If you were a college athlete, could you maintain your NCAA eligibility? [Quiz]

I grew up around college athletics and know first hand the tight rope that players have to walk to stay eligible and just how closely coaches have to monitor them. So when I see a player is declared ineligible, I am never surprised. I’m only surprised that it doesn’t happen more.

My dad was a position coach for many years at IU, as I’ve mentioned on MSF before, and my mom constantly had her maternal instinct shot down because even things as seemingly innocent and harmless as giving a kid a ride to the airport, or helping him afford a plane ticket home for the holidays, or buying him a player of gloves for Christmas, was off-limits thanks to the NCAA and its notorious rulebook.

The fine folks over at ReeseNews.org, which is run by journalism students at the University of North Carolina, put together a fun little quiz game that gives you the chance to make a series of decisions and see if you make enough correct calls to stay eligible. I passed on my first try, in large part because I know from experience: when in doubt, don’t.

Take the quiz and see how you do. Record your score in the comments and let’s if MSF can field a full roster next season, or if some of you will have to sit out because you accepted an improper benefit.

Note: A few people have told me that the quiz isn’t loading properly from ReeseNews.org all the time. Try viewing it directly on their site if you’re having an issue with loading. But them come back and record how you did!

Excellent! What position do you play? Gotta keep the depth chart straight here.

Excellent. Well done. Can we count on you during the offseason not to get into any unnecessary trouble? We'll need you next year.

Four violations and one missed opportunity. You'd think that the coaches and advisors would help me out a bit!!

Sounds like we need to go ream someone in the compliance department too. Damn.

2 Violations: Congratulations! You walked the straight and narrow, NCAA-style. Combine that compliance with your talents, and you’re a first-round draft pick in the NFL. Nicely done.

Sweet! Glad we can count on you Dave. Looks like we still need more eligible players though if we're going to target the BCS next year…

#4 is inaccurate. A coach can provide local transportation on an occasional basis.

Isn't that the answer they had for it? I remember that question because it was the one I missed. I said I wouldn't take the ride. (Unless I'm pulling a Clemens and misremembering.)

    Yes! Nice job.

2 violations and 2 missed opportunities

Missed 4 opportunities and despite caution still ended up with 2 violations. And that's with considerable life experience. Pity the college kids dealing with this.

  • Jared

Three missed opportunities, no violations. I do work in an athletic dept. though and am married to a collegiate coach so I do have some knowledge in the area.

  • Brenda

I only missed three. Pretty decent I think.
