The Captain Morgan BracketMaster Challenge Presented By Spike.com Reaches the Elite Eight

This past weekend, Jerod was invited by the folks behind The Captain Morgan BracketMaster Challenge Presented by Spike.com to help promote the event and, oh yeah, take in a Lakers/Mavericks game. Despite the fact that MSF’s official Morganette, Erica, didn’t advance, that sure isn’t a bad consolation prize.

The BracketMaster Challenge, as of yesterday, has announced the Morganettes who will be participating in the Elite Eight round. Voting is live and will open through Saturday, March 26, so be sure to continue voting while you’re supposed to be working and are taking a break from refreshing March Madness updates.

Photo Story: “Two Angry Men” – Starring Frank Martin and William ‘Bo’ Francis Ryan

When Kansas State dispatched of Utah State last night, it set up a very intriguing Round of 32 matchup between the 5th seeded Wildcats and the 4th seed in the Southeast Region, the Wisconsin Badgers. The matchup is intriguing for a number of reasons, with one of the primary reasons being the two men patrolling the sidelines for each squad.

Bo Ryan (real name William Francis Ryan) and Frank Martin are both very, very good basketball coaches. They are not on the elite level of a Mike Krzyzewski or a Tom Izzo, but they are on that next level of coaches whose teams are virtual locks for 20 wins and an NCAA Tournament. What separates Martin and Ryan though, and makes them among the most entertaining coaches to watch, is their ridiculously expressive faces – especially when the expression is one of anger.

Earlier this morning I caught up with Martin and Ryan to discuss their impending matchup tomorrow. Despite their reputations, I did not expect things to so quickly devolve. I chronicled the interaction below in today’s photo story.

March Madness 2011: TV Schedule, Announcers, and Viewing Gameplan for Friday Second Roud Games

Email Post Email Post

This year, the NCAA has given us the opportunity to decide which games we want to watch for ourselves. As cool as this is, I know some of you are a little skeptical.

While it was frustrating at times in previous years that you couldn’t watch your team play (unless you loaded it up on your laptop and watched on the tiny screen), that guy that decided which game to air USUALLY did a pretty good job. Sure, it was occasionally upsetting, but for the most part, we did get to see the most exciting games, as well as several close finishes.
This was no more true than last year when it seemed like every single game from day one went down to the wire and there were like 50 buzzer-beaters.

But now its up to you. If you miss an exciting game, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Obviously, if you have a horse in the race (like I do with Purdue), parts of this will be unnecessary. In my house, there is only one thing that will be on from 7:20 to approximately 9:30. Also, if you have picked a huge upset like say, Indiana St. over Syracuse, that can qualify you for “having a horse in the race.” Hey, if you had the guts to pick a 14 over a 3, you should give yourself the opportunity to watch them make their magic.

But what do you do for the rest of the day? Here’s a strategy to help you out.

March Madness 2011: Live Chat for Thursday’s Games

Email Post Email Post

IT’S HERE!

I know, I know…we’re already officially four games in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, but admit it: those games felt extraneous to the real action. And the real action is going on right now. Clemson is down 6 with 2:50 to go; Butler and ODU are locked in a back-and-forth battle; and an upset is already brewing between Louisville and Morehead State.

As Gus might say…THIS is March Madness!

So why not blow off work and pop in and do some live chatting with me, MSF’s own Jon Washburn, the guys from Rumors and Rants, and a host of others? You know you want to…

March Madness 2011: Anthony Bourdain Breaks Down the 2nd/3rd Round Tournament Sites

Anthony Bourdain is awesome. As host of Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Bourdain spans the globe — you may know this already — eating, drinking, and uncovering the cultures and histories of anyone he comes in contact with, in a form all his own.

The NCAA Tournament, March Madness 2011, officially (if you’re like me and just kind of ignored that First Four stuff) starts today, with the second and third rounds being hosted by eight cities around the country. Anthony Bourdain may or may not have passed through all of these cities during his adventures, I don’t know for sure. Either way, here’s what he may have said about each host city, in a sentence or two, had someone asked.

Photo Story: “The Truce” – Starring Jalen Rose, Grant Hill and Mike Krzyzewski

Thanks to the documentary that aired Sunday night on ESPN, one of the hottest topics in the sports world this week has been the Fab 5 – some 20 years after they were the most talked about and watched team in college basketball.

