After Brandon Davies Honor Code violation, BYU Cougars suddenly face extinction

Email Post Email Post

Would it have been too much to ask Brandon Davies to keep it ‘clean’ for just five more weeks?

Although, if reports that the suspended BYU center had impregnated his girlfriend are indeed true, I guess that would had been a pretty tough secret to keep for another month around the 8-0-1.

Actually, maybe BYU isn’t even going far enough banishing Davies from the team. Perhaps the school should vacate all of its basketball wins for the entire season, or from whatever date it could be determined that Davies first broke the Honor Code.

I can’t help but recall what former BYU hoops coach Roger Reid once said to a one-time prep All-American named Chris Burgess, who also happened to be a Mormon, when he had the gall to choose another school that wears blue and white – the one coached by Mike Krzyzewski called the Duke Blue Devils. At the time the coach supposedly told Burgess that he had ‘let down nine million people’ – the global membership of the LDS church.

You can argue that Davies has wound up doing the same, or at least whatever percentage of Mormons actually follow BYU hoops.

matt-painter-coach-of-the-year-candidate

I tweeted 140 characters worth of musings on said topic last night, but figure I can elaborate a bit more here, as this college basketball season seems to present more deserving men for Coach of the Year than in years past.

As we motor forward during March Madness 2011, here are the leading candidates for the top coach in college basketball for 2011.

Final Four History: Participants, Title Game Score, and Location For Every Final 4

Email Post Email Post

As we get prepared for the March Madness 2011 onslaught that will commence beginning next week, I am reorganizing some of our NCAA Tournament history posts. I just posted a simple table that shows the schools with the most NCAA College Basketball Tournament Championships – but to hang a banner, you first have to make the Final 4.

In this post, we review every Final 4 since the NCAA Tournament started in 1939, showing you the champion, the runner-up, the score of the NCAA title game, the other two Final 4 participants, each team’s tourney seed, and the Final 4 location.

Schools With Most NCAA Mens College Basketball Tournament Championships

Email Post Email Post

Earlier this week I wrote a post about the Purdue basketball program being the must underrated college basketball program in the country. The crux of the argument was that because Purdue does not have a national championship since the NCAA Tournament began in 1939, whereas, for example, Indiana has five, the Boilermakers’ regular season accomplishments are not respected as they should be.

As usual, some people agreed and some people disagreed. What cannot disputed as we get ready to embark on March Madness 2011 and another NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament, is the importance of being the last team standing in March. As any Indiana fan can tell you, once you hang a banner for a national championship, no one can ever take it away from you – and it gives you a pretty strong trump card in any argument over teams with fewer or zero national titles.

So which school has the ultimate trump card? Well, UCLA does of course, with their 11 national titles. The table below shows you all the teams who have won the NCAA Mens College Basketball Tournament, and which schools have won it the most.

Some baseball players are overrated and some are underrated…and MSF’s own Ari Kaufman named names in the USA Today Baseball Preview Magazine

Email Post Email Post
ari-article-1

On Super Bowl Sunday, we had the highest single-day traffic total that we have ever had here at Midwest Sports Fans. Needless to say, I was excited.

However, my pride in the mammoth visitor numbers we put up during the Big Game cannot compete with the pride I feel in seeing a member of the MSF team featured in one of the preeminent baseball preview magazines hitting newsstands everywhere as we zoom closer to pitchers and catchers reporting.

So, on behalf of the entire MSF team, I’d like to congratulate MSF’s own co-editor Ari Kaufman for earning the well-deserved honor of having his writing featured in the USA Today Baseball Preview Magazine. The article is entitled “Some players are overrated and others are underrated. We name names.” As usual, Ari provides strong opinions…and backs them up with numbers.

And for those of you familiar with Ari’s writing, it will not surprise you which side of the argument Ryan Howard is on.

2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament Guide

Email Post Email Post

My favorite sporting event of the year is the NCAA Tournament. It always has been since my day as a little kid in Bloomington, and I suspect it always will be. Therefore, it should not surprise you that every year around this time Midwest Sports Fans is overrun with March Madness content.

Starting in about mid-February, we pretty much do it all: from site breakdowns to bracket breakdowns to conference tournament breakdowns to tournament history, we try to provide as much information as we can get you ready for the tournament and to help you follow along once the brackets are announced.

One challenge is organizing all of this March Madness content. You can always click on the March Madness category page, or you can bookmark this page. Every post that goes out about March Madness will be linked here, and you’ll be able to find a convenient link to this page in the navigation bar. So no matter what you’re looking for this March, come here first; there is a good chance we’ll have it.

I’m a man, I’m 29…and I’m now scarified of an 8-year old

True story: while typing out of the title of this post, I guess I got caught between typing “scared” and “terrified” and ended up typing “scarified”. I thought about editing it, but then realized that the subject of this post is so extreme that the creation of a new word did it justice.

And what is the subject you may be thinking? It’s a 3rd grader named Stevo Poulin who I’m quite certain could whip my ass on a wrestling mat. In fact, he could probably whip your ass on a wrestling mat too.

If you don’t believe me, watch:

Locker won’t play baseball

Email Post Email Post

Update: Washington QB Jake Locker shot down speculation on Tuesday’s ProFootballTalk Live that he would turn to baseball’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the event of a lockout.  Jake Locker had a nice combine, and certainly doesn’t want to do anything to mess up the hype that now surrounds him.

Saints ink Rogers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms with DL Shaun Rogers on a one-year, $4 million contract.  Reports are Rogers could signed for more money elsewhere, but wanted to play closer to home.  Rogers should be the difference maker that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams needed.

Hasselback not close with Seattle

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's John Clayton reported on 710 ESPN Seattle that free agent Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawks are "miles apart" on a new contract. There won't an agreement by Thursday's CBA deadline. Hasselbeck won't get near the $6 million he got last year, but he should find teams interested in his services.

Palmer says he has $80M

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Dennis Janson of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, Carson Palmer recently told a friend that he will “never set foot in Paul Brown Stadium again.” “I have $80 million in the bank,” Palmer added. “I don’t have to play football for money. I’ll play it for the love of the game but that would have to be elsewhere. I’m prepared to live my life.” Palmer appears to be serious about not playing for the Bengals next season. Stay tuned for more on this situation.

NHL Trade Deadline: Central Division Winners and Losers

Email Post Email Post

The trade deadline was, for the most part, uneventful. There were still some dealings, but the excitement of the trade deadline was lessened by the lack of sellers on the market this season.

Every team in the NHL Central, except for Detroit, had a deal set in stone before the Monday deadline.

There was not any huge player dealt, but Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, and Columbus all got skaters that they hope will benefit them this season and possibly for seasons to come.

Here are the NHL trade deadline winners and losers for the NHL Central.
