2011 Women’s NCAA Tournament Preview: Dates, Locations, and Tickets

Update: The brackets have been announced! Follow the link to see our Women’s NCAA Tournament Bracket Breakdown.

Earlier this season, women’s basketball took center stage when the UCONN Lady Huskies broke UCLA’s NCAA record for consecutive wins. It was one of the rare times I can ever remember women’s basketball leading SportsCenter for something other than the Final 4 – and even then women’s basketball doesn’t often lead SportsCenter.

That record-breaking performance by UCONN and its surreal star Maya Moore, followed by their subsequent loss to Stanford, set the stage for what should be a very entertaining women’s NCAA Tournament in 2011. UCONN is back on top at #1 right now, but Stanford, Baylor, and Tennessee are nipping at the Huskies’ heels as tournament time approaches.

In this post, as we did for the men’s NCAA Tournament, we lay out all of the key dates for this year’s women’s tourney, the cities and venues where games will be played, and provide links and discount codes for tickets.

A Blackhawk forever, Wes Leonard goes out on top

Email Post Email Post

This weekend marks the anniversary of what remains one of the saddest and most tragic scenes I’ve ever encountered following sports.

Loyola Marymount basketball star Hank Gathers had just converted on a long alley-oop dunk from teammate (and future MLB outfielder) Terrell Lowery during a conference tournament game, and then he collapsed and died in front of horrified and grief-stricken spectators and students.

Fast-forward nearly 21 years to the day. With an undefeated regular season on the line for the Fennville (MI) Blackhawks, junior point guard Wes Leonard drives the lane and scores the winning basket against rival Bridgman High in overtime. The home fans go absolutely wild, and Leonard is hoisted by his teammates as plans were made for an impromptu team picture to commemorate the final 20-0 record. That snapshot, that moment in time, is what high school athletics is about.

Literally seconds later, that joy somehow transitioned into the ultimate horror. Wes Leonard collapses and goes into cardiac arrest, and shortly after pronounced dead at age 16.

Outside of the original military incident that inspired the 2001 movie, the phrase Blackhawk Down never had a sadder meaning.

A Great Friday Night for Cleveland Basketball Fans

Email Post Email Post

There has not been much to look forward to for any Cleveland sports fans this year. The Browns could only defeat great teams, but not average ones, and the Cavs laid an egg for 26 straight games.

Last night was different. though.

Three things happened it the basketball world that would make any Cleveland fan smile. The best news? All three were on TV.

Who is the best of the best in the NBA? Ranking the top 9 NBA superstars right now

Email Post Email Post
carmelo-lebron-wade

After Carmelo’s Knicks beat LeBron’s Heat on Sunday, I was prepared to hear some overreaction. But when I turned on Mike and Mike the next morning, it’s fair to say that I was more than a little stunned. The conversation focused around one question: “Who would you rather have, Carmelo or LeBron?”

Of course I was appalled.

How could you possibly say the two are comparable? Sure, Carmelo is a great scorer, especially in crunch time, and he was great on Sunday night against the Heat…but better than LeBron? Come on.

Further than that, not only was the question raised, but there actually seemed to be some consensus that people would, in fact, actually take Carmelo over LeBron. In my mind, the madness had to be stopped. I dislike LeBron as much as the next guy, but declaring anything other than the best player in the league is a little ludicrous…right?

End of an Era: Why Tarvaris Jackson Didn’t Work in Minnesota

Email Post Email Post
tarvaris-jackson

On Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings declined to make an offer to unrestricted free agent QB Tarvaris Jackson, and they have no plans to re-sign him to a new contract. This all but ensures that his time in a purple jersey is over.

I don’t know one Viking fan that is upset about this news, and I can’t think of a single Packer or Bear fan that isn’t upset by it. For years I heard taunts from people about how Jackson is the other team’s best player and that he is the worst quarterback in the league.

But no more. Jackson is gone! Rejoice!

Why are the Chicago Blackhawks playing so well of late?

Email Post Email Post

The last two weeks for the Blackhawks have been the best played, most productive, and most fun to watch weeks of the entire 2010-11 season. They haven’t been the most perfect weeks, but fans aren’t asking for perfection; they want their team to find ways to win.

And that’s exactly what the Blackhawks are doing.

As of Thursday, the ‘Hawks have a six game winning streak and are now tied with Phoenix for fourth place in the Western Conference. But why, so late into the season, are the defending Stanley Cup champions playing so well?

Is it really that hard to beat a team three times in one season?

Email Post Email Post
danny-manning-kansas

“It’s hard to beat a team three times.”

This folk wisdom has been passed down among sports fans (and particularly college basketball and pro football fans) for decades. The idea is as follows: if Team A defeats Team B twice, and Teams A and B meet for a third time, Team A will have a harder time winning the third game than it did winning either of the first two.

But what do the numbers and the empirical evidence say? Will they?