It should go without saying that the reaction to said documentary has been decidedly mixed.

Many people, including our own Jon Washburn, had positive things to say about it. Others, like Jason Whitlock, thought it was more fantasy than documentary. Grant Hill, who was spoken of in unflattering terms in the doc, went so far as to write an editorial in the New York Times expressing his disappointment.

How do I feel about it? Frankly, I think the truth lies where it usually lies: in the middle. Some of the comments by Jalen Rose and Jimmy King that set off the firestorm of controversy were curt and unflattering, no question; but the reaction from Hill and teammate Bobby Hurley, among others, failed to take into the account the true context of the comments that offended them.

Luckily, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski decided to confront Jalen Rose about his comments, which ultimately led to a burying of the hatchet. Don’t believe me? The photographic evidence is pretty clear below.

Reconsidering the Fab 5, the Context of Jalen Rose’s Controversial Comments, and the Reality of Duke

Email Post Email Post
fab-5

Update: It’s a Fab 5 kind of morning here at MSF. Once you get done reading Jon’s take on the Fab5, check out Jerod’s latest photo story entitled The Truce. It features Jalen Rose, Coach K, Grant Hill, and others, and like this article challenges the common perceptions of the latest controversy surrounding the Fab 5.

I am a 24 year-old white male. I grew up smack-dab in the middle of Indiana but have lived in the Deep South for the past seven years.

It would be naive and foolish of me to even pretend that I’ve really “been around the block.” When it comes to culture, I know a little, but I don’t know a lot. When it comes to racism, I have seen my fair share (I live in Charleston, SC), but to be honest, I have never truly experienced it. When it comes to basketball, I know just about everything you could possibly know from 1995 to the present, but I must remain a student of the game to discover what happened before my time.

So when ESPN announced that they were going to broadcast a documentary on the Fab Five, I was pumped. Literally one of my first basketball memories ever was when my dad bought me a basketball from Hardee’s when I was only five years old. It was a “Final Four” basketball and had four logos: Duke, Indiana, Cincinnati, and Michigan. I can still remember looking at the big yellow “M” and my dad telling me that the Fab 5 played for them.

I had heard and read so much about them, but I had never actually SEEN them. SO I made it a point to clear my evening this past Sunday and set up my DVR so that whatever happened, I wouldn’t miss the chance to see the immortal Fab 5.

When it was over, three things stuck out to me:

16 Seeds Provide Early Madness

The First Four has caused controversy, but that was focused on the at large teams. The 16 seeds were barely talked about as they are seen as a game away from a beatdown by a #1 seed.

Let’s recap the two First Four games involving 16 seeds, the second of which just wrapped up a little while ago.

Unjustly Obscure Player of the Week: Todd Zeile

Email Post Email Post

Todd Zeile is a “Gnarls Gnarlington.” What does that mean? I couldn’t tell you. Just add it to the plethora of things to come out of Charlie Sheen’s mouth lately that are completely staggering.

Charlie Sheen has become pop culture in the last couple weeks. He really did all the work for me in coming up with the ideal player to return with when he mentioned his three favorite sports personalities were Zeile, Reggie Jackson and Mark Cuban. He also mentioned he would like to be Brian Wilson for a few minutes (who wouldn’t want to become one with THE BEARD?), and that the Reds need more starting pitching; so he obviously isn’t that out of it.

That said, let’s take a look at the man who has beguiled Mr. Sheen so much.

Fantasy Baseball Player Rankings – Outfield

Here are the detailed player rankings for outfield. Outfielders always strike me as the most volatile hitting position in the game. Heck, by the time I finish typing out all of these rankings, the rankings themselves should probably be redone. Hilarious Music Video: “She’s Too Good For Everyone”

Just made my daily pilgrimage to Hot Clicks and found the video below, which is easily the funniest two and a half minutes of anything I’ve seen all week.

It’s a music video for a song called “She’s Too Good For Everyone.” Is the singing good? Absolutely not. But it’s the hilarious dude from the Man In The Box Show, so I did not expect good singing. I did, however, expect it to be funny. And it is. Very funny.

Enjoy.
