For LeBron James, Third Time’s A Charm

Email Post Email Post

For LeBron James this series meant it all.

It meant that he had another shot at going up against a team that had haunted him for years; it meant proving to the world that he did make the right Decision; and it was a milestone in his eight-year NBA career.

The Celtics have been the enemy since 2008, and LeBron James knew this coming into the series. No chalk-tosses at the beginning of games, no pre-game jokes, and no horsing around. This series meant straight up business for LeBron. And business is what James brought to this series, and it is exactly what he brought to Game 5 of this Eastern Conference Semifinals series.

Thoughts on LeBron and “That’s Retarded”

Email Post Email Post

During a recent press conference, LeBron James muttered the phrase “that’s retarded” under his breath, and it was picked up by his microphone. It was not a big deal at the time, but it has been all over the national and local news, especially in Cleveland. People are saying how they cannot believe that LeBron has no respect for people with mental disabilities.

Washington Wizards Unveil New Jerseys, Logo

In a recent ceremony, the Washington Wizards organization unveiled their new jerseys, color scheme, and logos. It wasn’t much longer after that when the Wizards begun tearing down any posters, banners, or anything that resembled the Wizards of blue, gold & white inside the Verizon Center.

It’s about time if you ask me.

Milt-down Countdown: The Worst of Milton Bradley

Email Post Email Post

During the offsseason, after he mad the blotter (again), I wrote an article suggesting that the Seattle Mariners and Major League Baseball may finally have had enough of controversial outfielder/DH/general nuisance Milton Bradley.

Well it only took 35 games for the Seattle Mariners to become totally convinced of that sentiment and mercifully eat the final ¾ of Milt’s $13 million contract for this season alone, designating Milton for assignment – or in other words throwing him just like a salmon at Pike Place Market–which is appropriate, seeing as how the smell there is a breath of fresh air compared to Milt’s personality.

Photo Diary: My CuervoGames 2011 Kickoff Adventure

Team Awesome

Sunny Scottsdale, AZ was the perfect place to kick off the 2011 CuervoGames 2011.

The 100 + degree temperatures were the perfect way to launch the event (at least for a girl from the Midwest). We never ran out of margaritas, so the heat never became a problem.

What exactly are the CuervoGames, you ask? They are a man’s fantasy playground. You have 1) extreme competition; 2) beautiful women walking around in what some males call “favorable attire”, and; 3) tequila, tequila and, that’s right, more tequila.

But don’t worry ladies–there is room for you at the CuervoGames. Welcome to my tequila adventure!

The Mind of a Point Guard and Russell Westbrook’s Struggle to Understand “The Secret”

Email Post Email Post
magic-isiah

In The Book of Basketball, Bill Simmons describes a conversation he had with Isiah Thomas where he learned “The Secret” of basketball. The SportsGuy listened intently while the one of the greatest pure point guards of all time told him what truly mattered on the basketball court.

Amazingly enough, the secret to basketball is that it’s NOT about basketball…at least according to Isiah Thomas.

The way basketball is structured, especially the NBA, encourages players to play for their own stats. If a player averages 20 p.p.g., or 10 r.p.g., or 10 a.p.g., or so on, HE will get paid. On the flip side, a player like Shane Battier bounces from team to team, EVEN THOUGH every team he has ever played for admits that he contributed in ways that never showed up in the box score.

Thomas knew from experience.  His Bad Boys seemed to get closer and closer every single year, but they could never get over the hump. Eventually, it was a trade that made absolutely no sense from a statistical standpoint that seemed to push them to the finish line. When they traded Adrian Dantley for Mark Aguirre, they lost both inside scoring AND rebounding. But for some reason, the team meshed better with Aguirre, it opened up more minutes for a young Dennis Rodman, and the Pistons ended up winning two straight titles.

The secret to winning went far beyond basketball and the stats that were being piled up by players. It was something mental. Something that stretched far beyond the hardwood. Until each player made the choice to put team over self, the team was doomed.

That’s one reason why the point guard position has always fascinated me. More than any other position, it is responsible for making sure that everyone on the floor understands and abides by “The Secret.”

