In Defense of LeBron James

Crazy.

You are going to think this column is crazy.

Everyone, at some point has to make a decision. Do you live life to win, or to have fun?

Should this really be a question? Isn’t fun secondary? Shouldn’t we live life to do our best, and succeed as much as we can?

Not necessarily.

Take college, for example. Would you rather go through college with a 3.5, have a ton of friends, live stress free, and make lasting memories? Or would you want to work as hard as possible, sacrificing time, friends, energy, and girls to earn a 4.0?

Both roads have their pros and cons. Personally, I would go with option number one, but I have many friends that chose door number two and will make much more money than me the rest of their life because of it.

So how does this translate to basketball? Because every superstar, eventually, has to make the same choice.

Of course, this leads us to LeBron James.

Study: More hugs and high fives = more wins

Leave it to the Wall Street Journal to find a unique and enlightening way to look at these NBA Finals and sports in general. (It sure ain’t coming from these guys...)

Did you know that there is empirical evidence suggesting that the more “touchy-feely” a sports team is, the more likely it is to win?

I didn’t. But we all do now.

Take this wit chew: Dirk is feeling much better

Email Post Email Post

In case you’ve only been watching ESPN, and thus have heard about nothing but LeBron James and unfounded rumors of “profound” personal problems, there is this guy named Dirk Nowitzki for a team called the Dallas Mavericks who was sick during Game 4.

He’s feeling much better now.

Dwyane Wade writes poignant and universally relevant op/ed about fatherhood

My thanks to Ari for sending me this link. It’s a an op/ed that Dwyane Wade wrote for the Tribune in which he discusses his struggles to gain custody of his sons and how important being an active, present father is to him and to society at large.

Hey ESPN, who is Miami playing in the Finals again?

This screenshot from ESPN pretty much sums up ESPN’s NBA coverage this entire season and certainly their less-than-balanced coverage during these Finals.

LeBron’s Time To Shine Is Now

lebron-james

It’s quite clear with the stats he left out on the court that LeBron James didn’t show up in Game 4 of these NBA Finals:  Eight points on 3-of-11 shooting, 0-for-3 from deep, and 50% from the charity stripe.

Clearly these aren’t numbers of a legend, nor are they numbers of a LeBron James we are accustomed to watching.

RB Johnson wants new deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Paul Kuharsky is reporting that running back Chris Johnson "indicated" at Titans player-organized workouts Wednesday that he indeed expects a new contract after the lockout.  Added backup RB Javon Ringer, "I know he wants to make sure he's taken care of personally with the money situation."  Johnson is undoubtedly one of the best running backs in the league, and is slated to make a measly $800,000 in 2011 which is a joke.

Pryor may end up in UFL

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that it is possible that former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor will play his first pro season in the United Football League.  This would be an option should the NFL fail to hold a supplemental draft.

Mavs player calls LeBron out for “checking out” of Game 4

Email Post Email Post

It’s what pretty much everyone else has been saying, but obviously it carries a little more weight – and potential ramifications – when it comes from an actual player. I guess those three 3-pointers really emboldened DeShawn Stevenson.

This is what makes the MLB Draft awesome and irrelevant all at the same time

Email Post Email Post

The Texas Rangers drafted Mickey McConnell in the 31st round of this year’s draft. If that name sounds familiar, it should. McConnell has been a standout basketball player for St. Mary’s for the last four years.

During that time, however, he has not played a lick of baseball.

Gotta love the late rounds of the MLB draft. And who would really be shocked if this kid someday made the big leagues?

Tommy Craggs chimes in on why Grantland Rice “sucked”

I found this to be a pretty interesting perspective on a day like today.

Why Grantland Rice Sucked – Deadspin

I must admit to being rather ignorant of the writings of Grantland Rice, though I obviously know of his legend and understand, conceptually, his importance in overall world of sports writing.

For those of you more familiar with Rice’s actual work, do you agree or disagree with Craggs?

Update on Baseball’s Most Over and Underrated Players

miguel-cabrera

Back in February, USA Today’s 2011 MLB Preview Magazine published a lengthy piece by yours truly, whereupon I rendered my thoughts on who the most over and underrated players in the game were as we approached the new campaign.

I figured I might as well do occasional updates on these “predictions,” so as to capriciously praise or condemn myself.
