College Hoops First Impressions: Big 12

Email Post Email Post

The loss of Colorado and Nebraska left Big 12 fans and supporters largely unphased heading into the 2011-12 season.  Sure, those teams had some bright moments last season, and Colorado was arguably the biggest NCAA Tournament snub.  But the losses of two teams without a storied college hoops history in a league where pigskin reigns supreme isn’t enough to work anyone into a panic.

However, the conference lost its share of star power with five players entering the NBA draft along with high-scoring guards LaceDarius Dunn and Jacob Pullen (beard sold separately).  Iowa State’s Diante Garrett was another underrated player who has earned high praise from NBA scouts.

The departure of 10 of the league’s top 12 scorers (including the top six) and six of its top eight rebounders should lead to a wide open race for the conference championship with four squads holding a relatively equal shot at the crown.  And oh by the way, there are four new coaches in the mix as well.

All is not lost though.  Perry Jones stunned many experts by returning to Baylor, and a number of impact transfers (mostly at Iowa State) become eligible this year.  Throw in three Top 25 recruiting classes, including three of the Top 10 players by some rankings, and things should remain entertaining in the Big 12.

Worst case, you get to hear Bob Knight breaking down Big Monday matchups once a week.  Shot fake!

Beginning Baseball: The Twins Need Change…NOW!

Liriano

Next week marks the start of June. Yeah, so what? I will tell you what.

According to my baseball savvy friends, I have until the start of June to use the excuse “It’s only the beginning of the season.” Once, June starts, BAM! It’s no longer the beginning of the season.

This is a phrase I have used much too often over the past two months. As we all know, the Twins aren’t exactly having a “dream” season, and as June swiftly approaches, the reality of it all is beginning to sink in.

Video: Charles Barkley flips off rude, rowdy Miami Heat fans

Before Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals last night, TNT decided that it’d be nice for the pre-game show to take place outside of American Airlines Arena.

If you ask me, it wasn’t that bad of an idea.

We were able to see Heat fans in a very lively manner, we were able to catch the nice backdrop of South Beach, and we even were able to witness Charles Barkley get a towel thrown his way…

Wait, what?

I love stories like this.

Bears rookie J.T. Thomas (6th round pick) recently took a beautiful young lady named Joslyn Levell to a dance, but it wasn’t just any dance; it was her 8th grade prom.

Three games into the conference finals, the Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder both find themselves staring at 2-1 series deficits.

While the two teams may be in similar holes, there is nothing similar when comparing the two situations.

Get to know Zach Galifianakis, the comedian who “hates to be loved”

Email Post Email Post

Hangover 2 opens this weekend, and I’m not sure if I’m more excited or terrified. I very much enjoyed the first movie and am nervous that the sequel will not be nearly as good, a lesson history has taught me over and over and over again.

But even if the script sucks and even if it ends up being too much like the first one and even if it only produces 50% of the laughs that the first Hangover did, the flick has the following three things going for it:

  • Ed Helms (aka Nard Dog from The Office)
  • Ken Joeng (aka Senor Change from Community)
  • Zach Galifianakis

As MSF readers know, I love Zach Galifianakis. He is both refreshing and hilarious, and I love seeing guys who have worked hard toiling in obscurity for years and years finally hit it big and get the acclaim they deserve.

For anyone else who loves Galifianakis, or just for anyone excited about seeing Hangover 2 when it opens this weekend, Time.com published a great profile of Galifianakis last week. I just found it today, and it’s well worth the click.

Video of Joakim Noah’s unfortunate, inappropriate Kobe impression

There is a good chance you have seen this by now, but I’ll post anyway for those who have not. I discussed it when Kobe Bryant’s unfortunate use a gay slur was caught on TV, so it’s only fair to give similar treatment to Joakim Noah’s similarly unfortunate use of the same slur.

Japanese sport of Botaoshi induces WTFs across the globe

botaoshi

The Japanese are known for their quirky game shows and rather, shall we say, unique forms of physical competition. But the latest Japanese sport product to gain viral attention here in the States may be the most unique and WTF of them all.

It’s called Botaoshi, and while it does somewhat resemble the Butler-Connecticut National Championship game from this past April, I promise Matt Howard is nowhere to be found in the videos below.

Atlanta Thrashers’ expected move to Winnipeg feels good, but doubts exist

atlanta-moving-to-winnipeg

The NHL news world was rocked Thursday as news broke that an agreement was possible that could move the failing Atlanta Thrashers to the more hockey-friendly city, Winnipeg. Almost immediately after the news broke there were stories denying the claim or calling the deal “not official.”

But days after the initial news break, the relocation looks like it’s going to be a sure thing.

Joe Posnanski deftly describes the day Dick Ebersol abruptly resigned

Email Post Email Post

Joe Posnanski is my favorite sports writer, bar none. I’ve said this many times, in many different forums, so it should come as no surprise.

His recent column on the day Dick Ebersol resigned – Posnanski was conducting an interview with him immediately before Ebersol went into the meeting and stepped down – is just one more example of Posnanski’s storytelling brilliance.

And seeing as how the article centers on Ebersol’s own propensity for great storytelling, it is even more appropriate that it was written JoePos.

Tom Verducci offers four ways to improve Interleague Play

Email Post Email Post

Jim Leyland and Joe Maddon have both railed against Interleague Play this weekend. I like it, but I agree that it’s stale and could use a little shakeup. Tom Verducci offered four ways to improve Interleague Play, and I agree with them all, especially playing all Interleague games in a block and how he proposes the DH be handled.

What do you think?
