Butler-UConn Analysis and Prediction: My heart says Butler, but my head says…BUTLER!!!!

Email Post Email Post

As someone who has picked Butler in every single game of the entire tournament, what I’m about to write might not surprise you.

Regardless, don’t gloss over this fact: my heart wants to pick Butler…but so does my head.

Now, I understand that Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps, Dick Vitale, and Hubert Davis all picked UConn. In fact, the only person I have heard pick Butler is Doug Gottlieb…not exactly the person you want endorsing your team.

However, I have heard various forms of the same argument come out of every talking head’s mouth: “Kemba Walker is a winner, and he won’t let UConn lose.”

With all due respect to the Kemba, (believe me, I love watching the Revolutionary Iverson ball it up every night) that statement is a slap in the face to guys like Matt Howard, Ronald Nored, Shawn Vanzant, and Shelvin Mack.

I listened calmly as Jay Bilas told Mike and Mike on the radio this morning that “Butler would have a hard time stopping UConn’s fast break, and that would probably be the difference in the game.”

Apparently, research and facts are useless and irrelevant if you work for the World Wide Leader.  Someone should tell Jay that Butler just held one of the best fast breaking teams in the country, VCU, to ZERO fast break points on Saturday night.

But that’s ok. Butler has made a living off of proving the doubters wrong. The 2011 NCAA Championship Game will be no different.

This needs no introduction, except for me to say that it’s not about sports. But it’s uproariously funny. So just enjoy.

In the first of tonight’s two Final 4 matchups, the Butler Bulldogs defeated VCU 70-62 to advance to the NCAA Championship Game on Monday night.

In the second Final 4 game, Connecticut led most of the way and held on for a close victory late. Kentucky had a shot for a three on their final possession, but they missed. UConn grabbed the rebound and held on for the victory.

Monday night, the 8th seeded Butler Bulldogs will face the 3rd seeded Connecticut Huskies to determine the 2011 national championship. It’s David versus Goliath, and it’s going to be one hell of a game.

Final Four TV Tip Times, Game Previews and Live Blog: Butler-VCU, Kentucky-Connecticut

Email Post Email Post

It’s here.

One of the most unlikely and compelling Final Fours of my lifetime is less than two hours away from tipping off.

In the first game, we have Butler and VCU – two teams from non-BCS conferences who are seeded 8th and 11th. In the second game, we get a couple of college basketball blue bloods in Kentucky and Connecticut. Despite their program pedigrees, few expected them to make it to Houston, but they are here despite clouds of controversy hovering over their coaches.

Butler-VCU. Kentucky-UConn. The winner plays Monday. As Hawk Harrelson says: sit back, relax, and strap it down. It’s going to be one hell of a night of basketball and we’ll be here live blogging it all.

‘Whatcha talkin bout Bilas?’ T-Shirt a Final 4 Week Hit

One of the best parts about the passion of college sports fans is that it is often manifested with clever, funny memorabilia, often T-shirts.

This week, inspired by VCU’s surprising run to the Final 4, Richmond VA resident Spence Andrews created a T-shirt is absolutely brilliant in its sentiment and simplicity.

Which is why the “Whatcha talkin bout Bilas?” T-shirt has been a sensation sweeping the nation during Final Four Week.

This was not supposed to be one of John Calipari’s better teams.

This was not supposed to be one of Jim Calhoun’s better teams.

Yet somehow, some way, John Calipari and Jim Calhoun have led their Kentucky and UCONN teams to the 2011 Final Four to play the winner of Butler and VCU.

There are plenty of pejorative statements to be made about the checkered history and reputation of both Calipari and Calhoun, but for now we’ll stick just to basketball. And one of these two embattled men will be coaching for a national championship next Monday.

As Gus Johnson might say, this is college basketball.

If you say that you had Butler and VCU facing off in the Final Four, you’re a liar. Well…unless you’re these two folks. They did actually have Butler and VCU in the Final Four.

But they’re also insane. They have to be. Right?

Apparently not.

Saturday night, the most unlikely Final 4 in NCAA Tournament history will tip off when Horizon League champion Butler, an 8 seed, faces Colonial Athletic Association runner-up Virginia Commonwealth, an 11 seed.

March Madness indeed.

This was originally posted on March 27th, 2011

I feel like I just watched Kirk Gibson hit a hobbled home run, because all I can think right now is, “I don’t…believe…what I just saw!”

But it wasn’t a Kirk Gibson home run that I just saw; it was a VCU Rams home run. More like a grand slam, against #1 seeded Kansas. And now the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, led by Shaka Smart, will be facing the Butler Bulldogs, led by Brad Stevens, in the Final Four.

Wow.

103 years and counting.

That’s how long it has been since the Cubs last won the World Series back in 1908.

Sure, you might say that the 103rd season hasn’t even started yet and that I shouldn’t jump to conclusions. I say it looks like Cubs fans – at least one steaming Wrigley turd in particular – have already given up on 2011.

How else do you explain this?

Tiger Woods’ new swing mechanics under Sean Foley have him “jammed up” heading into Masters

Email Post Email Post
tiger-woods-new-swing

I was a teaching golf professional for a little over a year – not long enough, admittedly.  I was on my way to work at Kapalua when I met my wife and she found out a) how much money I made, and b) how much time single golf pros spend at the bar.

But even without ever having studied the golf swing, or having just a year of teaching experience, it is incredibly simple to look in, from the outside, and identify problems in the golf swing; and it doesn’t matter if it’s a weekend duffer or the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods’ swing.

With Masters quickly approaching next week, Tiger has now been with new coach Sean Foley for the past 7 months. I’ll tell you and I’d tell Tiger that, without a shadow of a doubt, Foley is the wrong coach.
