Fantasy Baseball: 2011 First Base Primer: Strategy, Stock Watch, and More

Email Post Email Post

Albert Pujols is the first overall pick. No doubt about it. Miguel Cabrera is the second pick in my book. [Editor's note: this was written before Cabrera's latest DUI.]

First base is a pretty deep position, but it is important to get a top-notch first baseman early who will anchor your lineup. First base produces power and all the other necessary numbers for fantasy, so do not wait too long to pick a first baseman.

The key to a successful life is…wait, what?

gordon-keith-quote

A few minutes ago I saw an intriguing tweet pop up from Gordon Keith (@GordonKeith – follow him), one of my favorite radio personalities here in Dallas, Texas. You may remember Keith from his, shall we say, awkward interview with Zach Galifianakis, but those of us who live in the DFW Metroplex know him as the co-host of the morning Musers show on 1310 The Ticket.

One of the many qualities that make “the great Gordo” compelling to listen to is his ability to make keen, concise observations about human psychology. I don’t know if he studied this formally in his past, but I find myself nodding in agreement with him often. Whether that makes him right, I don’t know. I just know I agree with him a lot.

And, in general, I agree with a point he made today, although I’m not sure I agree with his specific take on the topic that was being discussed.

Mark Buehrle

Editor’s Note: This article was written by Andrew Schwartz, a native of Washington D.C., and former college baseball player at the University of Rochester, who now resides in New Orleans. (Article edited by AJ Kaufman)

In 2005, Mark Buehrle helped me win my fantasy baseball league by going 16-8 with a 3.12 ERA in what was a career-defining season. That was the first time I actually took notice of him—on the basis of his statistical performance.

Update: Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune is "not so sure" that the Raiders will be franchise tagging free agent TE Zach Miller.  The Raiders just spent a boat load of money re-signing Richard Seymour, and now appear to be thinking about paying Miller big time dollars.

Driver not going to retire

Update: Green Bay Packers wideout Donald Driver confirmed Thursday that he has no intention of retiring any time soon. "I don't know why people have said I was going to retire," Driver said. "My goal has always been that I was going to play until I'm 40 … I feel good. I feel like I haven't lost anything." Driver should lose out on touches next year to Jordy Nelson.

Non-Sports: Kelly from American Airlines provides an example of why I’m proud to be a Midwesterner

As you know – the name of this website should give it away – I’m a proud native of the Midwest (Indiana, to be exact). I no longer live there, as family and work moved me to Dallas in 2008, but I will always consider the Midwest to be my home.

Today I stumbled upon a simple story of kindness and customer service that reminded me why I’m such a proud Midwesterner in the first place. It’s not particularly extraordinary, and it’s not going to make your jaw drop; it’s just a simple example of a person doing another person a solid – the Midwest way.

2011 Catcher Primer: Strategy, Stock Watch, and more

Email Post Email Post

Although there are some young up-and-coming names to keep an eye on, catcher remains a very thin position when it comes to proven impact bats. That is why the best catchers should be highly valued, due to the big drop off after the top catchers, and why you don’t want to overpay if you miss out on an elite guy.

Catcher is a tough position to draft because it is more of a defensive position. Do not rely on a catcher to carry your team, but be aware that it is a position that needs to still be filled with an adequate player. Do not expect 30 home runs out of guys outside the McCann-Martinez-Mauer-Posey group.

Whose stock is up and whose stock is down heading into 2011?

The Cavs may be the most inconsistent team in the NBA this season, but they continue to intrigue Clevelanders. And tonight, unlike many previous nights, the intrigue had nothing to do with losing.

Tonight the Cavs defeated the struggling – but still defending champion – Lakers in a 104-99 victory.

Photo Story: La Decisión – ARod Counsels Albert Pujols

As Spring Training camps start in warm weather locales across the country, there is no bigger story than the inability of the St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols to agree on a new contract.

Pujols said that his deadline for negotiating a new contract was when he reported to Spring Training. It has also been reported that Pujols is seeking the largest contract in baseball history, something absurd like 10 years, $300 million. Well, the deadline came, the deadline went, and now one of the best hitters in the history of baseball is slated to be a free agent at season’s end.

Alex Rodriguez is the man whose contract record Pujols hopes to break. Earlier this week, away from the cameras and scribbling pencils of the media, the Dominican legends discussed Pujols’ decision to hold out for more money from the Cardinals or become a free agent if they do not up their offer. The media might not have been there, but MSF was.

I think you’ll find the conversation between the two men to be very revealing. Cardinals fans might even find it to be a source of optimism during what I’m sure has been a tough couple of days. With that said, enjoy our latest photo story: La Decisión.
