Jim Tressel suspension should be extended, so says self-proclaimed “Buck Nut”

Email Post Email Post
Sherlock Wetzel

It has been a long week for The Ohio State University athletic department and its enormous football fan base.

If you would, please give me a little time here, and deal with a little rambling, as I start out as an obnoxious Buckeye fan but try to gain some perspective so that I can offer a reasonable opinion on what the suspension for Coach Tressel should be and why.

This kind of thing takes time. You see, nothing rational comes out of Buckeye Nation’s collective mouth less than 72 hours after the fact. It takes the public flogging in the sports world for a whole week to realize your do no-wrong-coach actually will do wrong.

And for once with Jim Tressel, I am not talking about any BCS losses.

When Are Coed Sports OK?

Email Post Email Post
coed-field-hockey

Last month freshman wrestler Cassy Herkelman made national news when she won her opening match at Iowa’s state championship by forfeit. Her male opponent refused to wrestle her.

This week, Chantal Sutherland became the first female jockey to win the prestigious Santa Anita Handicap, riding Game On Dude, and Danica Patrick finished fourth in the Nationwide Series race in Las Vegas, the best ever finish for a woman in a national NASCAR race.

As a general rule, sports are an institution where the sexes don’t mix, but recent events have shown us that situations are now arising where men and women, girls and boys are competing with and against each other – and in many cases the girls are holding their own.

The question is, when are coed sports OK?

MLB, unlike NBA or even NFL, does NOT have a problem with parity

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig is famous — or infamous, depending upon your stance — for often stating that baseball is currently in “another Golden Age.”

To this, even I, a baseball ‘apologist’ who’s preferred the sport far more than any other his entire life, would perhaps snicker; but on the other hand, when Selig says baseball is “as popular as ever,” I maintain he is correct.

And one of the prime reasons, believe it or not, is the great parity in today’s game.

Kobe Bryant shoots for over an hour in Miami after close loss to Heat

kobe-shooting-after-heat-game

You don’t have to like Kobe Bryant, but you most certainly have to respect the man they call the “Black Mamba” for his commitment and dedication to winning.

Tonight, after losing a close battle in Miami against the scuffling Heat, Kobe Bryant stayed out on the floor at American Airlines Arena for over and hour shooting jumpshots from every spot on the floor. The terrific Adrian Wojnarowski chronicled Kobe’s impromptu post-game shoot-around tonight on Twitter.

Guy Dupuy shows us all how a dunk over a car is really done

Blake Griffin’s dunk over a Kia in the (rigged) Slam Dunk Contest was nice, but it was far less spectacular than some of the other dunks in this year’s contest.

And it most certainly was less spectacular than what Guy Dupuy from And1 did recently in Poland. Watch, and be mesmerized:

March Madness 2011 Preview: NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament Tickets, Dates, Sites & TV Info

march-madness-2011 bracket predictions picks

Update: For the second year in a row, we are holding an MSF Bracket Challenge over at ESPN.com. Sign up now and then fill in your brackets after they are announced on Selection Sunday.

March Madness 2011 is going to have a bit of a different flavor than the past few because, once again, the tournament field has been expanded.

The last expansion added a 65th team and instituted a so-called “play-in” game, which matched the two lowest seeded teams against one another for the right to play the top overall seed. That game has now been eliminated (or perhaps repurposed would be a better word), and three more teams have been added to the field – bringing the total to 68 overall.

In this post we will describe how the newly minted “First Four” round will play out, as well as provide all of the March Madness 2011 dates and locations, plus March Madness 2011 ticket and TV information.

15 Funny Videos of SNL Host Zach Galifianakis – Including 5 From His First Time Hosting Saturday Night Live

Email Post Email Post
zach-galifianakis-gq-froot-loops-in-beard

This Saturday night, March 12th, the incomparable Zach Galifianakis (seriously…who would you compare him to?) hosts Saturday Night Live for the second consecutive year. In fact, he is hosting SNL almost exactly a year later, as his hosting gig in 2010 came on March 6th.

It is a cliche at this point to say that SNL is not even close to as funny as it used to be, so I won’t pile on with more negativity. I’ll keep things positive and say that Zach G’s appearance last year was definitely one of the highlights, and I am looking forward to watching him host again this year.

To whet everyone’s appetite, this post includes some videos of Galifianakis’ last SNL appearance, plus some of the funnier YouTube clips of one of the best funniest comedians working today.

Ruminations on Jim Tressel Scandal: Scarlet & Gray and the Bigger Picture of the NCAA

Email Post Email Post
jim_tressel

This whole Jim Tressel scandal has really opened up a can of worms in my own head. I tweeted about it a decent amount last night and woke up thinking about it this morning. My first thought about the whole story is why the hell am I spending so much time reading about and thinking about Jim Tressel when there are clearly much, much more important things to be reading about and thinking about?

I suppose I don’t really have a great answer to that question, except to say that, well, I just care – whether I “should” or not. And I always will care. From the moment I was born, college sports were an integral part of my life, and they have remained an integral part of my life to this day. So I am naturally curious about this story in myriad ways, both for how it will affect things on the field and, more importantly, what it says about college sports on the whole.

It is way to early to tell how Tresselgate will affect the college football season next year, but if I were to whittle down my complicated gut reaction to what this says about college sports as a whole into one sentence, it would be this: the gray area in big time college athletics has never been grayer, and it gets more shaded (shady?) by the year.

March Madness 2011: Butler in, but Bulldogs, Indiana State, and other mid-majors will face annual Selection Sunday bias

Email Post Email Post
ISU Sycamores

Last night, Butler University’s Bulldogs– you know, the defending national runners up by about three inches –  continued their 2011 renaissance with a 9th consecutive win, taking the Horizon League’s automatic bid, and salvaging what was, until a month ago, a disappointing season.

Had they fallen to Milwaukee for a third time this campaign, Butler would’ve possibly been on the March Madness 2011 bubble; now an 8 or 9 seed is more than likely for what I believe is the most intelligent (and perhaps best prepared) team in college basketball.

No Punchline Necessary: Tiki Barber to Unretire

Email Post Email Post

This is easily the most unintentionally funny sports story of the day.

According to multiple sources Tiki Barber, one of the most self-absorbed douchebags in recent NFL history, is planning to unretire and play in 2011. This, of course, assumes that a) there is a 2011 NFL season and that b) a team actually wants to sign a running back who will be 36 years old and who was so valuable to his last team that they won the Super Bowl the year after he retired.

As the title of this post says, there really is no punchline necessary.
