.

Whatever your feelings are about either of these schools or teams, what struck me most was the contrast in both the quality and factual content of the reporting as well as the conviction of each writer in the aftermath of their stories.

Discuss: Jason Whitlock implores blacks to follow gays’ lead in promoting self-respect through sports

Jason Whitlock published a terrific column today at FoxSports. Link and excerpt below, then come back here to discuss if you want to.

Blacks must do more to promote self-respect — Jason Whitlock

Gay people have enough common sense and self-respect to fight against damaging, dehumanizing slurs.

We don’t, black people.

You are 100 times more likely to hear the N-word tossed around on a basketball court or football field than any gay slur.

Kemba Walker, who is black, won a national championship in April and dropped a “damn n—-a” on Jim Nantz’s live CBS microphone as he prepared to be interviewed. America laughed. Nantz never batted an eyebrow. There was no controversy.

We accept it. Worse, we expect it. Our self-hate and disrespect are cultural benchmarks.

For those of you who know me only as a byline, I am neither gay nor black, so I don’t have a horse in this race. That said, I completely agree with Whitlock’s overall point here.

I also particularly related with Grant Hill’s sentiment as expressed in the article. Hill recently filmed a PSA about the use of the word “gay” and has apparently received a tremendous amount of backlash from a segment of his fanbase. Still, he proud to have filmed the PSA:

I’ve used those words in the last year or two. I can’t say that I haven’t. But being in the PSA is a way of holding myself accountable. Words have meaning.”

This has been my overall point all along. Words do have meaning. And while I despite political correctness that inhibits our ability speak honestly and freely, I also believe that loaded words with hate-filled historical contexts should only be used with utmost of discretion, not flippantly tossed about as general nouns in a pejorative sense. That’s not “honest” communication; it’s at best lazy and at worst purposeful hate speech. This is why I have not had too much of a problem with NBA coming down harshly on Kobe and Joakim Noah for directing the word “faggot” at an official and a fan, respectively.

And if I admit and acknowledge that, I have a hard time then rationalizing passive acceptance of the use of words “nigger” or “nigga”, as they are so often used today, for the same reasons that Whitlock brings up.

I’m curious what everyone else things about this and am happy to discuss with any and all who want to comment. A few questions to get things going:

  1. Does focusing so much on use and misuse of words like “gay” and “faggot” and “nigga” inhibit our ability to have honest, open communication?
  2. Should leagues like the NBA be in the business of legislating speech, as they have done with Kobe Bryant and Joakim Noah?
  3. Is Jason Whitlock right that blacks should follow the lead of gays in not tolerating language that is offensive and degrading?

Thoughts appreciated below. It’s a topic I find fascinating.

College Hoops First Impressions: Big East (Volume 1)

Email Post Email Post
peyton-siva-louisville

The 16-team behemoth that is the Big East was at the forefront of the college basketball headlines throughout the 2010-11 season. The conference dominated the rankings, placing eight teams in the Top 20 as of late February. This led to the Big East landing an unprecedented 11 teams in the NCAA Tournament, though an underwhelming performance over the first weekend of the Big Dance earned them harsh criticism.

Everything ended on a high note, however, with the same UConn team who won an astonishing five games in five days to claim the Big East Tournament cutting down the nets as NCAA Champs.

Naturally, many will be looking for a repeat performance this year, which may be a tall order given the outflow of talent following last season.  Of the six – yes, six – first-team All Conference performers from last year, five are gone.  Throw in four of the five second-teamers and three third-teamers being gone, and the league lost 12 of its top16 players according to that measure.  Luckily, the inflow of talent is just as strong with as many as seven Top 25 recruiting classes according to some scouting services.

With so many teams to break down (and because I don’t want the editors to punch me in the face), I’m breaking this one up into two parts.

It’s Maurice Clarett telling “his side” back in 2004. I think a lot of people dismissed it as being just the bitter ramblings of a selfish, entitled kid. Seems pretty reasonable with the context of the last seven years, doesn’t it?

The NBA Finals have begun, and the chase for Dirk or LeBron’s first ring is underway.

This game came down to three things; defense; bench play; and rebounding. The Miami Heat are quite fond of all three, and they proved it last night. As for the Mavs, they had the game’s leading scorer, but that did not translate into a Game 1 W.