Chicago Blackhawks: 5 Best Moments of the 2010-11 Season

It’s been two weeks since the Vancouver Canucks ended the Chicago Blackhawks’ season, and since then my sadness has already passed, now replaced by optimism and excitement for next season.

While the 2010-11 season wasn’t as much fun, and was far more painful than the Stanley Cup season, there was still a lot to cheer and to be happy about for ‘Hawks fans.

The End Of A Dynasty

Email Post Email Post
kobe-jason-terry

The Los Angeles Lakers 2011 season is over, but in some ways this is only where it all begins.

With this loss comes tears, shattered dreams, and the possible end of an era that we as NBA fans have become accustomed to; an era that is used to watching the yellow & purple playing basketball in early June; an era that is accustomed to watching the Black Mamba hit buzzer-beaters, match up on Christmas with the King of the East, and bring more titles to the already title-filled Los Angeles. Whether it was the return of Boston vs Los Angeles, the battle with Superman, or Green vs Yellow part deux, the Lakers were always there.

Add the NBA’s greatest coach of all-time, an all-world NBA player, and one of the better supporting casts in the NBA, and you get three-straight Finals appearances. No matter how powerful the NBA’s Western Conference was, it was always the same story at the end of the day.

But with every good story comes an ending, and maybe not an ending most of us would have wanted.

The Kentucky Derby: Why We Watch

Email Post Email Post

The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby took place Saturday, and a record crowd was on hand to watch the event. This also included millions of us who watched on TV.

The winner was a horse named Animal Kingdom, but the average person tuning in had never heard of the horse before, or any horse in the field for that matter.

This raises the question, why do we watch a sport that is only relevant a few times a year*?

Dirk and his Dallas Mavericks are overcoming adversity and might finally be ready to win it all

Email Post Email Post
dirk-nowitzki-jason-kidd

Dirk Nowitzki’s game is unmatched in the NBA’s current era. In fact, as Jerod mentioned briefly yesterday, Dirk’s game has never been matched. No player in NBA history has ever brought what Dirk can bring to the table.

At 7-feet tall, not only can Nowitzki cause havoc in the paint, but Dirk has one of the sweetest jumpers from deep. Then there’s his ability to put the ball on the floor, and the cherry on top has to be his sweet, sweet turnaround-fade away jumper from the top of the key.

Add all of that to a consistent owner like Mark Cuban, a solid Mavericks team filled with a mixture of vets and young guns, and a solid fan base to support them through thick and thin, and you come up with an amazing result: eleven consecutive playoff appearances.

Yes, Dirk Nowitzki and his Mavericks are at it yet again, but do we really appreciate them? Do we really admire what Dirk has done for the NBA? Or are we so used to he and his Mavs being in the playoffs for eleven straight years that we take them for granted?

As unfair as it is to say, yes, we do take Dirk and his Mavs for granted.

But I’m here to remind you how this Mavs team should and will ultimately be remembered. I’m going to remind you of how dynamic, amazing, and incredible the Dirk Nowitzki’s game is, and how he has changed his game like Jordan, and how the Dirk Mavs’ might finally be ready to possess a Larry O’Brien trophy.

DFW digs Dirk…and so does MSF

dirk-nowitzki-dfw-digs-dirk-video

In today’s edition of Today’s Best, I included a video that highlights just how unstoppable the step-back jumper of Dirk Nowitzki is. Seeing that video reignited my desire to write a post about Nowitzki, who I think is far and away the most underappreciated basketball player of my lifetime.

It’s not just that Dirk is supremely talented and an indomitable scoring force, it’s that his talents combined with his size and style are so wondrously unique. Sure, an easy comparison can be made to Larry Bird because both guys are white, shoot ridiculously well, and have floppy blonde hair, but such a comparison is terribly lazy and incomplete.

Unfortunately, I don’t have time this afternoon to write the full Dirk Nowitzki Appreciation Post that I’m planning, but it’ll come at some point soon, especially if the Mavericks continue their run in this year’s playoffs. So you’ll have to wait for that, but you won’t have to wait for a worthy ode to the greatness of Dirk. Some of his biggest fans in Dallas took care of that and posted it to YouTube.
