Madden fans have only five more days to vote on who will become the Madden 12 cover athlete.
The two finalists are Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis.
Beginning on March 21, fans were able to vote on ESPN.com for who they want as the cover athlete. Voting is done in a bracket style similar to the NCAA’s March Madness.
Vick, a 3rd seed, and the 10th seed Hillis, are surprise finalists for different reasons.
A lot of people are surprised to see Michael Vick there so soon after his arrest and release from prison. Peyton Hillis was not supposed to make it this far because he plays in a small market in Cleveland, and he has knocked out some big dogs like Ray Rice, Matt Ryan, and Aaron Rodgers.
As a Browns fan, my vote is going to Peyton Hillis, and I suggest that other Browns fans and proud citizens of the Midwest vote for Hillis too.
I’m recommending that you vote for him because he is a terrific representative of the hard-working Midwesterner, and he is a excellent football player.
Peyton was born in Arkansas — not quite the Midwest, but he plays for Cleveland and he shares their hard-working mentality. His tough, reckless running style has made him a fan favorite.
Last season he rushed for 1,177 yards and had 13 total touchdowns. For Browns fans he has been one of the most exciting players to watch since their return to the NFL in 1999.
Now, some of you might be wondering why am I promoting my favorite player on my favorite team to be Madden’s cover athlete when most of their cover athletes have gotten injuries during that season. It’s a fair question.
The first reason why I want him to be on the cover is that I have always thought it would be awesome to see a Cleveland Brown on the cover of Madden.
Secondly, because of Peyton’s hard running style he is going to get hurt sooner or later anyway; so any “Madden Curse” won’t come as huge shock to fans. Case in point: nagging injuries caused a decrease of production at the end of last season.
Also, the shelf life of NFL running backs is short, so Hillis might of well get as much fame and recognition as he can while he is still at the top of his game. Besides, last year’s Madden cover athlete Drew Brees didn’t get hurt, so maybe he broke the Madden Curse.
Whether you are going to vote for Hillis or Vick, I recommend that you vote anyways. It’s great that the people at EA Sports are nice enough to let us select the cover athlete, and I think we should take full advantage of it.
