Britt to be in court Thursday

Email Post Email Post

Update: Titans wideout Kenny Britt is due to appear in court Thursday to respond to a "theft-by-deception" claim arising from last year's promise to pay bail money for a friend.  Britt needs to keep himself out of trouble off the field if he wants to be looked upon as a star player in the NFL.  He certainly has the abilities, but so far he has yet to manage to stay out of trouble.

Porter done in Arizona

Update: The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers considers linebacker Joey Porter "doubtful" to be back with the Cardinals in 2011. Porter is scheduled to make way too much money next year, and is going to be 34 years old next month.  The Cards are expected to cut him loose.

Palmer to put house up for sale

Email Post Email Post

Update: Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is reportedly planning to place his Cincinnati-area house up for sale. Palmer told the Bengals he wants to be dealt or he will retire. His real estate agent, for one, believes "he's not coming back." Owner Mike Brown has said the team will not deal Palmer but then again he may just be saying that to maintain Palmer's trade value, if there is any at all.

Through the Eyes of a Die-Hard: The Green Bay Packers, World Champions

The picture below shows the statue of Curly Lambeau on Sunday night.  When we decided to sprint from Kroll’s West, our headquarters since 11 a.m. on Sunday of Super Bowl everything, and the final resting place of some of the most stressful, jubilant, insane, hilarious, terrifying, and in the end fucking amazing moments of my life – also, a half-paid kamikaze shot bar tab. Sorry, Kroll’s – our intended destination was the statue of Vince Lombardi.

We never quite made it, and it doesn’t really matter.

Inspiring Story of Tom Walter and Kevin Jordan Inspires the Greatest Reader Comment…Maybe Ever

The screenshot below is from this story at Chronicle.com that briefly touches on the most poignantly awesome sports story of the new year.

In short: Tom Walter, a head coach of the Wake Forest baseball team, donated a kidney to Kevin Jordan, a freshman outfielder. That kind of selflessness and sacrifice is exactly what coaches try to instill in their players and teams; Tom Walter actually led by incredible example. It’s a great story. (For more on it, click here.)

What caught my eye about the post at The Chronicle was the first comment on the story. Take a look:

Michael Young Has Texas Rangers Over a Barrel

Email Post Email Post

You may remember a player who pouted and demanded a trade every time his ballclub did something that he was not on board with, or when the team (gasp!) asked him to move to another position to improve the team.

In fact this player once wanted off a team so bad early in his career that he played half-assed, hit .190 and (allegedly) threw balls into the fifth row on purpose.

Yes Michael Young, you are the new Gary Sheffield.

Spartans’ Struggles Have Roots on the Recruiting Trail

Email Post Email Post

College basketball fans and analysts are in full rubberneck mode at the fiery car crash that has become the Michigan State season, and there are a myriad of theories on what caused a pre-season Top 5 team to completely implode.

Following last season’s unexpected Final Four run, the Spartans were expecting six of their top seven scorers to suit up this year.  They dodged a bullet when Tom Izzo spurned the Cavaliers (who have turned into an even bigger dumpster fire than MSU), and Sparty seemed prime for another deep NCAA run.

But as Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend.”

Orton due a raise

Email Post Email Post

Update: Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton is scheduled to receive nearly $9 million in 2011 salary and bonuses.  His base salary is scheduled to be just under $7.5 million.  Don't expect the Broncos to pay him this money if Tebow is going to take over as the starter.  Orton is sure to be a guy who is shopped once a new CBA is in place.

Pats wanted TE Olsen

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears reportedly believed they had a trade in place that would've sent Greg Olsen to the Patriots for a second-round pick just prior to last April's draft. The trade fell through and New England wound up drafting Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Fantasy Impact:  Thank God for the Pats! Olsen couldn't match the production in 2010 of either Gronk or Hernandez.  Expect the Bears to once again shop Olsen in the offseason.

Gruden not contacting Palmer

Email Post Email Post

Update: Bengals new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said Monday that he still hasn't met or spoken to Carson Palmer.  "Things were said before I got here, and I think they've got to take care of those things in-house first," Gruden said. "Then if they need me, I'll be glad to talk to him and do what I need to do to try to get him back. But I think that's got to come from upstairs, that's got to come from the head coach."

Fantasy Impact:  Palmer wants out of Cincy, and who can blame him as the team is clearly in a youth movement.  Expect Palmer to be back though because his contract makes him too difficult to deal.

Vick gets key to Dallas

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPNDallas.com is reporting that Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick was handed key to the city of Dallas, TX by mayor pro tem Dwaine Caraway.

Fantasy Impact: This seems to be a very weird story. Michael Vick is not from Dallas, and plays for the Eagles, a huge division rival of the Dallas Cowboys. This also caused some uproar among animal rights activists in the city. Caraway defended Vick by saying, "He is telling kids and exchanging with them the rights and wrongs of the things that he did and encouraging kids to further their education and to not deal with the drugs. To obey their parents and pick the people they hang around.”

“Gray and Scarlet” by Rikk Reighn – Ohio State Basketball Highlight Video

Rikk Reighn

I saw the video below re-tweeted by Ohio State basketball frosh phenom Jared Sullinger. There has been a run of recent MSF posts about Midwest Universities and their lame white students trying and failing to sing/dance/rap some street cred into their programs; this actually does the job well.

Rikk Reighn is not a young, dumb student at tOSU and he recorded a song that is very good and NOT annoying to the ears. That is, unless you are from Michigan or have #1-basketball-program-and-six-straight-Big-Ten-football-championship-envy.

The video includes: a good beat (sampled from Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”); well-rapped verses that drop 2010-2011 Ohio State basketball names without sounding forced; and a great 2010-2011 highlight reel.
