Today’s Best: Kristen Cavallari and Jay Cutler Get Engaged, Derrick Rose Gets Enraged, and the Pacific Barreleye Fish Proves That Mother Nature is Never Upstaged

Welcome to Today’s Best by MSF. This is our daily rundown of links, laughs, and lovely ladies that will help you get through your work day.

In today’s edition, Kristen Cavallari gets engaged to Jay Cutler, Derrick Rose and other NBA players get mad about foul calls that almost surely were correct, Joe Posnanski and Jon Washburn provide the best of the web and of MSF, and Mother Nature knocks your socks off with the craziest looking fish you’ve ever seen.

Best of MSF

Get used to Jon Washburn’s article showing up here in the “Best of MSF” section, because nearly everything he submits stands out as a shining example of the terrific analysis and insight that the MSF team is capable of, and what bloggers in general are capable of when they truly love and understand the games they cover.

In his latest article, Jon informs us all why comparing college basketball to the NBA is like comparing apples to oranges.

Best of the Web

A new section I’m starting today, inspired by one of my favorite writers: the great Joe Posnanski. I don’t know if I’ll do a “Best of the Web” every day, but I will when I read something that strikes me as especially insightful, entertaining, or both – you know, the kind of articles that Joe churns out daily.

I encourage you to go read his latest, entitled “Daughters and Roller Skating.” Excerpt below.

I desperately hope that she keeps that confidence, that verve, that fearlessness. I believe that stuff can change the world. That is the confidence I see in so many people I admire, people who are doing things, fixing things, achieving things. Thing is, I don’t know if she will keep that verve because, frankly, I don’t know where it came from in the first place. There’s only so much as parents you know. Every year, that becomes more apparent.

Today’s Best Beauty

Word broke today that Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler popped the question to Kristen Cavallari and that she said yes. Unlike the Bears, Cavallari did not have to trade any premium draft picks to land Cutler, so that’s good. It also provides an obvious tie-in to make her today’s best beauty.

Roger Goodell contributed an essay to the Wall Street Journal explaining the owners’ perspective on what will happen if the players “win.”

Bill Parcells is providing some intriguing draft commentary leading up to Thursday’s festivities. PFT describes Parcells’ comments about how “gossiping scouts” were a source of valuable information for him when he was running draft rooms.

Bill Simmons breaks down the NBA’s small market woes.

Michael Vick chastises cellphone app called “Dog Wards” that glorifies dog fighting. Good for you Mike.

I always like knowing how guys were before they became superstars. Here is an article entitled “Before Manny Became Manny.”

And it continues: “Apple Patent Reveals Extensive Stalking Plans.” Steve Jobs has responded.

If you want to know how physically balanced you are, take this test.

Looks like they found a star that is “as old as the universe.”

Well, the first paragraph of this article will jar you just a little bit.

Pics & GIFs

I don’t know the story behind the animated GIF below, but either a) she is saying something she shouldn’t or b) he’s a gigantic tool and perhaps even a douche. It’s probably a and b.

And finally, via…is that Jay Mariotti in the line of fire? Let’s hope so.

Did you know…that the highest blood alcohol level on record is 1.480%? On the night of his intoxication he got into an accident. He survived the alcohol but died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Did you know…that when you search for something that does not exist at the resulting URL mocks you? Try it.

Did you know…that the MLB record for wins by a pitcher in a single season is 59. Read about Charles Radbourn’s rather remarkable 1884 season.

In case you need some evidence of the majesty and creativity of Mother Nature, I present the Pacific barreleye fish. This is quite possibly the most unique-looking creature I have ever seen.

Since I didn’t stumble upon any other fun videos today, I’m just going to post the Double Rainbow song for old time’s sake. Because it remains awesome..and always will be.

As always, we end Today’s Best by paying homage to the original inspiration for this post: Hot Clicks by Jimmy Traina.
