March Madness 2011: Sunday TV Schedule, Announcer Assignments, and Viewing Gameplan

After a rather lackluster slate of games on Friday, Saturday’s Round of 32 action more than made up for it.

San Diego State outlasted Temple in a horribly ugly double OT contest. Kentucky and Florida played great in the second halves of their games to get Ws. And, of course, Butler pulled off yet another thrilling win as an underdawg.

Let’s hope Sunday has more madness in store. Here is the TV schedule, announcer assignments, and a few quick comments by me about which games you should plan your day around.

March Madness 2011 TV Schedule and Announcers for Sunday Round of 32 Games

  • 12:15 ET: #7 Washington v #2 North Carolina on CBS w/ Nantz & Kellogg
  • 2:45 ET: #8 Michigan v #1 Duke on CBS w/ Nantz & Kellogg
  • 5:15 ET: #8 George Mason v #1 Ohio State on CBS w/ Gus & Len
  • 6:10 ET: #5 Arizona v #4 Texas on TNT w/ Marv Albert & Steve Kerr
  • 7:10 ET: #11 VCU v #3 Purdue on TBS w/ Spero Dedes & Bob Wenzel
  • 7:45 ET: #11 Marquette v #3 Syracuse on truTV w/ Gus & Len
  • 8:40 ET: #9 Illinois v #1 Kansas on TNT w/ Marv Albert & Steve Kerr
  • 9:40 ET: #10 Florida State v #2 Notre Dame on TBS w/ Spero Dedes & Bob Wenzel

If you are like me, whenever looking at a TV lineup for the NCAA Tournament you immediately locate the games Gus Johnson will be calling. Marquette-Syracuse is a Big East battle, though I can’t say I am particularly intrigued by it. I am, however, very intrigued by Ohio State-George Mason. I think That Matta’s Buckeyes will win it relatively comfortably, but, that would defy the Law of Gus, so be on upset alert for that fact alone.

The most intriguing game of the day to me is Washington versus North Carolina. This be a fast-paced game with lots of star power – Isaiah Thomas and Harrison Barnes especially. Washington is a team that has made deep tourney runs recently, and North Carolina has been an up and down squad this year. I like the Tar Heels to win, they have better players, but the Huskies will not allow them to do so easily. Make sure you get the TV on early for this one.

For the nighttime action, keep your eye on Illinois-Kansas. As any Big Ten fan knows, few teams are as Jekyll-Hyde as the Illini. They have the talent to beat anyone in America (ask UNLV) but the immaturity and lack of focus to lose to anyone as well. In a one-and-done situation, perhaps the Illini will have the focus they need to unleash their potential. If they do, Kansas will have a dogfight on its hands. I think Illinois keeps it close for a while before Kansas pulls away, but this game certainly bears watching.

What are you most looking forward to on Sunday?

I love Gus, but even the Voice of G-d himself (or Vin Scully etc) would make me watch the Cuse-Marquette game. Garbage.

BTW, another lackluster tourney for the big east. How many of their ridiculous 11 teams even made the sweet 16? 3? Will ESPN/CBS/Committee ignore this again and forget back March 2012? Of course.
