A few days ago, I shared with you a link to The LeBron James Headband Timeline.

Well, as you might expect, someone intrepid Interwebs user decided to extrapolate the current trends out over the next half decade and has posited the image below as a projection for where LeBron’s headband will be positioned come the year 2016.

I LOL’d.

From the Rafters: A Look at Retired Numbers in the NBA

Less than 24 hours after Shaq tweeted his intentions to retire, one of his former teams announced a retirement of another kind. The Lakers said that they will retire Shaq’s #34 jersey, and #34 will join #13, #22, #25, #32, #33, #42, and #44 in the Staples Center rafters.

(Bonus points if you can name the Lakers player who wore each of those numbers.*)

Retiring numbers is by no means limited to the NBA, but the ritual is especially meaningful in basketball because a) an individual player can have a bigger impact on his franchise in basketball than in any other team sport, and b) basketball arenas are ideal for hanging banners. When you peruse the banners hanging from rafters around the league, you discover all sorts of interesting things.

One video and two images that sum up NBA Finals Game 2

I watched last night’s Mavs-Heat game at Frankie’s here in Dallas, and you can imagine how great of an experience it was. Once D-Wade’s three from the corner put the Heat up 15, the air was almost completely let out of the building, but what happened over the next 7+ minutes re-filled the room with emotion, optimism, and excitement like few sporting events I’ve ever seen.

Woj: “Nowitzki saves Mavs in epic comeback”

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports did the best job of anyone I saw at encapsulating last night’s terrific Heat-Mavericks game. Of course, it all centers around the great, incomparable Dirk Nowitzki.

Chicago Cubs At A Familiar Crossroads

For a real Cubs fan, hope springs eternal.

The phrase “There’s always next year” is part of Cubbie-blue language. It’s a part of Cubs Culture. Disappointment is our watch word, a blue sports T-shirt bearing a big red “C” is our uniform, and past victories are our memories.

And unfortunately, 2011 is shaping up like so many seasons Cubs fans have suffered through in the past.

NBA Finals Game 2 Prediction: Two bold reasons why the Mavericks will win Game 2…and the series

Email Post Email Post
tyson-chandler

I have read way too many columns this week that went somewhat like the following:

Miami is the better team, and they will more than likely win the title. They have the two best players in the series, and they can always score during crunch time. However, if Dirk plays really well, and the Mavericks shoot well from three-point range, and Dallas’ big play tough, and JJ Barea has a huge series, and the Heat struggle…Dallas can win.

I hate writers that try to have it both ways. What has “Sports Analyst X” really said in the previous paragraph that the knowledgaeble sports fan doesn’t already know?

Nothing.

To be honest, it’s tough to be a blogger. Half of the blogosphere is full of authors just trying to be controversial and drive traffic. “If I say that Kobe is better than Jordan, people will read it.” Another 30% of writers are just, to be honest, either boring or stupid.

We, at MSF, try our best to be interesting, but informative. The reality is that many people will visit MSF only after they have visited ESPN, FoxSports, and SI. I feel bad for these people, because outside of a few bold writers that offer legitimate insight, they really don’t get to read anything compelling.

I understand that many of you will disagree with what I’m about to write. That’s fine. That’s the best part about sports: having conversations (read: arguments) about what we think is going to happen. But I refuse to be like “Sports Analyst X.”

Here are the two things that Rick Carlisle MUST do and WILL do in order to win the series for Dallas.

Video of Adam Jones’ ridonkulous Mays-esque catch definitely qualifies as must-see

Wow. I don’t often say that a catch is “Willie Mays-esque” but the effort turned in last night by the Orioles’ Adam Jones most certainly qualifies.

Yet another “LOLCubs” moment at Wrigley

As you know, I take great enjoyment in anything that is disparaging to the Chicago Cubs. While perusing Deadspin yesterday, I found yet another example of the Cubs being, well, the Cubs.

It’s this logo, located in the tunnel connecting the Cubs dugout to the clubhouse.

Sharper could retire

Email Post Email Post

Update: As Saints free agent Darren Sharper considers his NFL career, the lockout is having a massive effect.  If the season is lost all together, there is a good chance we have seen the last of Sharper in the NFL.  If however it is only delayed, the AP is reporting Sharper believes this could actually be advantageous to him and other veterans, as teams may favor signing and playing them over inexperienced younger players.

Bears will use Bennett more

Email Post Email Post

Update: Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz reiterated that WR Earl Bennett will have a "much larger role" in this year's offense. "We didn't throw it to him enough," Martz said. "That will be remedied … He established himself as a guy who needs to get a lot more balls than he did."  This kid could be in for a very nice season.

Cardinals still interested in Kolb

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Arizona Republic reports the Cardinals "will pursue a trade" with the Eagles for quarterback Kevin Kolb once the lockout is lifted. There isn't a more trusted Cardinals voice than the Republic's Kent Somers, and he sounds confident that a Kolb deal will be Arizona's top priority once transactions are allowed.

Moss wants to re-sign with Redskins

Email Post Email Post

Update: Appearing on ESPN 980 Washington on Wednesday, free agent wideout Santana Moss reiterated that he would prefer to re-sign with the Redskins.  Moss set career highs in catches (93) and receiving yards (1,115) last season, but the Redskins may want to move on from the 32 year old wideout, especially after grabbing three receivers in the NFL Draft.

Gabbert may be starter

Email Post Email Post

Update: Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times Union confirms that the Jaguars will give No. 10 overall pick Blaine Gabbert a legitimate chance to start as a rookie.  According to Ganguli, Gabbert "won't sit for the sake of development," and "he will start … if he beats out (David) Garrard."

Garrard is due a salary of almost $8 million in 2011 so it would be difficult to believe the Jags would spend that kind of money on a backup.  He would almost certainly become trade bait should Gabbert outplay him.

Britt cleared of felony charge

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Nashville Tennessean is reporting that felony charges against Titans wideout Kenny Britt were reduced by a New Jersey prosecutor's office Wednesday.  Britt, arrested on April 12 after a car chase, has had the felony charge of eluding a police officer dropped. He now faces three disorderly person charges, all of which are lesser in severity.
